Series 3 (OLED) cap list

Tue, 09/24/2013 - 09:33
I have a Series 3 with some reboot issues. I am thinking it may be the power supply and some of its caps & may attempt to replace them myself. It has been suggested to just replace them all to be safe.

I thought I remember seeing this somewhere, but can't seem to find it with search. Is there a full list of all the caps that are in the Series 3 (OLED) and what to exactly replace them with? I think the previous post even provided links to Amazon on where to actually get them.

Stream connectivity issues

Tue, 09/24/2013 - 09:11
Looking for advice before I give up and ship the Stream back to the mothership.

Had Tivo for about a decade several years ago. I migrated to COMCAST DVR when they came out mainly because the user interface to Tivo was slow and not very user friendly. I have been watching the technology evolve and the prices of COMCAST DVR increase. Two weeks ago I decided to buy a Romeo Tivo.

The Tivo box is working fine. The user interface is a lot more responsive if still quirky. I have a Mini which appears to be functioning ok. It frequently loses the Romeo which is a bit of a pain but I can live with that.

My problem is the Stream refuses to connect to my IOS devices. I have tried several different configurations. Currently the Romeo, the Mini and the Stream are all connected to an Apple Extreme. My two iPads are both connected to the Apple Extreme and functioning normally. The ethernet connection between the Romeo and the Mini is working reasonably well with occasional hickups. But the Stream is not visible to either of the iPads.

I have done all the trouble shooting steps. Rebooted all devices, connected the Romeo to the mothership several times etc. The Stream appears to boot up correctly. The status light changes from orange to flashing light. The ethernet status lights present normally. After a couple of minutes the status light turns to steady white. And neither iPad will see the Stream.

I have deinstalled and reinstalled the Tivo ap multiple times. One of the iPads is IOS 6 and the other is IOS 7. Both connect with the router and the outside world normally. Neither sees the Stream.

The Romeo is set for streaming / sharing and is working fine.

I can manage the Romeo using the Tivo ap on either iPad.

Any ideas?

Is there a way to log onto the Stream and see its status?

Thanks in advance for any advice you have to offer before I ship the thing back.

2 Broke Girls - Season Three Thread *spoilers*

Tue, 09/24/2013 - 08:57
[spoilers allowed up to currently aired episode]

And we're back... Still funny, still on the leading edge of TV humor. I knew they would milk the episode title "And the Soft Opening" for all it's worth, and they didn't disappoint.

Your favorite lines from the opener?

Well, i'm glad that in Beckett's reaction to the proposal she was surprised because "he was so serious", which was my thinking, that it was a weird looking proposal.

i also liked how they talked a bit before she accepted, seemed more realistic to me than typical hollywood. but what didn't make sense was that he'd still be in NY. If it's a temp gig in DC, i could understand that, but i would think he'd have moved down there with her. Unless that's in the plan but they just haven't expressed it.

anyway, overall not a bad episode. the one thing though that i'm not sure i like is the "cliffhanger" at the end. i mean, really. the main character of the show is not going to die. we all know this. so it's just a matter of a "how" they'll get him out of it. Which is something that kind of takes away from the cliffhanger. There's no real threat to the character, we KNOW he's not going to die, so why bother? a cliffhanger should have the threat of something that could realistically happen.

Similarly, the Beckett standing on a bomb episode - you know she wasn't going to die, so it kind of took away from the drama. it allowed them to advance their relationship by his actions, but still, you knew there was no threat to her actually dying. Now if Ryan or Espo were on that bomb, you never know, the writers may be brave enough to kill them off, they killed the old Captain, so THAT would have had some tension.... anyway...

Anyone else watch this?
I was in because of Alison Janney, because usually she's awesome. But I think Chuck Lorre is taking a hint from the Two Broke Girls formula of seeing just how over the top he can be in 23 minutes.

How I Met Your Mother - "The Locket"/"Coming Back" - 9/23/13

Tue, 09/24/2013 - 08:36
Gotta start a thread so people can come in and say how much they don't like the show anymore... :p

There was some excellent stuff in these two episodes, and then some other stuff that just didn't work. First the good.

The Mother! And not only was she present, she was great. The Lily/Mother scenes were by far the best part of the first half hour. It was amazing how immediately likable she was, and fit right in. Then the scene at the end of episode 2 starts to give us Ted/Mother together, so we understand why they go well together and why we've been hearing this story for 9 years. Really out of the park on those scenes.

I liked some of the Marshall stuff, but it was pretty broad humor.

The Barney 'curse' flashback was pretty lame.

Barney/Robin, eh. I'm just not sure that works, but it's what we've got.

Did I mention I like the Mother?

Series 3 and Netflix viewing

Tue, 09/24/2013 - 06:08
I am not sure if I am missing something or not.

I have a Series 3 (two of them actually) and I am able to stream Netflix through them, BUT.......it doesn't save my spot.

If I am watching a series on TV, and I have just watched (say) Season 3, episode 4......it doesn't tell me that I am not at Season 3, episode 5. I have to scroll through the entire series to get to that episode.

It makes me nuts. I often have many days or even a week or so between watching, so if I can't remember what I watched last, I have to go online on the computer and go to Netflix.com and see where I left off before I can queue up to what episode I wish to watch.

Am I missing something? Is there a way to get it working the way I want?

Series 2 with Lifetime???

Tue, 09/24/2013 - 05:54
I have two HD Series 3 Tivos now with lifetime.

We have a 3rd TV off the kitchen that my youngest child likes watching. It is an HD TV, hooked up to an antenna and does have a Roku box for Netflix and such.

Anyway, my son loves the Tivos we have on our other TVs and would like one on that TV.

I really don't want to invest another several hundred in an HD Tivo, and a woman on our local moms' group is selling a Series 2 with lifetime.

Is this even worth it? Would it work for the TV (I know I won't get HD through it, but will it even work???) It would be hooked up to an antenna, we do not have cable. Would it need a converter box too?

IF it works, how much is a reasonable price for it?

Newbie compares Tivo Premiere to Sony and Cableco Boxes

Mon, 09/23/2013 - 23:40
Just wanted to share my TiVO experience. Just got a basic Premiere 2 weeks ago. I have used the Sony DHG-HDDxxx DVRs for 7-8 years, had several, still have 2 of them. As most know the Sonys no longer have the free program guide and are not so smart anymore.

TWC box- clunky, limited, but functional. I've rented them briefly to get more HD channels than the Sonys did, but could never stand them for more than a month and send them back.

Sony DHG- Were my dream machines for my needs. I was a low channel count user, and enjoyed OTA HD. Wonderful customizable playback features, inc. user set and named index marks, 4 FF speeds, lots of adjustments on playback. 90 min buffer. Loved them. Limited channels, one tuner. (That's why I had several). Free to use. Cheap to own and use once Sony dropped them in first year of prod. Mine are 8 years old and still record beautifully but the reliance on TVGuide only for clock and guide was a major negative.

TiVo Premiere. Pretty nice overall. I don't need TiVo for the web media, so that really clutters up the screen and OS for me. (yes I turned a lot of it off). Slow os, too many damm pages and clicks. jeez. Sony was slow but more efficient and had better remote design. Only 30 min buffer is weak. Playback controls weaker than the Sony, but it all mostly works fine. Search etc. is better than the more limited Sony, but Sony was from 2005. I like the Premiere tho, (I know there a more featured models) and anything to avoid rental boxes is a plus already. I'm thinking the Roamio is a good step up from the Premiere, but for a test machine the Premiere is good. I'd give it a B+.
The slide remote is great, mostly for the BT, don't care about the KB. I like the small size, but it is too slippery, and a little heavy.

Moca and Comcast Triple Play Coexist?

Mon, 09/23/2013 - 23:05
Moca newbie here.

Upgrading my Tivo (from TiVo HD), just got a new RoamioPlus along with a new house. I've done some research around these parts, and think I know how to get a moca network up with the Plus and brand new coax in the new house.

Comcast is supposedly coming out to install the triple play (call me a fool) tomorrow, but I had a couple of fundamental questions about Moca networking...

Can Moca coexist with Comcast phone, cable tv, and Internet all going over the same coax in house?

Does the Moca bridge in the Plus serve any device on my coax via moca adapter to Ethernet (or does it only serve Moca to the TiVo Mini)? For example, my PC could be hard wired to Internet via the TiVo, correct?

-- Thanks!

The Blacklist "Pilot" 9/23/2013

Mon, 09/23/2013 - 22:23
I had high hopes, read some decent reviews. But not for me, I'm one & done (technically, 1/2 and done).

After 26 different cliches & tropes were rolled out before the first break, I said goodbye. My wife lasted until the next commercial.

Bad guy walks into FBI HQ, sets briefcase down, takes off jacket, starts to unrobe. People just watch him. WTF people would be on terrorist lockdown if that happened. Then when they wake-up, the shooters surround him 360. 360! So they can shoot each other?

She's late her first day. But the helicopters can pick her up. And her husband gets pissed because his wife, AN FBI AGENT, can't break away after lunch to meet the baby doc. ON HER FIRST DAY.

And then the car crash trope. Puhleeze, not again. And then I checked out.

My wife stayed until the break, got up and walked away. I told her not to be swayed because I gave up. She said, no it got even worse.

Oldie but a goodie? Series2 Help?

Mon, 09/23/2013 - 21:52

I have a VERY old Tivo Series2 with lifetime, that finally died. Wouldn't get past the starting up screen. I assumed a bad hard drive so I used MFSTools and restored a backup to another drive.

This got as far as the Tivo animation screen, then video cut out and it will only boot if it's unplugged for a while, but never past the 'Almost There...' screen.

Any suggestions for next troubleshooting? Any chance its the power supply? Not sure what else to check.

Genealogy Roadshow on PBS

Mon, 09/23/2013 - 21:39
I just checked the To Do List, and despite my Live Guide showing Genealogy Roadshow at 9 PM on multiple PBS stations available in my lineup, the SP I set up when the show first appeared in my Guide Data says no episodes are scheduled.

Setting up a new SP from the Live Guide resulted in a second SP on the same channel, apparently with the same name.

I don't know what the bleep is happening, but I've nuked the old SP with no episodes scheduled.

We'll see what happens at 9PM.

Esquire Network replaces Style Network

Mon, 09/23/2013 - 20:59
Esquire Network Boss Expects Style Network Transition Will Be ‘Natural and Intuitive’

Quote: In what seemed to the outside world as an eleventh hour decision, NBCUniversal announced two weeks ago that Esquire Network would replace Style instead of previously announced G4.

On Monday, the transition occurs in 75 million American homes and the new male-centric network’s boss says that Style’s predominately female audience may not be totally put off by the new programming.

“Certainly, we’re focused on establishing a decidedly masculine experience but it’s absolutely going to be a brand that’s very accessible and very welcoming to women along the way,” Esquire Network’s president, Adam Stotsky, told TheWrap.

"“Obviously, our programming areas are based on some of the same content areas as Style, just with a more male focus."

“Our insight is that there’s a white space in the television dial,” Stotsky explained. “Outside of sports and news from our point of view, there really is no singular lifestyle destination that explores the wide range of interests that men have today.” My comments are not really appropriate for a family-friendly forum. But if you're curious about why your Style Network SPs aren't going to be picking anything up anymore, now you now why.

Why would I need a cable card? Any alternative?

Mon, 09/23/2013 - 18:42
So I just bought a Tivo Premier after replacing my Tivo S2.

I don't subscribe to cable. I do get regular channels though Time Warner though. My building has it set up where all I have to do is plug the cable wire from the wall to my tv (or now my Tivo). I get all the regular local channels in SD & HD, plus any of the regular channels that are provided when you get OTA channels.

So I set my Tivo up and noticed that the HD channels are black. It will not receive signal. But if I switch to the antenna channels, I get the HD channels. The problem is that there is no guide or any information shown for those channels. Just the channel number.

This makes it difficult because I can not set season passes or schedule recording for any of the antenna HD channels unless I get a cable card. I have no subscription to Time Warner so there is no way i can get one.

Is there an alternative. It's really annoying. I can set them to record on the SD channels but really... I havn't looked at an SD channel since I got my HDTV a few years ago. I do not want to record in SD.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you :)

V53 error and signal strength

Mon, 09/23/2013 - 17:14
I am having two issues with my Roamio.

1. The Tivo will not maintain a constant connection with my wireless router.

2. I am receiving a V53 (signal error) occasionally on some channels. This will go away after a period of time.

I called Tivo and they said that my Signal Strength of 100 is too high, and that is the cause of the V53 and possibly the Wifi error.. They said to call Charter and tell them my signal strength is too high and to have them fix it.

I am on hold with Charter now but the person I talked to seems very confused. Does anyone have any insight on this? Is Tivo's diagnosis of the problem seemingly accurate? I am not sure how the Wifi issue could be related to signal strength....

My Router is a Cisco E4200 V2

Thanks in advance

update: The person on the phone had no idea what I was talking about, but said she would send a tech out tomorrow to look at it... I have a feeling the tech isn't going to find anything wrong and I am going to get charged $45 for the service visit...

TiVo Roamio unable to buffer/record one specific channel

Mon, 09/23/2013 - 17:08
I bought a Roamio a week or two ago to replace a Premier box. I have Comcast cable in the Seattle area.

In my Roamio, I'm unable to record or buffer at all on channel 113 (my local FOX affiliate). If I watch it for several minutes (the picture comes in just fine!) I still cannot press the instant replay button (I get the TiVo Boing sound). If I pause it for a few minutes and press play, it instantly catches me back up to live. The green bar does not fill up.

If I attempt to record on this channel, watching while recording causes it to display a black screen with something along the lines of "Recording program, press Play in a few seconds to begin."

The cable card signal and snr on this channel are fine (at least as good as others). I've tried rebooting, redoing guided setup, putting all tuners on this channel, putting only one tuner on this channel. Nothing seems to have any effect at all.

I called TiVo, they said they'd never seen this problem before, had me walk through my cable card diagnostic menus, couldn't find a problem, and then told me to get a new cable card. Comcast doesn't want to give me a new cable card (at least without wasting my time by sending out a technician), and tells me it's my Tivo boxes fault.

Should I call TiVo and insist on a replacement? Something's clearly wrong here.
