My Bad motherBoard

Sun, 07/14/2013 - 19:35
I’m posting these results to help all the good technical agents at TiVo and all us frustrated customers who are dealing with Issues like sound dropping out and erroneous (network faults) The biggest problem I had in getting the problem solved was the poor continuity of communication that the TiVo origination forces on the tech agents and customers.

Everytime a customer calls into TiVo they get a new agent and a new incident number. If the trouble shooting effort is lengthily, as mine was, the file gets so long that no agent can quickly pickup where the last call ended. I admit I got frustrated many times because the agents all wanted to start with basic trouble shooting efforts rather reading the whole file for each incident number. But they never got frustrated and instead they stuck with me. Thank you all for that effort because we did solve the problem. It just took 60 days to do it

What was learned is very important for every Premier owner to know and also for every agent to remember. First never buy a TiVo without an extended warranty and don’t waste your money on a new unit. Buy a refurbished one because they have gone through more testing than a new unit. Also keep in mind if you need to get a replacement, as I did, only get a refurbished units. In my case that meant I paid an extra $50 for my TiVo because the new one cost $150 and the refurbished ones go for under $100.

So here is the nugget to remember Mother Boards can be unstable even when the unit is new. Weakness and the frequency of reported similar faults on the forum pages helped me first figure out this but it was only after testing a different TiVo at my install site that this was confirmed. One of my units had consistent audio failures relating to the HDMI auto enable & disable and it would not stream in HD video using Hulu or Netflix. A relocation test at the my home (moving one box to another room) proved that my supporting 15/20 network was not the issue.

Then when a replacement unit that finally sent it also proved that the problem was in the other TiVo unit. Oh listen to this! When TiVo sent a replacement to me they canceled my lifetime sub on the unstable box that I was still watch in SD video. Well it took 10 days for the new TiVo to arrive so I had to call and re-activate my Lifetime Sub box with monthly contract service. Since its got a 30day cancelation on the contract when its retuned I will be credited for the screw up in subscription that they caused.

Well that’s my story! If you think it’s acting unstable then send it back and save yourself 60 days of painful trouble shooting.

Due to golf coverage it looks like Big Brother will need to be padded at least 1/2 hour in some areas.

Moca vs Wireless n adapter

Sun, 07/14/2013 - 16:16
My family has a TiVo Premiere 4 that is connected to the internet and the TiVo service with TiVo's wireless N network adapter. We're very unhappy with the performance of the adapter. Streaming is extremely slow, and the interface as a whole seems sluggish.

I've done some research into alternative ways of connecting our TiVo to the internet, and so far MoCA seems like the best bet, but I wanted to see what you guys think before I order an adapter. So here are some questions:

1. How many MoCA adapters do I need? I thought I needed two, but then I heard that the Premiere 4 is already MoCA enabled so I'll only need one. Is this correct?

2. How much faster/stable are MoCA connections compared to wireless N and standard ethernet connections? Is streaming going to finally be enjoyable? How much of an improvement am I going to notice going from the wireless N adapter to MoCA?

3. What else do I need besides a MoCA adapter? Do I really need any POE filters?

4. Any tips or tricks with regards to MoCA?

Low Audio on NBC

Sun, 07/14/2013 - 13:51
I have a TIVO Premier, and Optimum Cable in Brooklyn, NY. Recently, recorded shows on NBC playback w/ an incredibly low volume. I nearly have to turn my external speakers up to 100% to hear the recording.

What might I be able to do to fix this - it's really annoying.

Tivo HD motherboard failure options

Sun, 07/14/2013 - 12:01
I think my TivoHD motherboard just went bad. No lights on the front, no Ethernet lights on the back, no fan spin up, no startup picture, but the hard drive spins up.

Troubleshooting: Press Tivo button to make sure it wasn't in standby mode. Replaced the power supply with one from a working Tivo HD. Replaced the hard drive with one from a working TivoHD. Still dead after each procedure. Also the PS from the bad TivoHD worked fine in the good TivoHD.

Tivo wants $350 to replace ($149 for new Tivo and $199 to xfer Lifetime). I've considered the WeaKness repair option, but it's $99 to diagnose plus undisclosed amount for repairs. Has anyone here used the WeaKness repair on a Tivo HD motherboard failure? Are there any other options to consider? Thanks in advance.

Wanted: TivoNet, TurboNet or CacheCard

Sun, 07/14/2013 - 10:01
After about 10 years of service, my TurboNet card bit the dust. I tested it in my other S1 TiVo (I have 2 :)) and it's definitely the card that is bad, not a software problem. So now I need a replacement because that unit isn't getting updates anymore (dialup is not an option, and I'd rather not do the ppp-over-serial as I'm too lazy). I can use a TivoNet card as well since I have a NE2000 ISA card I could drop in there. In fact that is what I use in my other S1. And CacheCard has built-in networking as well.

So if you have either a TivoNet, TurboNet or Cachecard that you don't use anymore, drop me a PM because I'm interested. :)

Sat, 07/13/2013 - 20:04
I going to replace my Hard drive Monday afternoon I hope. If I do a clear and delete the software still would be left to copy to the new hard drive? I should be able to keep the pairing intact.

Question about IFC HD channel

Sat, 07/13/2013 - 16:58

Possible DNS issues for tivocommunity.com?

Sat, 07/13/2013 - 14:14
I'm noting that I'm occasionally having trouble resolving www.tivocommunity.com. I've tracked it down to one of your domain's name servers, dns1.name-services.com. It either gives a "connection timed out; no servers could be reached" from nslookup, or otherwise gives something like this:
Code: > server
Default server:
> set type=a
> tivocommunity.com.
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
> www.tivocommunity.com.

        www.tivocommunity.com, type = A, class = IN
    ->  www.tivocommunity.com
        nameserver = ONWhPXbfMUWo.tivocommunity.com.
        ttl = 0
Non-authoritative answer:
*** Can't find www.tivocommunity.com.: No answer I suspect that this NS record may be bogus as well since I cannot resolve it.

TiVo N wireless adapter alternatives?

Sat, 07/13/2013 - 13:41
I have a Series 3 TiVo that I'd like to equip with a wireless N networking adapter. The TiVo branded one seems a bit pricey. Are there any alternatives?

This has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find it. Thanks for any help!

New Remote?

Sat, 07/13/2013 - 07:20
I just went to tivo.com and on the front page it says enjoy your tivo experience on another tv and it shows a remote with a tivo mini. But take a look at the remote, right above the A B C D keys there is a green button. What could it do?

If you record ABC 20 20 it might not record tonight

Fri, 07/12/2013 - 21:47
Guide data showed nothing listed for ABC at 10pm it jusr jumped from 9pm to 11pm. Set it for manual record, but if you do a season pass you might want to check if it's going to record. This was for OTA for KABC channel 7 in the Los Angles area.

Port 8080 and Suddenlink

Fri, 07/12/2013 - 19:39
I'm having loads of problems with my TIVO and port 8080 and its causing the guide to not update all the channel info in the guide.

Here's what's been done so far

Tech comes out and plays with first TIVO for 3 hours finds port 8080 blocked and forwards the port still doesn't open and the TIVO service won't fully patch so after trying everything he installs a used TIVO from the main store that already had guide info on it. It connects to the TIVO network and patches successfully
but port 8080 is still blocked so I turned off the routers firewall altogether port, still closed but he says that since its connecting to the service and patching now I shouldn't have any problems.

Well now after 3 days some channels have no info in the guide again, so
I started trying to fix the problem my self. I've tried everything possible I even went as far as removing everything out of the network and connecting the MOCA straight to the modem still the port is blocked and no the modem doesn't have any firewall or anything that would block any port.

I have a Tivo premier, a Netgear Mca 1001 v2, and a Motorola sufrboard 6121

any help would be really appreciated its starting to drive me crazy and the people from Suddenlink don't seem to know CRAP about what they are doing.

Getting "Hello TiVo" running / "Developer flag"

Fri, 07/12/2013 - 16:53

Since you can see tumbleweeds blowing through the TiVo Developer Channel forums, I thought I'd ask here: what's exactly required to get SDK-developed apps up and running? I've followed the steps provided in the Developer Guide (url developer.tivo.com/docs/read/sdk/guide ) with little success getting the "Hello TiVo" app to run.

I can see the "Hello TiVo" application get retrieved fine from the FlashAppServer on my Windows 7 machine, yet when I try to run it I get V301 errors. The TiVo forums seem to suggest I might need to get a developer flag set (url developer.tivo.com/forum/read/157875 ) which hopefully will happen soon? I registered my TSN days ago (even though my model - Premiere XL, was the only Series 4 model not available in the drop-down) and have connected to the TiVo service many times since then.

Does anybody have any advice or know who I can contact to get my system up and running?

Thanks in advance!

TiVo unveils blueprint for 'transportable DVR'

Fri, 07/12/2013 - 13:44
Just found this article. Not sure what to make out of it. Here's a small part of it:

TiVo (Nasdaq: TIVO) has developed a "transportable digital video recorder" which would allow viewers to download content to a mobile device using a docking station, USB or Firewire connections, according to a patent application published late last month.

The invention provides a transportable digital video recorder system. The invention gives a user the ability to record and play back TV broadcast programs and digital video using a compact portable small form factor transportable digital video recorder package. In addition, the invention allows the user to store selected television broadcast programs while the user is simultaneously watching or reviewing another program," TiVo states in the patent application.http://www.fiercecable.com/story/tiv...dvr/2013-07-12

Fastest way to xfer all shows from one TivoHDs to another?

Fri, 07/12/2013 - 10:46
My main TivoHD is month-to-month, has a 1TB WD expander attached, but is full to the brim with my OTA shows.

I'd like to transfer all the shows to another, lifetime, TivoHD (upgraded to 2TB) via both connected to a switch via Ethernet.

Is simply queuing up one show after another the only way?

I've transferred shows via Wi-Fi before and that took...a while.
