NBC orders a pilot episode of Murder, She Wrote reboot

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 14:15
Quote: NBC has given a put pilot committment to a Murder, She Wrote reboot starring Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (The Help), our sister site Deadline reports.

Alexandra Cunningham (Desperate Housewives, Prime Suspect) will write — and executive produce with David Janollari — the project, which will put a new twist on CBS’ long-running smash. Spencer’s character is described by Deadline as “a hospital administrator and amateur sleuth who self-publishes her first mystery novel” and sets out to help solve real-life crimes. They really need to stop with the reboots. Bionic Woman, Knight Rider, V, Ironside, Mockingbird Lane (The Munsters), Charlie's Angels.

Any takers?

Best Android app to control a TiVo?

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 14:13
In the Google Play store I see the TiVo app, DVR Commander by Anthony Lieuallen, and Network Remote for Tivo by Matthew Kennedy. I have a Roamio Basic if it matters.

MoCa for this dummy

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 14:01
I have the base four tuner Roamio than I connect to our network wirelessly with a N level router. The connection works well enough, but not perfectly. While I can always get HD on Netflix, youtube usually looks terrible, and TiVo service search results often run into extended sessions with the good old wheel of patience. None of this is a huge deal on its own, but all too frequently, probably daily on average, I get the C133 error and need to unplug and replug my router. Using Ethernet cords is not preferable to just simply dealing with these problems so we have left the situation well enough alone.

Is MoCa? I know next to nothing about the tech, but the little I have read seems like sorcery. I buy one and suddenly the cable in my wall also transmits internet? This is witchcraft. Could someone explain to me what exactly I'd need to buy and how I would hook it up? Also, what are the pros and cons? Thank you.

IR Adapter

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 13:45
I bought the IR Adapter for my Series 3. I want to put the tivo in an equipment closet. The Tivo website said that it would work on any unit that has a USB port. Tivo technical service also said that it should work since I have a USB port. The adapter doesn't work, though. A red light in the adapter flashes everytime I push a button on my remote, but the tivo doesn't respond. The instructions also say that the adapter is for a Series 4 (I didn't have that info until I got the actual unit). So, I'm guessing that the Series 3 software simply doesn't support the IR adapter. Has anyone had success with it?

Revolution - 10/23/2013

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 13:21
This show is starting to remind me of Jericho.

Season one, hardships, no power, rebuild slowly after nukes, no food, everything closed, food stolen

Then Season 2, 'Jericho is on the fasttrack', US Army comes in, power restored and the restaurant is serving beer and hamburgers within first 20 minutes of S02E01

The difference is Revolution season 2 has completely removed itself from its season 1 premise. Power, restore power, rebuild society. Season 2 has turned into a them vs us war/violence show

TIVO.COM Login slow or times out!

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 12:02
This happens more and more. I do not know why, but the tivo.com login is slow and often times out. Even if it does connect, changing tivo's (we have 3) can take a long time, and trying to add a show or series online is even slower.

Am I the only one to notice that it is happening more and more lately? I can not even log on this morning!

TiVo not recording FXX shows

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 11:58
How can I record the FXX shows?

As we know, shows like the League and It's always Sunny in Philidelphia have moved to FXX.

I adjusted my season pass and it did not record. I confirmed there were no conflicts and delete and reset that pass, but it didn't record again. I'm about 6 weeks in and nothing we've done, including power cycling everything has helped.

FXX is shown on my guide as channel 725 so I set it to record, but when I view the pass, it defaults that record to channel 5 and never records anything.

At this point, we planning on getting rid of the TiVo and going with something like Hulu. The channel change isn't TiVo's fault, but my friends and neighbors with regular Comcast DVR's have no trouble recording these same shows.

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Roamio, Comcast Chicago VoD and Mini MoCA questions

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 10:46
Right now I have two TiVo HD units going, one in the front room and one in the bedroom.

From what I can see, I think replacing the front room DVR with the Roamio and putting a Mini in the bedroom would be ideal. However, I have a couple of questions about networking...

I see the new TiVo units support MoCA, but the brief reading on TiVo.com I did didn't exactly answer my question. I THINK this means that I no longer have to have either Ethernet or Wi-Fi going between the Roamio and the Mini. True? I had Comcast out yesterday to move an outlet and was pinging the tech on MoCA and he could only relate to their X1 DVRs, but he stated that even though I'm in a condo, our cable is wired "per unit" and a MoCA filter could be put on our connection to filter out MoCA traffic from adjacent units. Does either TiVo unit come with a MoCA filter?

Secondly, does anyone know if Comcast VOD on the TiVo is supported in Chicagoland yet? Specifically, out of the Comcast Romeoville head end? Is VoD usable on the Mini if it's slaved off of the Roamio?

New Stream SW finally fixes an annoyance

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 10:33
Just checked and my ipad updated the tivo SW. Now, when I download, it is actually defaulting to medium quality, not high quality. It was such a pain to have to continually choose this.

Time to fill the ipad for spain on saturday.

Best Video Podcasts

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 10:17
Just got a new Tivo Roamio and discovered it lets you add season passes to video podcasts!

I immediately added This Week in Tech and iPad Today, but don't know of any other video podcasts.

Which ones do you watch? Any suggestions? Any good exercise/yoga video podcasts?

Activate TIVO with Verizon

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 10:12
I recently purchased a TIVO Premiere. I use a Verizon internet connection. I cannot activate. I do not have access to any other broadband internet, my phone line will only accept a dial-up modem. My verizon hot-spot provides me high speed internet, I can use Net-Flix, and it does support on-line gaming. I spoke with the Geeks at Best Buy, they recommended a wireless NetGear adapter, it would not work with the TIVO. The TIVO sales and service reps both suggested I try a forum, 'cause they are aware others have used the Verizon internet connection, but TIVO does not support it officially yet. Hope someone can help me...I'm a retired guy with basic tech skills, so please be gentle with me! Thanks

American Horror Story: Coven 10/23/2013 "The Replacements"

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 10:11
Well, that was disturbing on so very many levels!

I can't decide which was worse- the Minotaur sex or the sexual abuse of FrankenKyle. Do we think Queenie was voodoo-ing beasty rape to Madame LaLaurie, or giving herself to "someone special"?

Madame LaLaurie's reaction to a black President was priceless, though.

Mini updated to 20.3.7 and now won't play from XL4

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 09:59
When I try to play a recording from the XL4, it says the network is too slow and won't play the recording. This started happening right after the mini update to 20.3.7. The network seems fine and everything else works OK. Anyone else seeing this?

FS: Lifetime base Roamio

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 09:32
Lifetime Roamio base model purchased from TiVo on launch day.

Disappointing that my Cable Co restricts nearly every channel from streaming and downloads, and will likely need to get a unit with component out + Slingbox to get around this nonsense.

Asking $550 or best offer. Trades (with add'l cash of course) for a lifetime Roamio Plus will be considered.

Person of Interest - S3E5 - Razgovor (10/22/13)

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 09:17
I thought this episode deserves its own thread. It was the best episode of the season so far and not only featured Shaw but gave us a little background on the character.

It was a great episode.

Shah had a little character growth (and kicked a lot of ass)
Detective Carter got the drop on her partner.
Reese had a fight with the main HR bad guy.

And lastly Root makes a brief but impactful appearance at the end of the episode ("Did you miss me? We're going to have so much fun together.")

This episode was firing on all cylinders.

Roamio, Xfinity on Demand, and Caller ID display

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 08:31
Just looked at the Roamio for the first time yesterday, at Best Buy, discovered that Xfinity on Demand support via these TiVo DVRs is now available in my market.

My understanding is that the same "2-way" communication that enables this is what makes Comcast cable boxes capable of posting Caller ID information to the TV screen when calls come in.

Any idea whether the Caller ID on the TV happens with an "Xfinity on Demand" capable Roamio?

I read a few ancient threads in the help forums that talked about placing an external caller ID box between the phone jack and the TV as a way of implementing this, but they also mentioned that doing so blacks out the TV screen while the phone info is being displayed, and that the phone info shows up on any recordings made using that approach.

I didn't bother to ask the "Geek" at Best Buy once he told me that
1. He'd never heard of expander drives
2. Even if they existed, he was certain that they didn't work with Roamios
3. He appeared incredulous when a customer who overheard my question pointed out that the Roamio DOES have an eSATA port for exactly this purpose, AND that the basic drive in the Roamio can easily be swapped for a larger one in order to avoid the foibles of expander drives anyway (the Geek was clueless on each of those points).

Survivor - Blood vs Water : OAD 10-23-2013

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 07:49
Color me happy that Brad is gone. When I saw the challenge had a balance beam + puzzle I figured Laura was a shoe-in for the win. Of course, the puzzle itself wasn't very puzzling, but she killed them on the balance beam so it didn't matter. What the heck was that little bit of poetry from Brad? Sail hard?

I can't believe the mistake Tina and Laura made with the basket. That just makes no sense at all. We know the teams are given a LOT of briefing about how the challenge works that we never see, but they looked completely baffled as they came out of the water. It was nice that they came back to make a contest of it, but they really deserved to lose that one.

And Cat, what the hell was she thinking? She talked herself right out of the game. They never learn.

It's a fun season!

Roam Free, Baby - TiVo Begins Out-of-Home Streaming Service

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 07:23
Roam Free, Baby!

Out-of-Home Streaming for TiVo Roamio(TM) Users Delivers Live and Recorded Content via Wi-Fi Anywhere, Anytime

First Set-Top-Box for Cable Subscribers That Enables Out-of-Home Streaming; Makes Cable an Even Better Experience for TV Lovers

SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/24/13 -- TiVo Inc., a leader in advanced television services and the creator of digital video recorders (DVRs), announced today the launch of out-of-home streaming on the TiVo Roamio Pro and TiVo Roamio Plus DVRs, letting you stream and download your live TV and recorded content to your smartphones and tablets from anywhere.

"Until now, your shows have been locked up in your set top box at home," said Jim Denney, Vice President of Product Marketing at TiVo. "Now with a TiVo Roamio DVR, whether it's a hotel in Denmark, the waiting room at the dentist office, when you're stuck at the airport, or at the gym, out-of-home streaming gives you the level of choice, control and freedom that consumers have come to expect from TiVo."

TiVo Roamio combines the functionality of a DVR, Apple TV, Roku and Slingbox and even with all of those devices in your entertainment center you still wouldn't have access to everything a Roamio can do for you. Cable provides a phenomenal experience and TiVo Roamio makes it even better by extending it anywhere and making it stickier benefiting both cable subscribers and operators.

While doing what other cable set-top-boxes don't do: combine all the best of linear TV with all the best over-the-top content, TV lovers now have the ability to roam free and both control and consume from out of the home through a mobile device. The new TiVo mobile experience includes full mobility and control:

-- Out-of-home & in-home streaming: watch your live or recorded shows remotely anywhere you have Wi-Fi
-- Out-of-home and in-home downloading: download your content to enjoy anywhere so that low bandwidth or lack of a Wi-Fi connection never slows you down
-- What to Watch Now: no matter where you are, TiVo's second screen dashboard provides instantaneous personalized recommendations the
second you pull up your TiVo app
-- Remote scheduling: view the programming guide, manage recordings or set a Season Pass any time -- no matter where you are
-- Mobile Search & discovery: figure out what's on whether you're in the office or a hotel and enjoy the same browsing tools you have with your TiVo at home (including the TiVo editorial Collections and show, cast and actor information)

"The TiVo Roamio has reset the bar for what a DVR can do," said Colin Dixon, Chief Analyst and Founder of nScreenMedia. "Making all that functionality and content available anywhere will allow users to get more value from the content they already pay for, cementing TiVo as the market-leading personal TV solution."

The TiVo Roamio DVR Series includes three models: TiVo Roamio ($199.99), TiVo Roamio Plus ($399.99) and TiVo Roamio Pro ($599.99). Roamio features four or six tuners and unprecedented storage (ranging from 75 hours to 450 hours of HD content) ensuring you will never miss a show again and have plenty of space for all the shows and movies you need at your fingertips.

All subscribers with a TiVo Roamio Pro and TiVo Roamio Plus will automatically receive the out-of-home streaming feature via an automatic software and mobile app update starting today. Base-model TiVo Roamio requires separate TiVo Stream to enable out-of-home streaming (and support for out-of-home streaming for existing users with a TiVo Stream is scheduled for next month). Support for streaming over 4G/LTE and to Android devices is scheduled for 2014.

Out-of-home streaming requires an Apple iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch device running iOS 5.1 or higher, and only supports streaming to one of your mobile devices at a time. Due to the copy protection assigned by the content provider, not all content can be downloaded to your mobile device for offline viewing, and not all content can be streamed when you are away from your local network. Visit tivo.com for additional terms and restrictions that apply.

Out Of Home Streaming Released - Roamio Plus, Pro Only

Thu, 10/24/2013 - 07:01
It seems Tivo Updated the IOS app to work out of home but only if you have a Roamio Plus or Pro. An article claims only when on a wifi network for now.

No word on the if the stand alone stream will get OOH.

Cool feature I just discovered with the IPAD app. You may already know this, but in..

Wed, 10/23/2013 - 21:40
While I realized that the IPAD app could stream from my TIVO Roamio, I had assumed it worked like a slingbox: I would stream whatever was viewing on my TIVO. However, tonight I discovered that what I am streaming on my IPAD is not the same show as what is on my TIVO. Basically, this means that my fiance and I can watch two shows off of the TIVO (or live!) at once. Or I can watch two live NFL games at once on Sunday (one on the TIVO and one my IPAD). Maybe others already knew about this feature, but that's pretty sweet!
