I am planning to pass my TiVo HD on to my son and his wife. I am getting another Premiere. I want to first copy the content from the HD to my new Premiere. I have a complete series (just 7 or 8 episodes) that my son never saw.
According to instructions from TiVo I should wipe the HD before passing it on.
I know I have to cancel my service contract before passing the HD on, but...
Is there a way to clear my contract info and leave the programming for my son, or is this not allowed?
Tivo has petitioned the FCC to guarantee that cable customers can continue to use retail set-top boxes with CableCARDS.
That follows a court decision in which EchoStar won its challenge to FCC rules on the ability to record TV programming. The issue was not CableCARDS, but it raised questions about cable obligations to support consumer access to the cards, according to Tivo, which it wants the FCC to clear up since those CableCARDS also allow access to TiVo recording devices.
The actual 31 page filing can be read here --> http://apps.fcc.gov/ecfs/document/view?id=7520930889
At the Cable Show in Washington last month, FCC Media Bureau Chief Bill Lake said that one of the "sleeper" issues at the FCC, or more like one that had him tossing and turning in bed, was where to go with navigation devices after the courts essentially threw out the CableCard rules while preserving the integration ban. The question of what downloadable security should be included in navigation devices remains, he said.
This past Sunday our TiVo recorded an episode of "Next Foodnetwork Star". However, when we went to watch it, it had absolutely no sound whatsoever :( On the alternate channel, a different show recorded just fine.. sound and all.
I can't remember this happening before. Can anyone tell me what might have caused this?
I'm attempting to use the Hauppauge HD PVR 2 with the XL4 and am not getting a component output signal from the XL4. My understanding from other posts that it's possible to have simultaneous HDMI and component output from the XL4. Is there some setting on the TiVo that I need to change? The TiVo is set to output all formats from 480i to 1080p.
My XL4 is connected directly to a Sony TV via HDMI and it's working fine. Its HDMI output is not going through the PVR 2. I suspect that the component output is missing though.
It's not a problem with the HD PVR 2 or its capture software because that works great if I connect the PVR 2 to component output on a different device.
Anyone got a set up like this?
I am in Northern Virginia (Round Hill), I have 2 TiVo HD and 1 TiVo Premier on ComCast with all the needed networking and Cable Cards....
I can record HD content (excluding Pay / Premier content like HBO / ShowTime) and watch it on another TiVo. Though I think this is a basic value of multiple TiVo, what I do is
1) Record ABC in HD or FXHD or SciFi on the Premier
2) I go to either of the TiVo HD and watch the content that was recorded.
Comcast flags the HBO / ShowTime as copy protected and can not be moved (as above).
If I am thinking of switching to FiOs, how do I verify that I can move HD (non-Premium Content) around and not loose functions? Does anyone do this on FiOS, or know their policy?
Don't know if this was started with a recent update as we only started heavily streaming once the kids got out of school.
Netflix streams on our Tivo Elite are all starting with English subtitles defaulted ON. Every episode of movie has to be switched to OFF manually.
I've read somewhere that if you watch a stream for 5-10 mins, Netflix will "remember" and update your preferences. That hasnt worked for weeks. Every episode or movie has to be changed.
any suggestions on how to change this preference and make it permanent?
I am using the latest version of streambaby, and am using metagenerator3. I create the metadata, and it locks up the tivo when it try to play the VOB file with metadata. All my VOB files play fine if they dont have the data. Below is what the command window says when I try to play a video file with metadata. It hangs up on the last part. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Please bear with me as I go through a somewhat complex set of troubleshooting and the eventual results ...
My Hughes SD-DVR40 (with WD Caviar Blue 250gb replacement [IDE] hard drive) started having problems in the spring -- many recorded programs would play with almost unwatchable pixelation, pauses, etc. The unit would also periodically reboot (but always come back up). Then about two weeks ago it failed to boot (stuck at the "Powering Up" screen). I figured the hard drive (which replaced the original 40gb drive in 2011) was bad. I had a spare WD10EARS 1tb SATA drive that I I had not been using and decided to try that. Ordered a cheap SATA to IDE adapter ($6.95) from Amazon. Then I used dd_rescue to copy the 250gb drive to the 1tb SATA drive (under linux). Strange that I got no errors. I also ran the Western Digital DOS-based diagnostics (from a USB thumb drive) on the supposedly bad disk and got zero errors on both the short and long tests. Hmmm. Also used the WD program to turn off idle parking (wdidle3) on the WD10EARS 1tb drive.
Next my problems compounded after putting the 1tb drive in the dvr40 when it would not even display the "Powering Up" screen and no front panel lights at all. Thinking that maybe something was wrong with the SATA/IDE adapter I put the original IDE 250gb drive back in. Same problem -- no power. Sure looked like a power supply issue now. So I went on ebay and bought a used dvr40 and then swapped in the power supply from the ebay dvr40. Since the original 250gb drive had no errors on the WD diagnostic tests I left it in. Now the dvr40 powered on and went to the "Powering Up" screen (green light lit), but did not get past that. Oh well. Next step: put in the 1tb drive (with SATA/IDE adapter) and tried that. Bingo! Worked perfectly -- all my recorded programs and season passes still there. The nice thing about the $6.95 SATA/IDE adapter is that it has a drive activity LED that you can watch with the dvr cover off -- it pretty much is constantly flashing (even when no programs are being recorded). No wonder Tivo disk drives fail so frequently -- they are active 24 by 7.
So my question: how is it possible that a disk drive can pass all diagnostic tests but still fail to boot? The obvious answer would be corruption on the disk. But in my case we can rule that out since I had used dd_rescue to make an exact block by block copy of the original drive. I'm stumped.
Seeing as we only had a episode 1 thread and not one for 2 or 3 I think a whole season will suffice.
I really like this show so far. The characters are deep and complex and Ray is just a great character.
His support staff is mysterious as well, what is up with the chick? Is she a lesbian? The Russian guy is just a complete bad ass and liked when Ray tried to punch him and he just turned it around on him. Good to have a guy like that on your side.
Well. Wonder what daddy "Big Jim" will do now that he knows crazy Junior's secret. I kinda suspect he may leave her there. At least temporarily.
When do the pink aliens arrive?
I have a HD XL (TCD658000) with a failing hard drive. It started rebooting whenever we watched a certain recording. I ran a kickstart and it failed the SMART test with a Fail 7.
So, I used the MFS Live CD to create a truncated image, and restored it to a WD10EURX. This worked, but the TiVo menus are sluggish, and videos skip frames every 2-5 minutes. Reinstalling the original drive fixes both of these issues.
I believe that this has to do with the 4K format of the new drive, as the HD XL's partitions are not aligned (base is not evenly divisible by 8.)
I tried using dd to backup each partition (except for the 1st -- the partition table) to an image, corrected the partition alignment with pdisk by deleting and recreating the partitions, and restoring the data back from the images to each new partition. This allowed the TiVo to boot, menus responded normally, and videos played without issue. There were several problems, though... I didn't get the THX intro, TiVo Central wouldn't display, no background graphics on the Now Playing List, not all remote commands responded, videos continued to play when you hit the TiVo button, etc.
I also have a regular HD (TCD652160.) As a test, I used dd to clone the original drive out of it to the WD10EURX, and used mfsinfo -x to expand the capacity. As was noted in another thread on this forum, this resulted in all MFS partitions being aligned. When I booted the HD, I noticed that the menus were sluggish (as the HD XL was), but I didn't have the video playback problems.
From my testing, I'm convinced that the 4K sectors of this drive are causing the problems I'm having. Is there a source for the old 512B sector drives? Or am I going at this the wrong way?
I have been trying for the last few days, to get to the kickstart menu/settings/test to initiate, with no luck. (Im getting the s03 error when trying to get new program data on my Tivo HD Series 3). Ive followed the instructions but I think my Tivo Slide remote is cutting off in the middle of pressing the pause button. I noticed that after 3 tries of rebooting, the light on the top of the remote goes out at random points. Ive tried to repress it the second it goes out, but that doesnt work....
Has anyone else gotten the kickstart to work with this remote, or am I just crazy and mentally challenged? Is there another way to initiate the kickstart without the remote?
Can pytivo stream videos to my premiere or only copy? I am using win 7 ultimate. If so, instructions on how?
Also, i was using streambaby, but whenever i add metadata using metagenerator, it hangs up on "Please wait" when i try to load a video, then crashes and says app is unavailable. If i remove the metadata it works perfect. I can have the cover art, just not the info. Any suggestions?
I live in a 1939 Lathe and Plaster home with a tiny crawl space and no attic...So getting CAT5 or CAT6 wiring to the Premier XL4 is nearly impossible (not sure how they got cable in their, but have had contractor after contractor out, and with out huge cost its a non-starter).
So, I want to move the Premier XL4 into my office closet with router, then use Tivo Mini's on all of my TV's. Just want to make sure that's possible before buying the mini's and getting the subscriptions.
Thanks for your advice,
after much fighting, i finally got streambaby to work. couple questions tho.
On my showcases list, it says "stream,\032baby,\032stream. Is this normal?
Also, I was watching a .vob file today, (used dvd shrink and unchecked split file in options) and the time was all wrong after about halfway through the movie, It was playing fine, but said i was at 1:51. The total length of the movie says 1:51. Then, it all of a sudden quit playing, then took me back to my movie folder, and when i tried to rewatch, it had no option to continue where i left off. What gives?
This show is on Animal Planet. If you're into tricked-out treehouses, this is the show for you. My kids love this show!
The stuff they do is very cool, and the way it's presented, it looks pretty "easy," as in it looks easier than I thought it would be to build a mega-treehouse. But I know these guys are treehouse professionals, and it is TV, and it really isn't so easy.
The worst part of watching this with my kids is having to explain over and over why I can't/won't spend $100,000 on a treehouse.
I have two Premiere XL4's with tuning adapters attached to each. Like many others, suggestions have not been populating on either of my TiVo's from day one unless I unplugged the TA. That said, all of a sudden today I noticed a full page of suggestions on one TiVo and one entry on the other. I have not unplugged/rebooted either of my TiVo's/tuning adapter's in weeks.
Has anyone else noticed this?
I am a bit perplexed. I have an S3. It reboots during the silly welcome video after boot. Caps are not bulging, and I even changed the power supply for a new (pull) one that I bought off of ebay which also does not have bulging caps.
I changed the hard drive from a WD green to a Seagate a few weeks back using an image I saved off of the original drive years back just in case the drive was the problem. That worked for a few weeks, now it is back to where it was. Kickstart 54 passes and kickstart 57 runs for about 15 minutes after the GSOD then reboots and brings me back to where I started.
If it matters, the fan was replaced about a year back and it is spinning just fine.
Go Jason Stackhouse!
I was surprised about the turn Sookie's parents' plot line went.
