Viewing/Sorting Channels on the Box. Need Help!

Thu, 01/31/2013 - 14:26
Hello.

We just upgraded our old cable box to the Tivo box.

With our old one you could view channels on the guide by only showing HD channels if you wanted.

You could also view your favorite channels.

Is there a way to do these things on Tivo?

I read through everything and cannot find how to do either of these things.
I went through the original setup and marked certain channels as favorites using the thumbs up button, but I see no way to list only my favorite channels on the guide.

I also can find no way to only view HD channels on the guide.

Can you really ONLY view channels in the guide by channel name order and number order?

If so they really need to add a way to view the ways I discussed.
This makes channel surfing A LOT more difficult than it did on our old cable box...

Thanks!

Strange problem, maybe power supply or ?

Thu, 01/31/2013 - 14:13
Yesterday we had a power outage, when I tried to restart our S3 (THX model), there was absolutely no indication of power. No lights, no fans, nothing. The unit is on a good quality voltage conditioner, so there was no power spike. It just turned off with the outage and turned on when I restarted the power conditioner.

So then this morning, it is back on again and working normally.

I know it was receiving 120v last night, and I even swapped a power cord with another device that was working and continued to work with the S3's cord.

This condition seems a little atypical for a PS failure. Has anybody ever experienced this kind of problem? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Trying to upgrade my TiVo

Thu, 01/31/2013 - 13:51
Called customer service twice today to try and purchase a Premiere 4 to replace one of my HDs. Really weird phone calls.

The first person kept saying stuff about how MoCA was something new and not many people ever use and tried to bundle a wireless network card with my order. When I pointed out that one of the reasons I wanted the Premiere 4 was because of MoCA and that it was required (other than Ethernet) to use Stream or the upcoming Mini, she still insisted that MoCA was a brand new technology and very few people use it. On the price, she quoted me $249 for the Premiere 4, so I asked her if that's the best deal she could do. She said there weren't any promotions that I was eligible for. I asked about the BigDeal promo, and she asked if I'd received an e-mail on it. I told her that it was splashed all over TiVo's home page and in ads on Facebook and other places. She was totally clueless. She looked it up, and made me the offer of $50 off. At that point, her computer went down and she was unable to complete the order and asked me to call back later.

The second person knew about the BigDeal promo, and offered it to me without me asking (don't know if she'd read it in the notes from the previous call). I asked about transferring one of my current HD units to a Premiere 4, and she said that TiVo can only transfer accounts to "stand alone" units and the only stand-alone unit they currently had was the XL4 and I'd have to pay full retail price ($499) to transfer my HD to it -- and the only benefit would be that my monthly fee would go down from $14.99 a month to $12.99 a month. Well, I'm currently paying $9.99 a month for the HD I wanted to transfer (MSD price), so there wasn't even a reasonable monthly fee savings for transferring service. Since she said I'd have to pay full retail price for a TiVo to transfer service, I asked if I could just go to Amazon and buy a Premiere 4 (which would be the actual definition of RETAIL) and then transfer service to that unit. She said that it had to be purchased directly from TiVo to transfer service.

It's like they're doing their absolute best to dissuaded me from upgrading my HD to a Premiere. Wore customer service / sales -- ever!

Increase swap partition -w/o losing my recordings?

Thu, 01/31/2013 - 12:54
Hi TiVo Community-

I screwed up.

I have a TiVo HD (TCD652) with a WD drive that was manufactured in Sep. 2007. It was showing signs of slow failure
for the past few years. So, having some time over the recent holidays, I tried copying the drive and adding capacity
at the same time.
I tried WinMFS (winmfs_beta9_3f), but despite using the "administrator" account/UAC disabled (Windows Vista)...the whole works- for some reason the drives weren't being recognized.
No problem. I'm more comfortable with a command-line anyway, and have a "functional" knowledge of Linux.

I used the (great) tools @ http://www.mfslive.org/download.htm - (mfslive-1.4), and the nifty "Interactive Command Generator" @ http://www.mfslive.org/cgen.php

Unfortunately- I didn't select the "Custom Linux Swap Size" checkbox, and my new drive is a WD10EZRX (1T)... so
clearly I need a swap partition that's greater than ...let's just say 'the default' ;)

My new 1T drive worked GREAT for a few weeks (see: [before] and
[after]).

After a few weeks, my TiVo started to 'hang' at boot. Sure enough- I'm using a WD drive (with Intellipark) and
until yesterday, I hadn't read the various posts in this forum about "wdidle3". So that's mistake #2.
I've since corrected that mistake, set the Intellipark-idle timeout to "62 minutes", and now my TiVo is able to
do both a power-on and a 'soft' boot.

Due to the small swap partition, I'm now stuck in a GSOD loop.
I've been reading through this post:
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...370#post628370
"How to fix your TiVo if it gets stuck on a green screen"
...but it's wicked-old, and I think due to its age, mentions Series 1 & 2 TiVo's.

I'm not too comfortable/confident altering partitions on the drive... especially since this (new) drive is my
ONLY semi-working drive.

Last night I tried putting my old/original drive back in -just 'till I get the kinks worked-out with the new WD10EZRX
drive... but I was greeted with a "Welcome Powering-Up...", then about 5 seconds later.... a GREY screen.
Nothing more. The old drive sounds like the heads are seeking...but I left it in this state over night- and
it just doesn't seem to want to boot any more.

So- if I haven't bored you all yet.. on to my question:

Is the method described here: "How to fix your TiVo if it gets stuck on a green screen"
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...370#post628370
still applicable for a drive copied from a TiVo HD using MFSLive v1.4 (backup/restore) to "fix" the too-small
swap-partition size mistake ???

Another approach or thought:
I'm purchasing another WD10EZRX tomorrow. Rather than mucking around with partition re-numbering, wouldn't it be
_much_ safer (considering this is my ONLY semi-good drive) to use the same tools from the same MFSLive CD
and make a copy of my copy? This time- I'll use: backup -qTao - /dev/sda | restore -s 500 -zi - /dev/sdb
(and, of course, I'll set the wdidle3 correctly on the newest drive too!)

I appreciate any thoughts and advice you can give me.

Thanks,
John

The Americans S01E01 "The Pilot" OAD 1/30/13 SPOILERS

Thu, 01/31/2013 - 09:41
I thought this show was "ok". I really liked the leads Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, I'm not sure about the plot. It seemed really good until the FBI agent moved in next door. That seemed too unbelievable to me but I felt better when he broke in to the garage and was satisfied that their car wasn't used in the kidnapping.

American Idol - Auditions - 1/30/13

Thu, 01/31/2013 - 08:02
I have been asking myself why I'm still watching this junk and the answer came to me in the form of two moments...

1. The guy with the speech impediment. At first I thought he had a slight mental problem, but it turned out it was following problems from tonsil surgery... and then he sang beautifully!

2. The final contestant who was very short and the judges loved him. I didn't see the love for his voice, but the way he was treated was magical!

The rest of the show - meh. You can keep the antics of Minaj and Carey. It's all played up drama for ratings, IMO.

Supernatural - "As Time Goes By" - 1/30/13

Thu, 01/31/2013 - 06:55
Well that was in parts a really excellent episode. I thought minus a few continuity errors that might bug me for awhile, that it was a solid episode and I honestly had some John Winchester feels. Don't look so shocked! Got me some lovely brother moments and protective big brother Dean is back. YAY!

So let's get my complaints out of the way....

Not that I'm a Cas stan or anything but you'd think they would have at least mentioned him. Or tried to call for him to help or at least advise. I get they don't know what's going on with him but not even a mere mention of his name. (I'm sure the Cas haters were more than happy about that but come on). When Henry was talking about ingredients he'd need, the first thing I thought was "too bad Cas isn't around to zip off and get it all". Then the whole angel wing in the trunk. HUH? So they just have part of actual angel wings laying around in the trunk? ooooooooookay.

But the main thing. The demon. As cool as Abbadon was, this felt completely contrived and out of left field to me. Umm since when would there be anything involving Lucifer that Sam wouldn't know about?? And this hand picked bunch of high level demons that can't be killed with the knife? Why have we heard nothing of them either? I assume she's Alistair level but why the black eyes then instead of the white like he and Lilith? And why the new cool trick of "show me what you've seen" thing? I don't like that. It made her seem like she was the ultimate demon when we've already had them. She was very cool though so I'll have to hand waive it.

And WTF did Henry do? A blood spell? Dean said only angels could do them, he thought. So is this another thing they just decided to throw in there? I can't believe Cas didn't know about that before and say something to them. But then again we just learned that the angel weapon kills demons too.... which is still bugging me a bit.

Okay now for the good stuff....

The devil's trap on the bullet. HOLY CRAP that was cool. They should just always do that. Then they don't even need to get as close as they do with the knife. They had me there, I really thought Dean was trading him away for Sam because well..... it's Sam and in reality if there was no other option, you know he'd trade anything or anyone for Sam's life. So glad we have that back. Gosh I'm so full of brother feels still. I was gushing while watching it. I just wish Sam knew all the times Dean says these things. I feel like, especially this season, that Sam thinks Dean hates him for not looking for him. Oh well, I'll take what I can get for now on that. Won't put a damper on the good feelings. :)

And yeah, I had a few John feelings here, as they intended but I really never expected. Dean saying to Sam "he did the best he could" with that look on his face kind of did me in. He really loved his dad.

So I guess we know which side of the families each of our boys are from. Sam has the book smarts from Winchesters and Dean has the brawn from the Campbells.

Henry was a great character. I wish he had lasted more than a somewhat one off episode. Will anything from this have any bearing in the future? Will Sam take the key where the old guy told him to or try to use it later against Crowley during the whole tablet storyline?

Favorite line:
Henry: That’s the problem with you hunters. You’re all shortsighted.
Dean: Yeah, well, at least we’re not extinct.

Can I sub Premiere XL4 for Premiere?

Thu, 01/31/2013 - 01:29
In the past, I've replaced monthly out-of-contract Tivos with newer hardware without a new contract. For instance, I replaced a TivoHD with a Tivo Premiere (bought third party) simply by replacing the service number under my online account. Then, about a year later, I tried doing the exact same thing for another TivoHD, but it was no long allowed between those two models.

So here is my question: can I replace an out-of-contract Tivo Premiere with a TiVo Premiere XL4 (bought third party)? I don't want a new contract or to affect my multiservice discounts.

Thanks!

Primiere & Q/4 no longer see each other

Wed, 01/30/2013 - 23:18
Until approx one week ago, I was able to go upstairs to the Premiere and watch all shows that I recorded on the Q/4. Now each box says that the shows from the other cannot be displayed because of a network problem. Yet, both boxes see my two series 2 boxes and can transfer shows from them. The TIVO tech told me that I probably have unrestricted ports on my router. He really couldn't help, stating that I need to make sure that a group of ports are unrestricted on my router. I have an Apple Extreme. I can't understand why these two boxes are saying that there is a network problem all of a sudden. Any help greatly appreciated.

Cable Co. announces move to all digital... and I own a few STDT. Now what?

Wed, 01/30/2013 - 19:49
Just got this notice in the mail - see this link - http://www.advancedcable.net/coralsprings_dta.php to inform us that the cable system is going all digital. Here is my set up. 2 hdtv's 6 months old. 1 crt tv 20 years old. Now for my tivos. I have two series 2 Dual Tuners, and 1 Tivo HD. I use all dual tuners regularly and TTG and MRV. I cannot lose any of these functions. The cable company customer service rep says everything will continue to work because i have tivos connected to my tvs. Also, the video on the website above titled "Do you need a dta?" ( a gray button in the middle right side of the page) - the video says "if you have tivo, you're fine." However a few people have told me never to trust the cable company when it comes to conversions like this...

so my question is - will i be fine? Will my dual tuners continue to work? will all my tivos work as i explained above? i dont want to get digital cable boxes at all... any help or info is very appreciated. thanks,

Anthony

Please tell me I haven screwed up!

I just bought a used tivo series 2 with lifetime pls....it's for a second room with an HDTV...I'm not concerned about the actual resolution of the box as I know it won't do hd....but I do want it to maintain the aspect ratio of my cable box at 16x9...I was under the impression that it would maintain the aspect ratio but just be at a lower resolution and not hd....after looking around on the net (not finding much help) I haven found anything that confirms what I want to do...is what I want possible or will everything be "stretched"...and the reason I went with the series 2 was cause it was dirt cheap compared to anything else with a pls...

Serial Port to Ethernet Converter

Wed, 01/30/2013 - 18:57
Saw a couple of old posts asking about this but apparently the cost was too high for anyone to try it. I've done serial PPP and also had S1 boxes with Turbonet cards but for a much lower cost (than Turbonet) I wonder if something like this might work:

Amazing Comcast Experience

Wed, 01/30/2013 - 18:49
Just replaced 2 Tivo HDs with a Premiere XL4 and a Premiere and added a Tivo Stream. Took me about 2 hours to get everything set up and running properly and then I started what I thought would be a painful experience to get the cable cards activated. 15 minutes on the phone and all was complete with both Tivos working properly. I was shocked. In the past this has taken hours if not days with a Tech having to come to get it working.

Great experience with Comcast getting them up and running so easily and quickly.

Does TIVO always have a Fathers Day PROMO?

Wed, 01/30/2013 - 18:04
Well, I guess I blew it by not taking advantage of the Premiere 4 + lifetime deal of $549.99. It seems, now, that it was not a bad deal.

I know that they have had good deals for Fathers Day in the past and wonder if anyone knows if we can expect the same or better in the future?

I have 3 THD's w/Lifetime but did not know that the Premiere STREAMS which would resolve all of my FiOS Copy bit issues! It makes MRV useless here.

Hotel Impossible 2/4 10p

Wed, 01/30/2013 - 17:54
Anthony revisits past hotels. It's showing up as a special and not as part of the series so it won't be picked up with a SP. Unless something changes you'll have to set up a recording.

Series 3 vs. HD Tivo, which is better? which would you buy now if you had to choose 1

Wed, 01/30/2013 - 17:23
my family needs another tivo unit, but I'm having trouble justifying the expense of a Premiere + Lifetime, so looking at pre-owned Series 3/HD tivos that already have lifetime on them, since they are at least a couple hundred less...

I have an HD Tivo with lifetime already, but have never gotten to see/use a Series 3, so wondering how they compare?

excluding hard drive size from a comparison (am planning to do a 1TB HD upgrade myself anyways LOL), IF they were the same cost, which would be a better one for me to buy? The "HD Tivo", or the "Series 3" that had the OLED front?

if the Series 3 w/lifetime was $50 more than an HD Tivo w/lifetime (again, excluding HD size in comparison), would that be reasonable/worth it?

seems the Series 3 units had a MUCH higher retail cost when they were available, but that doesn't always mean better :-) the HD Tivo being a lot cheaper was why I ended up with one in the first place...so at this point, the HD Tivo is newer than its Series 3 predecessor, but is it considered better/same/worse in comparison?

since they're both older models, how's the reliability of them? one have more failures than the other? one easier to fix/repair than the other?

read somewhere else on the forum that the motherboard structure changed, as in where the TSN was stored, which could be relevant if you had a motherboard go bad, and could find a working unit w/o the lifetime you wanted to preserve...that on the Series 3, the TSN is in a chip which could be desoldered and moved to a working motherboard, but starting with the HD Tivo, the TSN moved to the CPU which is not something the average DIYer can do (and checking with Weaknees, sounds like even their repair dept can't do it??), so is this by itself enough reason to buy a Series 3 over an HD Tivo, price being the same? or are the HD Tivos overall reliable enough that motherboard failures aren't common enough to worry about?

thanks for any info in helping me make this decision :-)

Need help programming Harmony remote

Wed, 01/30/2013 - 15:52
I am trying to program my Harmony 510 remote to operate my TiVo and can't get it to use the colored a b c d buttons. The Harmony has 4 buttons across the bottom that the same colors and I am trying to map them to the TiVo buttons. I can learn the TiVo's colored buttons but when I try to assign them to the Harmony buttons...they don't work. Having the same problem trying to map the TiVo button on the TiVo remote to the Menu button on the Harmony.

Dallas 2012 Season 2 thread *spoilers likely*

Wed, 01/30/2013 - 15:33
Off to an interesting start, any redeeming value "Rebecca" had seems to be gone, but like her father before her, grew up listening to daddy rail about how nasty those Ewings are, and bought it all.

I don't believe for a second in the real world an annulment wouldn't be given, without question. But this is Dallas.

Ryland is as nasty, if not nastier than JR ever was.

They are really keeping quiet about how they've dealt with Hagman's passing, even going so far as to continue to update the Facebook feed as JR.
