Suits "Normandy" 2/14/13 S02E15

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 21:36
This thread is for the second to last episode, not the season finale!

I've been catching up on the second half of the season over the last few days. This episode is a good example of why I like Louis. He really did charge in as Rachel's knight and then when he couldn't help, he fell on his sword for her. Watching her cry at the end of the episode was heart-breaking. I had thought maybe they brought the new blonde in as a female to replace Rachel going off to Boston, but I guess not.

I'm less interested in this ongoing Folsom Foods case. I'd rather see different cases each week. I did like that they finally figured out only the women without children and families could get promoted.

I didn't mind Hardman in an episode or two as the adversary, but he's overstayed his welcome. I'd like this arc with Pearson Hardman knocked back on its heels to be wrapped up. I wonder if the merger will really happen.

Lines across screen on LIVE TV

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 19:34
Ok I have developed problem number two with my tivo, this forum helped me out with my first problem, I hope it can help once more.
1. the unit is about 9 months old.
2. the original 80 gig drive locked up and was clicking after 4 months.
I replaced that drive about 5 months ago with a seagate 160gb.
after i downloaded the tivo image from this forum I was back up and running on the 160gb drive.
3. New problem has now since occurred I have lines going across my screen during live tv playback thus when i record a show i record these lines as well.
the lines do not appear on the welcome screen or the menu screens only on live tv and not all the time some days i record fine other days i get lines then no lines then lines again... I videotaped the lines and posted on youtube.
I am hooked up with composite cables out to my dvd recorder then in to the tv set.
I will try hooking the tivo direct in a moment and then re post to rule out the dvd recorder.
Edit: I have ruled out the dvd recorder by hooking a new set of composite cables direct from tivo unit to the tv...
any help would be appreciated i have never had such a rotten unit in my life i have owned replaytv's now for over ten years and they still work and like i said this tivo leaves much to be desired having two serious problems in the first nine months if it would be for the fact i bought lifetime service on it i would **** can this to the garbage can.... thank you....
since i can not post a link yet, add the http : // www . to the front of my link and it will work for the video.

TiVo Mini Unboxing

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 19:15
To protect the identity of the "big box" store that couldn't resist selling me one of these I won't mention names but I'm sure you can guess :)

On a fluke I called to see if they had any in stock. At first they said they didn't even have that product in their system, but put me on hold to check the back. They came back stating they did have some and I asked for one to be held for me to pickup as they are "very hard to find right now", and they did so without question.

When I arrived at the store it was there waiting. Even with no SKU in the system it rung up without issue and I was out the door 2 minutes later. I picked this up literally 20 minutes ago and haven't even activated it yet. Here are some unboxing pictures. It should be running shortly, if you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll to my best to respond!

CNET's TiVo Mini Review

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 18:34
Not sure how long this will last in Google's cache, but Dan dug this up based on CNET's slipup earlier today. It's possible the details could change as we don't know the reason TiVo delayed the launch.

Sub-forums: Make up your mind

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 15:24
Why does the layout of the forum constantly change with these new sub-forums?

Sometimes it looks like this:

And sometimes it looks like this:

Why can't it stay the same all the time?

Overscan Settings

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 14:40
Is there anyway to chance the Tivo's screen size. This Tv in the place I moved into (And therefor can't replace it) majorly oversanes the picture, and I can't see anyway to fix it on the Tv. It's a Samsung TX-S2782H

incorrect times on ToDo list starting Sunday on HD Menu

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 14:28
Starting with this coming Sunday, all the times on programs on my To Do list are listed as an hour earlier than the correct time. I assume this has something to do with the change to Daylight TIme this weekend. The times are CORRECT on the SD , and also on the program info on the HD screen. I called TiVO, and they said they are aware of the problem, but did not say if they;re doing anything about it! I asked if, because the times were correct on the SD menu, if the programs would be recorded at the CORRECT time. They did not have an answer for that. Huh???

Did anyone watch the Agatha Christie episode last night?

My favorite ep so far.

Finch landing the Cessna in the flooded parking lot was a bit of a stretch tho'.

Wake on LAN

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 12:22
It would be nice to have Tivo send a Wake on LAN packet to my Tivo Desktop Server. My server is located in another room and it would save energy if I could let it go to sleep and wake it from the Tivo. I use the server infrequently but it would be nice to have it available as needed.

Wake on LAN is a little tricky to set up so Tivo probably doesn't want to support it. I have to grab my iPad to wake my Tivo server now.

The Syfy channel has ordered 13 episodes of "Helix," a series from Ronald D. Moore

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 12:19
The Syfy channel has ordered 13 episodes of "Helix," a series from Ronald D. Moore ("Battlestar Galactica") that will make its debut later this year.

I wonder if he has a plan?

My Series3 is possibly failing

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 11:23
My Series3, which is now... going on 6 and a half years old, seems to be having a problem in its growing age. However, this is a weird one.

I replaced its hard drive about 16 months ago, when the original 250 GB hard disk it shipped with up and died. I purchased and installed a WD Caviar Black 1TB SATA drive, and used an InstantCake CD to install a fresh software load on it, because I'd never backed up that original drive - oops.

Since that time, it had been fine. However, a couple days ago, it developed a new quirk. When watching two different digital cable channels with the two CableCARD S-Cards I still had in it, I would get massive breakup on both, whether they were being recorded or not (obviously either way, both streams get spooled out to disk). However, if I switched one tuner to an analog cable channel, and the other to a digital (HD or not) cable channel - no breakup. I haven't yet cracked my S3 open again since this happened, but I never enabled any of the AAM stuff on the new drive, so I can hear it running. It's not annoyingly noisy, but it's the familiar drone of a hard drive. This has not changed. (I'm familiar with the noise of a failing drive.) I could also watch an already-recorded show - no breakup.

I had bought a refurbed Premiere XL last fall, so I decided to take the plunge and move the XL into primary service, swapped out my two S-Cards for one M-Card, and now the XL is up and running happily. But, for the moment, I still have active service on my S3. I connected a Mohu Leaf antenna to it, and tuned two different digital OTA channels. Guess what? No breakup.

Anyway, my main question is this: Could this be caused by either a failing capacitor related to the CableCARD controller chip, or the chip itself? Or could my cableco have pushed new code out to the aging S-Cards that made them not play nice together on a single host? I don't really need more than one TiVo for myself, so I'd like to sell off my S3, but it's not lifetimed, and I don't want to sell it and claim it's OK if it's not (even though other than the oddness with two digital cable channels, it seems perfectly fine). Has anyone seen this sort of failure mode?

Mini with multiple Tivos?

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 09:47
I currently have a premiere XL (dual tuner) a tivo HD a dual tuner series 2 and an old single tuner series 2 (all are lifetime.)

I know that I need a 4-tuner unit to run a mini and will probably buy that combo.

If I do, will the mini only be able to see shows on the 4-tuner (linked) unit or is it able to browse and stream the other units? The premiere xl is the most pressing need, the HD would be a nice second and nobody cares about the series 2 units (especially because they are only SD and the picture looks crappy on larger HDTVs.)

The Big Bang Theory [03/07/2013] - "The Contractual Obligation Implementation"

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 06:35
Bernadette is quickly becoming my favorite character.
Bernadette: We can't all be Cinderella.
Amy: Then, how do we decide?
Bernadette: Well, it's simple. This was my idea. I'm driving. I'm Cinderella. You bitches got a problem with that we can stop the car right now.:D

Immediate Playback of a Recording

Thu, 03/07/2013 - 22:37
Let's say that I don't allocate any tuners for my Mini, so it can't display live TV. From the Mini, can I schedule a recording of a currently airing program and then immediately start playing back that recording on the Mini? Obviously one of my 4 tuners would have to be available at the time.

I'm wondering if this would be a workaround for not yet having dynamic tuner allocation. I won't watch live TV very often on my Mini, so I'm wondering if I can do as I mentioned above to watch a "live" show just a few minutes behind live TV without having to permanently allocate a tuner to the Mini.

S2 w/ serial connection no longer changing channels

Thu, 03/07/2013 - 22:35
We have 3 S2s (all single tuner) attached via serial ports to our Motorola cable boxes (2 are DCT2244, one is DCT2524). About 2 days ago, all 3 lost the ability to change channels. The cable remote still changes channels successfully. All connections have been checked, and Guided Setup and Settings run and re-run, checked and double checked.

We talked to Comcast, and they are playing dumb (and unhelpful). It sure does feel as if they've pushed some sort of change they won't admit to.

I remember having to use IR connectors back in the bad old days, and I sincerely DO NOT want to go back there. Nor do I want to "solve" this by having to buy new machines, when these have been plugging along just fine for our needs until now (one is lifetime).

Is there something we're forgetting? Any ideas about what else to check? Any experiences with Comcast disabling serial control in these boxes?

Dynamic tuner allocation?

Thu, 03/07/2013 - 22:14
Could so,some please explain dynamic tuner allocation and its significance in regards to the mini.

Samsung Smart TV and Tivo recordings

Thu, 03/07/2013 - 20:18
The new Samsung Smart TV’s are supposed to be able to play MPG files with AC3 audio. So, in theory an unencrypted Tivo recording should play. Has anyone tried this?

FIOS users: If you had to choose -- FIOS or TiVo?

Thu, 03/07/2013 - 20:09
Industry rumors have said that FIOS will eventually switch to IPTV. They're currently phasing out older boxes as they add MPEG4 channels. The newer boxes could also support an IPTV move someday.

If FIOS went IPTV (or did anything else that made TiVos incompatible) and TiVo did not have a solution, would you stick with FIOS or TiVo?

New HD UI To-Do list not showing clipped recording indication

Thu, 03/07/2013 - 17:34
I'm using the Fall 2012 update on my Premiere XL. One change to the new HD To Do list has removed functionality I consider essential.

In the old SD To Do list, when an upcoming recording overlaps another one by a few minutes, they will both record, but there was a clear indication that one or the other will be clipped. In the new HD To Do list, that indication is not shown.

I use these indications to know when to move one of those To Do items to another household TiVo. With those indications now missing in the HD UI, I'm forced to switch back to the SD UI (where they're still shown). Has anyone else encountered this issue, or found an alternate way to see this information?

(Tried working through TiVo forums and customer support, with no success. They insist in treating this as a feature request rather than an existing feature that was lost/broken in the last HD UI update.)
