Roamio to Roamio scheduling

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 19:23
Hi, new Tivo user, just got a Roamio Pro used with Verizon FiOS.

I currently have four Verizon HD-DVR boxes, I can play shows recorded on one box from another box, but I can't schedule shows to record on a different box than the current box, I have to go to that room to schedule shows to record there.

If I buy more Roamio Pro boxes, or Mini's:
1) Can I watch a show recorded on one DVR from another DVR?
2) Can I schedule shows from one DVR to record on a different DVR?
3) Is there some sort of smart recording manager that will divide the recording tasks between all DVR's and use and share all tuners and all disk space efficiently?
4) Is there any quality or responsiveness degradation when watching from a Mini instead of the main DVR directly?

Thank you

Will Roamios work with Series 3 TiVos?

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 18:51
I know the TiVo Mini can't interact at all with a Series 3 since its basically a streaming device and the Series 3 are "transfer" only type devices. I have a few lifetime Series 3 and can they still interact somewhat (aka..."multi room transfer" recorded shows) with the new Roamios?

Mini Networking issues.

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 18:41
I'm having disconnect issues with my newly acquired Mini and brand new Roamio Plus.

The Mini works fine for a while, but then starts stuttering and at times throws up the network disconnect issue.

I have a cat 5 cable running between two GigE switches. On the office switch is an ASUS router/wifi, cable modem, various office equipment and the Mini. The Livingroom has the aforementioned GigE switch which has the Roamio, a wifi access point, sling box, Roku 3 and Roku Soundbridge. The cable between the two switches runs through walls, and has my own homemade ends, which I can't totally vouch for, but haven't given me problems till now. Last night I measured throughput between two computers with GigE NICs. First I did it with the desktop and laptop in the office off the same switch, got a benchmark of about 800 Mbps. Then I took the laptop out to the livingroom and ran the same test and got about 400Mbps. Given that this is way higher than the bandwidth needed for moving HDTV, I'm not sure where I stand. As a further test, I replaced the cable embedded in my walls with a known good cat 5 cable running between the two switches. I'm still having the same issues.

TiVo Stream FAQ

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 18:12
There have been quite a few questions about this recently so here is a quick FAQ for anyone who's confused about how the Stream functionality works...

Q. Which TiVos have a built in TiVo Stream?
A. The Roamio Plus and Pro have built in TiVo Streams, the Roamio Basic and all Premiere units require the standalone TiVo Stream box.

Q. Can the built in Stream in the Roamio Plus/Pro stream from other TiVos on your network?
A. Yes. The built in TiVo Stream works exactly like the standalone TiVo Stream. It can stream from any other Roamio or Premiere on your network.

Q. What's the difference between the standalone TiVo Stream and the one built into the Roamio Plus/Pro?
A. Nothing. The hardware is identical. The Roamio Plus/Pro simply include it on the same motherboard as the TiVo hardware. The internal Stream even has it's own MAC address and uses it's own IP address on your network

Q. How many streams can you have going simultaneously?
A. The TiVo Stream can transcode and stream up to 4 programs simultaneously. However each TiVo has a limit of 3 streams at a time, which includes streams to Minis and other TiVos, so you'll be limited to 3 unless you have multiple TiVos and at least 1 program is on a different TiVo then the others.

Q. Can I have multiple TiVo Streams on the same network?
A. You can but currently the iOS app has no way to select which one to use, so it simply uses the first one it detects. So even if you have multiple TiVo Streams there is no guarantee you'd be able to easily get beyond the 4 stream limit.

Q. Which devices can be used to stream?
A. As of right now only iOS devices can be used to stream. (i.e. iPhone and iPad) Android support is promised for the Fall. Support for other devices has been hinted at via surveys and demos, but nothing official has been announced.

Q. Can I stream outside my home network?
A. Not yet. TiVo has announced that they are working on this feature and it should be available this Fall. There is some indication however that certain premium channels will be restricted from being streamed outside the home

Q. Can I stream live TV?
A. Kind of. When you pick something from the live TV guide to watch via the Stream it actually starts a recording of that program and then starts streaming the recording to your device. You can not take over a live tuner like you can with the Mini.

Did I miss anything?

Is Roamio anything like U-Verse yet?

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 17:43
Hey guys, can you tell me if any of this is possible. We have 3 premieres in our house and wondering if we should upgrade.

-Pause on one tv, then unpause on another.
-Access recordings from other tivos instantly (right now, you download first)

Also, is the Tivo Stream just for smartphones and tablets? I don't watch stuff on my smartphone or tablet, so that's not important to me. But I'm wondering for TV viewing in another room, do I need another Roamio, or will the TV Stream work for 2nd and 3rd TV's?

Thank you in advance!

CableCARD / Roamio question ...

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 17:15
Is there any reason why I shouldn't pull an old M-card out of one of my old S3's and have Comcast pair it to my new Roamio? I assume the older cards are capable of supporting all 6 tuners, right?

Why isn't activation instant?

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 17:06
Purchased PLS for my Roamio, My Account says "We're still processing your activation".

Drunk History

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 16:32
Is anybody else watching this on Comedy Central?

It started from the videos and now is a show. It has his really funny parts. I do enjoy it.

Raomio plus/pro uses two IPs

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 16:26
I was looking around my network and noticed an IP that I did not recognize. Chatted with support to make sure if roamio pro/plus uses one or two IP's and they told me one - then after pressing found that this is the streamer inside the roamio that is using the second IP and there does not seem to be any method of contolling how it gets it - uses dhcp without a setup screen that I can find.

Anyone know how to manually set the internal streamer's IP?

Roamio streaming question ...

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 16:25
I just picked up a Roamio Pro today, and I'm trying to figure out how to best integrate it into my home. Can a Roamio only stream shows that are recorded directly on it, or can it stream stuff from other TiVos on the network.

HBO Go app?

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 15:58
So yesterday on Tivo's facebook page they posted a picture of a stuffed animal tivo mascot with a rose in front of the HBO building with a title of "Roamio loves HBO! Do you?"

Does anyone have any reliable rumors that this means an HBO Go app is coming for the HTML5 engine on the Roamio? Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I would really like this.

Collections - An easy way to record new fall shows

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 15:21
Not many people realize this feature exists, and since we're likely to see a lot of people moving up from S3 units, where the feature wasn't available, to the Roamio I thought I'd start a thread about it.

In the Browse section there are these things called Collections. These are lists of programs based on various criteria, some of which are actually maintained by real humans. These collections can be setup to auto-record just like a Season pass.

This time of year there is a collection for New Fall Shows. By setting it to auto-record you'll get all the new shows without having to manually keep track of when they start, what night they're on, what channel they're on, etc... If you decide you like a show it's easy to add a real SP for it from the My Shows list. (you can even do this from a remote TiVo or Mini)

Typically what I do is I set up the collection to record. By November I decide which shows I like and set SPs for them, then I cancel the collection. It works great for discovering new shows without having to wade through the guide or keep track on a website like Futoncritic.

Play youtube, netflix and others?

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 14:44
I have been using airplay for ever, and I even have a chromecast just for fun, but I gotta say, the built in DIAL of roamio is sweet. No need to switch inputs.

What other apps can TiVo use? Do you think more will come?

Netflix UI Performance?

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 14:27
Can any new owners comment on the performance of the Netflix UI?

This is a real tripping point for me on my Premier XL. I rather switch inputs & remotes and use my AppleTV for this function, but would much prefer to stay within the TiVo eco system for this stuff.

Though, AirPlay gets lots of use for Torrented stuff off my MB Pro.

Unable to log into TiVo app (iOS)

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 14:11
Anyone else get logged off of the iOS app and can't log back in (says incorrect pw but the pw's correct)? Wonder if TiVo's servers are having authentication issues.

Finding the next showing of a program

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 13:44
My Roamio Plus is sat at home - and I am at work! Frustrating! Anyway...

My Roamio will replace the Tivo HD in the living room. I've been thinking of one common scenario that I wonder may have been addressed in versions later than the HD (Premier, etc).

So, let's say I am browsing channels and come across a program that's in progress but of interest. I don't want to watch it right then (perhaps because I want to see the whole program) so, on the HD, I a) press the Record button b) scroll down to the "Upcoming episodes" option (or whatever it's called) c) scroll down to the next showing on an HD channel d) set it to record.

Frankly, that's a tedious and long winded way to achieve something that seems like a common scenario ("record the next time this is on in HD").

Has this been addressed better since the HD was released?

Roamio Looks

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 12:50
Don't get me wrong, I want to get the Roamio Pro to replace the Premiere Elite in the family room (with the Elite moving to the bedroom to replace the Premiere XL that is currently there, and selling off the XL; hey, once *that* happens, I'll have 10 tuners in the house capable of recording!), but does anyone else think the exterior style of the Roamio doesn't look nearly as, I don't know, "classy" as the Premiere? The Roamio is "cute", I suppose, but the Premiere just seems more stylish.

I couldn't find another thread discussing this specifically, although some have noted the cheap plastic look of the base model, so maybe I'm the only one? Also, maybe the Roamio looks better in person?

Remap Channel Numbers to What I WANT

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 11:28
One suggestion I would really like to see implemented is to change channel numbers. I think this would be really easy and a huge win for Tivo.

The channel numbers as generated by a cable system/ATSC are dictated by the provider themselves. Most channels will pay for position or in the case of HD channels are remapped into 100/200/300/400/500/600/700 etc. instead of what would be natural in 1/2/3/4/etc. What this does is break-up channels that might be better seen together for the Tivo customer. Favorite channels attempt to rectify this situation, but do not allow for the sequencing of channels nor does it have profiles so that multiple Tivo users could use them.

For example: a user whose interest lies in CBS/HGTV/DIY/ESPN/NFL Network could group those channels together. While another user in the household could do the same for their channels NBC/Bravo/DIY/ABC

Functional Description
Channel numbers would appear as they do today in the DVR. A setting could the be selected to use Tivo Channel Numbers. A user could then create a profile. With the profile turned on, the channels could be selected, removed and/or reordered to the taste of the profile.

The user may have the channels as shown below:
702 - CBS
728 - ESPN
652 - HBO
690 - DIY

The user could change these numbers to:
1 - CBS
2 - ESPN
3 - HBO
4 - DIY

Tivo when running in the profile mode would use these numbers, in effect acting like a "Favorite Number" in your phone. In addition, if a customer moved the channel numbers would remain the same in much the same way Season Passes get remapped when moved to another cable system.

Any channels that would be in those positions could automatically be remapped to another range of channels or specified by the user.

I think this is a great opportunity to bring a very unique and very compelling feature to Tivo. Tivo users would never have to rememorize their channels ever again.

What do I miss with a Tivo Mini

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 10:54
I am a long time Tivo HD user who just purchased a Roamio PLus ("out for delivery" at the time of writing :)). Anyway, while looking forward to installing and starting to use my Roamio tonight, I am curious about the full extent which a Tivo Mini might be useful elsewhere.

Aside from the obvious issue of tuners (I'd tie one up while I am using a Mini, but that's not a factor for me at all right now), I am interested to know what features I WON'T get on a remote Mini (as compared to sitting in front of the TV with the Roamio itself). Assuming solid networking connectivity, what features would I forego, as compared to getting another Roamio?

Trouble with DVR Extender

Wed, 08/28/2013 - 10:39
Just got the new Roamio, and tried to hook up the DVR Extender from my tivo HD, and couldn't get Roamio to recognize it. I was able to get my HD to re-recognize it, so I know the drive is still functioning.
Has anyone else had this problem? I called Tivo, and they are swapping out the box, thinking it might be a bad port. I guess we will wait and see.
