Anyone not able to get the 399 MSD?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 15:13
I tried calling TiVo because when I added the Roamio Pro to the cart with lifetime service it was coming up at 499. The TiVo rep said that both the TiVo boxes currently on my account have used the MSD in the past to get the lifetime service so I would be unable to use the MSD on a new Roamio. Anyone ever heard of this before? I hung up and said I needed to think about it...

New Roamio Streaming capability vs Slingbox 350

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 14:33
I've been using the Slingbox for years. Just wondering what you guys thought about it vs the future streaming capabilities of the Roamio (outside of your network).

I actually bought a Western Digital Streamer with the Slingbox app and it works pretty good. It's kind of like a Tivo Mini just without the monthly fee and a bit slower. As a result I'm leaning towards the basic Tivo Roamio since I already have that and can watch tivo already through the slingplayer app on my ipad.

DIAL Support

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 13:56
Does anyone know if it is an open standard and will work with any software? Will we be able to use chromecast software to push youtube and netflix videos? And can we pun the chrome browser? If so, this is going to be huge.

How many Minis can a Roamio support?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 12:42
Is there a limit (I assume so) on the number of Minis you can slave to a single Roamio? Debating swapping out my 4 Tuner Premiere, 2 Tuner Premiere, and old TiVo HD in the basement for a new 6 Tuner Plus and a pair of Minis, but haven't been able to figure out if it can support two (or more) Minis. I already have a Stream as well, in case that matters...

Any chance JMFS will work on a Roamio?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 12:38
Planning on getting a Roamio. If current tools work might I will get a plus and upgrade it myself to 4 or 5 Terabytes. Otherwise I would go for the pro and probably still end up upgrading it.

Anyone care to speculate?

Trying to understand the value of built-in WiFi

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 12:29
Unless I'm a non-technical user that has NO wireless router in their house, what is the value of built-in WiFi in the new Roamio units? Doesn't seem to be a benefit for tablet or smartphone as remotes or viewing.

- Enables quicker transfers between Roamio <-> Roamio/Mini/Stream units around the house?
- Just removes requirement for Ethernet cable in config? (Tivo <-> Router)

What am I missing here?

Roamio Wi-Fi

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 12:27
Why in the world didn’t TiVo use 802.11ac wi-fi in Roamio? I am updating all of my Apple toys to the new standard. I asked TiVo chat and they were ho-hum, 802.11n works fine. So does my 1964 Pontiac.

Roamio OTA reception?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 12:03
I know the TivoHD had great OTA reception (so I've read) and the Premiere models did not. I'm interested in any experience early adopters have comparing OTA reception to previous Tivo models.

Roamio features that will (apparently) make their way to Premieres

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 11:45
Going through the FAQs here, I see:

(highlighting added by me.)

"Functionality is exactly the same," eh? So does this mean a 2-Tuner Premiere, along with a TiVo Stream (both of which I have,) will eventually allow me to do streaming away from home as well? Fingers crossed.

I also note this, and the curious wording:

That the note specifically mentions both TiVo Premiere as well as Premiere 4 Tuner makes me think that perhaps, now with dynamic tuner allocation, that a 2-Tuner Premiere might be able to connect to a TiVo Mini. Yes, I realize that they may be talking about one Premiere doing Multi-Room Streaming with another Premiere. But that this FAQ doesn't specifically note that a 4-Tuner Premiere is required to work with a Mini, makes me wonder, hopefully, if that is no longer a valid requirement.

Oh TiVo, please, don't screw this up for us. We've been disappointed for too long and I'm not going to buy a whole new TiVo (and deal with failing at transferring over my library of recordings) just to get features we should have had from the start.

Get a free TiVo Stream with purchase of a base Roamio

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 11:44
Thanks Dave!

This is a fantastic deal, should quell any complaints from users who wanted integrated Stream support on the base Roamio model.

Power button?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 11:10
I see the Roamio has broken with tradition and actually has a power button.

Anyone know what it actually does?

Does it put it in standby?

Does it just tell it that no one is watching so it will know it is OK to switch tuners?

Actually turn it completely off? (Probably not that since it still takes forever to boot).

Roamio / Android

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 11:08
Still no Android support? Is this some kind of joke?

What's the excuse now?

Where is DTA for the Mini? That was "coming soon" too.

Until these guys can enable the DTA on the Mini and offer Android support, I'm not buying another thing from these people.

Mrs. Schmidt can you hear us?

The Roamio total cost of ownership vs ?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 11:00
There seems to be a lot of discussion about the total cost of ownership of a TiVo vs the competition in the Roamio thread, so I wanted to start a dedicated thread, kicking off with a three year cost comparison of FiOS TV for three rooms -- who really wants to keep any DVR for more than 3 years? Not me.

The FiOS MRV DVR is $20 per month and each extra STB is $13. So that comes out to $1584 for three years, with nothing to sell at the end.
20+12+12=44/mo * 36 = $1584

A TiVo Roamio Plus with two Minis with lifetime service, and CableCARD rental for three years

Seems like the same, right? Except that at the end of the three years I can sell my old TiVo stuff. Assuming I get 60% of my investment back, which is based on the current resale value of a TiVo Premiere on eBay at ~$400.

This means the TiVo Roamio will be $840 cheaper than the FiOS MRV DVR after three years.
