What is my Series 3 HD worth?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 19:23
I decided to upgrade to the Roamio and get rid of my S3 HD THX. Can anyone tell me what it is worth? I replaced the hard drive, I think to 500gb. Recording time says 70 hours, does that sound right? Thanks.

Thinking about switching back to Tivo - questions

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 19:23
With the new Roamios out now, I'm thinking about switching back to Tivo.

I had one of the original Sony Series 1 boxes with a lifetime subscription. The box is long dead, but I still have the serial number / service number. Could I transfer that to the new Roamio? How much would it cost?

Does Tivo Desktop allow you to start watching a show before it completes downloading to the PC? I'd prefer to just be able to stream it instead of downloading, but that would work ok too.

Can you play MKV files (like blu-ray rips, etc.) from a remote network share on the Tivo? How about from the Mini? I can do this now on my HTPC, but it would be nice to have one device to do it all.

Advice on plan for new premiere

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 19:16
I just bought a Premiere and with the Roamio coming out now am undecided on the plan to get.

1st - I see nothing worthwhile right now on the Roamio for me. I already own a stream, so will get all that functionality, and have a the mini. The 6 tuners would be nice, but Im not a super DVR'er - I rarely had a conflict with 2 tuners. 4 will be plenty, esp when the dynamic tuning is fixed. I also am disappointed that the options are 1 TB or 3 TB. 2 TB is perfect for me.

So assuming I will keep the premier for 1 year, an then consider upgrading,is the lifetime plan even worthwhile? Would I get any of it back if I resold it on eBay.

Or should I just say screw it, return the premiere and order the Roamio?

1080P and my Series 3

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 19:09
Quick questions regarding 1080P...

1) Does my Tivo Series 3 produce 1080p?

2) Does charter even broadcast in 1080p?

3) Would I get a better picture with the new Tivo Roamio?

Thank you!

Roamio owner initial feedback

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 19:02
Some of us could be receiving our Roamio as soon as tomorrow. Feedback on unboxing, setup and initial reaction might be interesting. We have read the reviews, now for some feedback from those who really count!!

Tivo will not honor grandfather Tivo transfer to Roamio

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 19:01
I have a grandfathered tivo (KDB 09-07-04) that has been confirmed by tech support to be eligible.

Tonight I called Tivo to purchase a Roamio. They refused to sell me one. They said I will have to wait a few weeks until they have a "standalone" available without any subscription on it. They also said this "standalone" will cost more than the $200 but not sure how much.

The bottom line is Tivo is going to charge me more for the hardware to transfer lifetime that was grandfathered by in 1999. Not a very good way to treat an old customer.

on order :)

4 to 6 days is going to kill me I'm not good at waiting. :D

No Class Action!

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 17:55
Guess TiVo got tired of all the class action forum threads/threats... ;)

Any retention Premier deals now the new boxes are out?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 17:18
I have 2 Premier boxes gathering dusts in the closet. Is there any good deals to re-activate them either monthly or lifetime service?

Upgrade?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 17:15
I'm still a bit confused as to why I should upgrade from my Premiere. Is the Roamio worth upgrading to?

UV collectors sign in here! VUDU / FLIXSTER

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 17:12
I love UltraViolet movies http://www.uvvu.com

I have almost 200 UV movies and watch via Vudu on my Roku for my Projector and with Vudu on my Samsung Evolution Kit. I used to use Flixster on my Google TV which also works very good. I would love to stop using both and instead use Tivo to watch UV movies and get the Tivo Mini. If Tivo had UV support I would sell my Roku / and evolution kit to buy the Mini. I also have two Chromecasts, but they don't support UV movies yet either.

So you have a UV collection and want it on your new TIVO, please respond to this thread and let us know how many movies you have!

Also for people that don't know much about UV, if you want some movies cheap UV is perfect for you. On ebay UV movies - (HDX - blu-ray quality) cost between $4 and $6. which is 3x 4x cheaper than buying digital movies direct from amazon/itunes/or vudu itself. There are even a few online stores you can buy codes from. Another way to get UV movies with new movies, just buy them add the code to your account, then resale the discs. Most of them time you can get 95% of price back for just released movies.

GO TIVO AND GO UV!!! GO TIVO AND GO UV!!! GO TIVO AND GO UV!!!

Plus or Pro?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 17:03
I think the only difference is the storage 150 hours vs. 450 hours. Is it worth $200?

Has Netflix been fixed yet?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 17:00
Hey all, with Roamio is Netflix working? With Premieres there's an issue that the controls (FF, Rewind, pause) sometimes stop working. When this happens, after the show is over it just shows a blank screen instead of the menu.

The only thing that works is hitting the TiVo button and restarting Netflix. If that doesn't work the TiVo has to be restarted. It's been happening for months.

What does losing THX sound really mean?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 16:46
This device outputs what kind of sound? 5.1 or 7.1?

What does not having THX (upgrading from the Tivo S3) really mean?

Will I notice the sound not being as good as my old Tivo?

Just I have no idea what THX gives you (other than a cool boot up sequence)

Internal and external Streams

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 16:04
Is there a benefit to having an external Stream unit with a Roamio Pro on a network with Premieres? I will have three, possibly four minis.

Not sure I see any benefit to keeping the standalone box in my case.

IR remotes still work?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 15:57
I see that the new Roamio has a RF remote, does this mean I can not use my existing IR Harmony?

IR Support or IR jack on the back of the Roamio

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 15:49
I was wondering if the new S5 is going to support IR commands. I do a lot of custom jobs where we need to setup IR eyes since most of the equipment is racked and hidden away. I know the S5 has a RF remote. I hope that they kept a way to have custom remotes work with it either through IR or custom drivers.

Thanks,
Eric

Still need a tuning adapter?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 15:32
I haven't found anything in the specs... will this box still need a tuning adapter or did they finally build in SDV support?

If the former, they lost me.

Can a Roamio Rebuild a Data Drive from Scratch?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 15:17
The Roamio tivos are the first retail offering to have a built in Flash that houses the "executable" portions of the tivo software (as opposed to the data, e.g. videos, program guide data, etc.)

Presumably, this should allow them to tolerate replacement of the internal hard disk (termed a "data disk") with a blank/new hard disk and be able to boot and rebuild the internal disk.

One would still lose recordings, but at least it would obviate the need for backup images.

I'm wondering if anyone has tested this yet (to confirm that it will rebuild the data disk if provided a new drive) and can say whether or not the tivo will attempt to fully utilize the new drive (potentially to 3GB or beyond).
