Monday nights at 10 pm -- the dual tuner dilemma

Tue, 09/25/2012 - 17:03
We have a dual tuner HD Tivo, which is perfectly fine most of the time in terms of covering what we want to watch, but occasionally we run into the problem of three shows at the same time. This is the second season in a row that Monday nights at 10 pm air three shows that my wife and I are interested in: Hawaii 5-0, Castle, and Revolution. (Last season, in the spring, Smash was on the channel now airs Revolution.)

Last week, Revolution was the only one airing a new episode, so we got to check it out, and it intrigued us enough to keep the season pass. So we were left to decide between Castle and H50 as to which to keep on the TiVo, and which to watch online or sporadically when the other two are reruns.

My wife preferred Castle, because she thinks H50 is way too over the top. I preferred H50 for the following reasons:

- Hawaii in HD >>> New York
- H50 is supposed to over the top -- the whole point of it is to see what superhuman feats Steve McGarrett accomplishes this week! (Other than Jack Bauer, is there any TV character as uber-competent as McGarrett?)
- although both are episodic with some minimal long-term arc, the whole mystery of Beckett's mom's murder has gotten really tedious, especially when the deaths of supposed last person to know the truth turn out not to be dead ends
- yes, Ryan and Esposito are a funny pair, but so too are McGarrett and Williams
- Grace Park > Stana Katic

In the end, my wife relented because of the first point, figuring that Castle would lose less on the computer screen. However, she's also getting impatient with Revolution, so perhaps this will resolve itself in short order.

POE filter in an apartment

Tue, 09/25/2012 - 16:00
Before I ask my question, here's some background:
We live in an aprtment and have two Premiere XL4s, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. The living room XL4 is connected directly to the router. This one is also serving as a moca bridge to the one in the bedroom. I can stream between the two just fine. The Tx/Rx rates hover around 142 Mbps/112 Mbps.

The way the cable is configured in my apartment is as follows:
Point of Entry ==> Splitter 1

Splitter 1 connects to cable modem and Splitter 2

Splitter 2 connects to both Tivos.

I read on tivo.com that a moca network in an apartment wouldn't work because a POE filter couldn't be installed where the cable comes in, but it obviously works in my situation without it. Just to be doubly sure that my neighbors can't access my network, I set an encryption key in the moca settings.

So, my question is whether or not installing a POE filter where the cable comes into my apartment is a good idea or am I just trying to fix something that isn't broken?

Thanks in advance!

Reseting the clock on a "dumbed up" TiVo HD

Tue, 09/25/2012 - 15:16
I have searched desperately here and on google for the answer to no avail even thou I know I saw something on it years ago. My TiVo HD is unsubscribed and been used for 2 years to manualy record but the clock over time has strayed 36 minutes. I have delt with it but cannot anymore. I beleive clean and delete everything will reset the unit back to factory and I will have to do guided setup again while connected to my network. I'm just worried that doing this again might brick the manual recording capabillity I've enjoyed all these years. Are my fears unfounded?

Elite Freezing/Cable amplifier

Tue, 09/25/2012 - 14:06
Having major problems with elite freezing, my cable signal is about 90.
I live in a huge house and years ago had an amplifier put on to help our cable signal, and had a new one put on prior to getting the elite.
Would taking off the amplifier help my elite? Woud it ruin my signal? and finally why do I ONLY have problems with my elite and not my other Tivo's???
Thanks,

Partners: Season One Thread *spoilers*

Tue, 09/25/2012 - 13:53
I'll keep starting season threads so we have a place to chat... ;)

Not impressed. In fact, given how much I like David Krumholtz and Michael Urie, I was disappointed. Two very good actors, capable of so much when supported by great writing, and I was mostly *meh*. And the showrunners have impressive pedigrees too. Still *meh*.

Given the rocky history of so many sitcom pilots, I'll give it another week. But if it doesn't do a quick turnaround, this will be one of the first cancellations of the season. In fact, I fear with the rapid reactions of the networks these days, it may be doomed out of the gate.

Tivo Stream - Downloads and Stream Video Stuttering

Tue, 09/25/2012 - 13:37
Hello,

I just got my Tivo Stream 2 days ago. I love it, saves me alot of time as I used to have to download and convert for playback on my iOS devices. I am having a playback issue though. Sunday night I downloaded a program from CBS. I noticed consistently the video would freeze and continue almost like a stutter, the audio worked flawlessly. This would happen every 30 sec - 2 min or so, its really annoying. I deleted the video from my iPad and tried streaming and it would stutter in the exact same spots. I thought it may be my iPad since I have the 1st Gen so I tried it on my brand new iPhone 5 and had the exact same problem in the exact same places in the video. I downloaded the program to my computer using Tivo Desktop and it played fine with no stuttering. Last night I rebooted my router, both tivo's, and the Tivo Stream. I downloaded 2 shows from CBS and they did the same thing. I also watched a stream from SciFi and TNT to test and did not have the problem. It worked flawlessly. Although It kind of stopped working when I started a download on one device and tried streaming to another, I had to reboot the Tivo Stream to recover. So far it is only shows from CBS. I have only seen it stutter during the actual program (I haven't watched all the commercials but have not noticed it during the commercials) I also am downloading in Best quality. I have 3 more shows downloaded I haven't watched yet from NBC and Fox. I will check those out tonight, but I have tried watching a few minutes of each one and have not seen this problem. So far the shows that exhibit this behavior have been recorded on the same Tivo Premiere. I am going to try to record a CBS show on the other one and see what happens. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have 2 Tivo Premieres, Tivo Stream, Linksys E3000 router (Gigabit for ethernet and 802.11n for wireless) iPad 1st gen connecting to the 5 Ghz Wi-Fi and iPhone 5 connecting to the 5 Ghz Wi-Fi

2 Broke Girls: Season Two Thread *spoilers*

Tue, 09/25/2012 - 12:29
Back for Season Two of 2 Broke Girls...

Spoilers allowed for any episode that's aired on CBS.

I liked this first episode, they're off to a good start. I read where the time change from 7:30 to 8:00 (add an hour if you're an eastie) means they can ratchet up the raunch level another step. Hard to imagine how it could get any raunchier, but they're gonna try. I see where one of the upcoming episodes is called "The Pearl Necklace", so maybe they can.:D

{Oh hush, leaking the name of an upcoming episode for a sitcom is not a spoiler. Sit down and find something else to complain about.}

When Sophie cried out, " I want a golden shower", my wife asked my why the rest of the cast was laughing and making funny faces. I told her to ask her facebook friends what a GS was, but she didn't fall for it. I can't wait for the PN episode.

How I Met Your Mother - 09/24/12 - Farhampton

Tue, 09/25/2012 - 10:21
Well, they teased us with a shot of the mother at the end.

I must've missed something after Ted was talking to Klaus at the station - did they show Ted leaving Victoria?

I did laugh when Quinn met Nick at the bar and decided Robin no longer had feelings for Barney.

Nothing extra special or ground-breaking this episode.

Thanks!

Cable card not pairing, what would you do?

Tue, 09/25/2012 - 08:57
So I just re-activated my Tivo Premiere XL (2 tuner version) after growing tired of the HTPC experiment and using HD Primes. When I moved the cable card over to the Tivo, Charter entered the information I gave them (supposedly correcty) and the card will not pair to the card slot in the Tivo. On the conditional access screen I have:

Auth:S (good, means subscribed right?)
but
Val:? 0x0A (needs to be Val:V ...)

Charter is insistent on a truck roll. based on all the years experience I have had with cable card devices, it is my opinion that:

1) they have entered my info wrong somewhere (or the card has gone bad)
2) truck roll will do absolutely no good, short of installing a new card, which they could just FEDEX me cheaper than a truck roll.

What does everyone else think about this? Am I off base? I just dont have the 2-4 hours to sit around waiting for the truck roll, work is busy, life is busy.

Appreciate feedback, thanks!

Anyplace to see the 9/24 eps of Mob Doctor & Revolution?

My DirecTV is still out due to home repair. Is there any place to see last night's episodes of Mob Doctor & Revolution?

TiVo Stream + a local play simultaneously?

Tue, 09/25/2012 - 07:02
Just wondering - if someone is using the Tivo to watch something - and another party wants to use a TiVo Stream for viewing another recorded show elsewhere - can BOTH watch simultaneously?

Edit - I've just seen this - "With support for up to four streams at once, users can now watch previously recorded and currently recording content over their home network" - so maybe that's the answer. This at least implies 4 different mobile users could be simultaneously playing 4 different shows off of one Tivo Premiere?

Typing games for kids

Wakes up at 11pm

Since we had our Virgin Tivo box fitted, it switches on the TV at 11pm every evening. Is there a setting that does this?

Transcode Quality Changes after App Crash

Mon, 09/24/2012 - 20:45
So I'm experiencing the same crashing issues on my iPad 3, specifically around opening a folder and having the app force quit.

Something I have noticed: When I've setup some transfers in "Best" quality, and the app crashes, the transfers will still be there on re-launch but showing the "Good" quality file size on the transfer screen. If I let the full download occur it does indeed stop at that point, and the playback indicates the same file size/quality.

I can replicate this pretty easily; just start a transfer on best, get the app to crash (for some that seems to be easier than others), then re-launch and review the file size of the transcode.

Anyone else seeing this? Is there some reason that could actually be by design on the stream?

I'm on the iPad 3 ATT version, running iOS 6. The steam is indicating S/W version 19.0.1-01-06.
