Premier constantly rebooting - surge not getting enough power?

Sat, 12/29/2012 - 13:08
I bought the Tivo Premiere back in September, and it is plugged in through an APC surge protector (not UPS). I also had our old non-HD TV, cable coax, and the Tivo Wireless-N stuff plugged into it. I recently plugged in our DVD player and set it up so we could watch DVD's as well. However, in order for us to watch Tivo in this new setup, I have to keep the DVD player on (since the Tivo AV cables are plugged directly into the back of the DVD player).

Last night, we were trying to watch a Tivo recording when the show stopped running... then the Tivo rebooted itself two or three times before it stabilized long enough to allow us to finish watching the show. This morning, I woke up to the Tivo stuck at the "powering up" screen. After speaking to Tivo support, it seems the Tivo was not getting enough power through the surge protector... and it appears to be working by plugging it directly through the wall outlet. (It has been running for over 30 minutes so far without it crashing... which is much better than what it was doing earlier.)

Does that make sense at all? I feel the Tivo is "unprotected" by keeping it off the surge protector, but I am not sure what else to do unless I move something else off the surge instead.

pyTivo on a Raspberry Pi?

Sat, 12/29/2012 - 11:25
Has anyone tried running pyTivo on a Raspberry Pi yet? The standard Debian Wheezy image for the Pi includes a couple of versions of Python so I was wondering if pyTivo would run.

OTA signal. Help!

Sat, 12/29/2012 - 10:56
I live in new York city, and my OTA setup gets us plenty of viewing options on my TiVo Premiere. But the signal on some channels sucks. I went through a few antennas before I got the RCA indoor that I'm using. (an apartment dweller doesn't have any outdoor options. But some days, the local CBS affiliate looks like when you have a satellite dish in a snowstorm, and it's unwatchable. Some days it's perfect but the NBC affiliate does that. The others are never a problem.

I'm willing to take any advice!

Thanks

Unable to transfer recordings

Fri, 12/28/2012 - 23:30
I have a Series 2 that I am replacing with a Premiere and I want to transfer saved recordings to the Premiere. The Series2 connects to my network via the Tivo usb wireless adapter. The Premiere is connected to my network via an ethernet cable. All the network settings and Media Access Key are correct.

When I try to connect to transfer I get the error "My Shows could not be displayed because of a network problem". Other than the fact that there is no My Shows on the Series 2 (which is the same as the Series2 'Now Playing List') it should not matter IMO.

What is preventing the systems from talking to each other?

Thanks, Jon

Going from 2 external MOCAs to 1 internal and one external

Fri, 12/28/2012 - 22:12
Hi all,

I have a question regarding the difference between hooking up 2 units with external MOCA adapters versus two units where one has an internal adapter and one has an external adapter. My main concern: is there going to be any difference in the way I hook them up to the network?

More specifically:

Right now I have 2 Tivos - one is an HD and one is an XL. They are both connected to the network via Netgear MOCA adapters. I am going to be replacing the HD with an XL4. The XL4 comes with an internal MOCA adapter. My question is - will this new setup be the same as the old one, or are there any significant differences I should be aware of?

thanks in advance,

Rob from AZ

Channel is temporarily unavailable.

Fri, 12/28/2012 - 19:10
The problem as I see it:

This channel is temporarily unavailable.
Press select to try tuning to this channel again.
Contact your cable provider for more information.

My equipment:

TiVo HD, with one multi-stream cable card. 3 years old
Cisco STA1520 Tuning adapter. 1 year old

My service:

Cox San Diego South
Cox Advanced TV
Pretty much all channels they offer but NO premiums (HBO, Showtime etc...)

I get the above message when I'm surfing channels 100 and above.
And I do surf a lot!
It's not always the same channel.
I can be watching it one minute, continue surfing, tune back and it's gone.
Also, I'll be watching a particular channel for an extended period of time and it will just freeze.
Sometimes I can tune away from it, tune back and the problem is solved. But not very often.
Recorded programs never affected. Mostly network stuff. Never in HD.

I apologize if this issue has been addressed in the past.
Just couldn't find it directly relating to my issue.

What's going on?

TiVo? Tuning adapter? Cable Card? Cox? Operator error?

Do some Comcast markets only support 2 tuners with an M-Card?

Fri, 12/28/2012 - 19:02
Hey all, I got a Premiere 4 to replace my Premiere so I can record 4 shows at once instead of 2. I have an M-card which should support it based on all the research I've done including tickets with both Comcast and TiVo.

I won't bore you with the details of the long drawn-out dialogs with both, but in a nutshell, Comcast claims they re-paired to support 4 tuners, and TiVo said they didn't based on a support doc they sent.

I believe the latter. A Comcast rep came out today and said in my area, M-Tuners only support 2 tuners. TiVo support said they have never heard of such a thing - that "quad tuning being supported by Comcast in one area and not the other. That's just simply not true."

I'm in northern Indiana. Have any of you had issues in your area with Comcast only supporting 2 tuners with an M-Card?

How would a MoCA setup work for me?

Fri, 12/28/2012 - 17:09
Hi,

I am considering MoCA to extend my ethernet range, but I'm not sure how the setup would work for me based on the diagrams I've seen. I get how the additional MoCA adapters would be setup, but I'm not clear on the "main" adapter setup.

At my main console, I have the cable modem, the router, and the TiVo XL. From the wall, the coax goes into a splitter, with one side going into the TiVo and one to the cable modem.

The TiVo side goes from the splitter to the tuning adapter to the TiVo.

The modem side goes from the splitter to the modem (duh).

So I am a bit confused, as I have seen diagrams where the MoCA goes between the (in my case) splitter and the tivo, and others where it goes between the splitter and the cable modem. How would I wire up MoCA in my situation, keeping the tuning adapter in mind as well?

Thanks for any help.

Activating for a few months at a time

Fri, 12/28/2012 - 15:34
I picked up several new-old-stock Premieres from Woot!

And am currently using one in "Unknown!" mode up here at the cabin.

I only use this place for a few months a year (November to March) and would like to activate for just those months w/o getting stuck with a year's activation.

Is this possible?

(Already have: lifetime Premiere, lifetime TivoHD, lifetime Series 2, monthly TivoHD at home)

Same Channel - 1 show is fine, the other is pixelated

Fri, 12/28/2012 - 14:21
I have a brand new Premiere XL that was bought for one purpose - recording The Young & The Restless for my wife. This is the only program that will not record so that it is remotely viewable. we tried recording the show right after that one on the same channel and it plays back without any issues.

We do not have cable, so everything is being recorded off an antenna. Haven't had 1 issue with any other recordings, just this one show.

Well that's annoying - Netflix

Fri, 12/28/2012 - 12:07
So I just got a new TV that supports all the video formats including 1080p/24. I don't like the resolution switch that can happen during some shows so I only enabled 1080i and 1080p on the TiVo. Last night I was watching Netflix and it kept switching between the two causing a brief blank of the audio and video. It was really annoying. Eventually I just went back and turned 1080p off. My question is why would it do that? I have a 30mbps internet connection so I don't think it's a bandwidth problem.

TiVo Premier Clicking problem

Thu, 12/27/2012 - 23:13
I just installed a brand new TiVo Premier and it seems to work great except for one huge problem - it makes a loud annoying clicking sound whenever changing channels, rewinding, fast forwarding or bringing up the TiVo menu. I do not have cable and I use an antenna. Any ideas?

Note that the clicking is coming through the tv speakers. I can prevent the clicking by muting the tv, performing a command (such as switching channels) and then un-muting, but obviously this is a pain.

The TiVo is connected to my Sharp flat screen tv using HDMI. I have never heard my tv make this clicking sound before so I am sure that it's coming from the TiVo.

The clicking problem also occurs when using Hulu and Netflx on the TiVo or when watching recorded shows so I don't think the problem has anything to do with my use of an antenna.

Please help!

[MadisonWI] missing channel (signal lock=yes, program lock=no)

Thu, 12/27/2012 - 22:24
Approximately 2 weeks ago, my Tivo Premiere stopped being able to tune a set of local digital channels received over cable. DVR Diagnostics reports that it can get a signal lock, but no program lock. Channels not tuned are 607 (WKOWDT), 967 (WKOWDT2), 966 (WKOWDT3) in Madison Wisconsin over Charter Cable. These are the digital cable channels of the local ABC affiliate.

When trying to tune to any of these channels Tivo reports "Problem with the signal on this cable channel. Trying again." Have tried waiting, restarting Tivo, and restarting tuning adapter with no success.

All other channels are working fine, and I can receive these 3 channels directly on my TV, so the problem seems to be specific to the Tivo Premiere.

Can anyone else in Madison confirm a similar problem? Any ideas for a solution?
