Increase in Recording Quality/Size in mid-December - across channels and Tivo's

Sun, 02/03/2013 - 14:42
I've talked to Tivo twice - and poured over threads about recording quality. I see people saying that digital channels (including sd channels) will just record at the quality and file size they are transmitted - that there is no such thing as the ability to select basic, medium, high or best quality. I see that people have said that if you're using a cable card and getting digital channels, that you simply get the file size that is transmitted.

However - my experience is different than these claims. And the impact on me is huge. I have bought two Tivo Elites (now called XL4). I like to keep a lot of recordings - and would not have the space to store all of it if it were in high/best quality sd or hd. For a couple of years (after Comcast became all digital - and with cable cards the whole time), I have been recording series that I'd like to keep in sd (on basic or medium quality). Each 1/2 hour sitcom (for example) would be about 350-550 MB. This quality and file size would allow me to get the 2774 hours of sd recordings that Tivo claims you can get with a 2TB drive. And I wanted that many hours of recordings.

Last month, everything changed. At some point in December (between the 4th and 11th) - I think after the fall update, I noticed that my sitcoms were now 2100MB in size. When I first went to Tivo Desktop plus to pull it to my PC (for commercial cutting with VideoRedo) and eventual storage, I noticed that some of these 1/2 hour sitcoms were over 2GB in size. At first I thought that the fall update might have reset my season passes to record from the HD channels. So once the holiday busy-ness was over, I re-did some of my season passes. Then discovered that they were definitely recording on the sd channel (ABC, NBC, FOX,, Nick, TBS, BBC, G4 - as far as I have noticed, this is occurring on all channels) - but were recording as highest quality and largest file size. Then I thought that perhaps the fall update changed the recording quality to a default of highest quality.

I have a Tivo premier and went in and made sure to set the recording quality on basic. I went to change the recording quality on the two Tivo Elites (Tivo 4's) - and saw there was no option to choose recording quality on these. I called Tivo twice - both people were surprised at this and unaware of it - but both checked. One said what I've read here - that digital channels will record at whatever quality/size they are broadcast. Tivo has nothing to do with that size. But - again - until mid-December, I was able to record sd channels at different qualities and file sizes across all my Tivos (Tivo 4, premier and HD). The other Tivo rep said there should be some software change they can make and he'll escalate my issue bc. I would not have bought the last Tivo XL4 if I'd only be able to record about 500 sd hours.

It seems that none of what I've read or heard reconciles with my experience. I have a Tivo Elite I got in April, 2012. It is filled with sd recordings I've made. I have one hour dramas (like Parenthood) with a file size of 990MB up until Dec, 4, 2012. After that, an hour episode (same channel) is 2100MB large. It's also striking to me that both 1/2 hour sitcomes and full hour shows in sd are both 2100MB. Same with Dr. Who (BBC) - one hour episode was :confused:990MB until Dec. 6, and 2100MB starting on Dec. 7. December 7 is the date that I got the fall update rolled out to my Tivo's. Various sitcoms were 350- 650MB range before mid-December. Now all my 1/2 hour shows are 2100MB. This is not a big space saving above HD, where a 1/2 hour show in high definition is in the 2600-2900MB range. Since this change has occurred across all networks, I do not think it's a matter of the networks changing the quality/file size of the shows they transmit. And I definitely was getting SD shows recorded in much less space before December.

So I think I am asking for a few things:

1- a way to understand why this change occurred. These channels have been digital all along and I've used cable cards all along

2 - is it possible that Tivo software could reverse this change?

3 - managing my recordings is already taking too much of my time. I have been learning to use VideoRedo more efficiently and do batch managing to remove commercials. I like to save my videos as Tivo files - so that the meta-data is kept - and when I transfer the edited shows back to my Tivo, they group together in the same folder. For those reasons, I want to keep saving my edited files as Tivo files. If I do that, is there an easy way to reduce the file size? I know if I create a DVD (which I haven't done in a couple of years and don't quite remember), I can reduce file quality/size. If there is no way to still record shows with a smaller file size, is there an easy way to change the size later?

I hope my questions are clear. I know there are many on these forums that would not want to record in reduced quality/file size. But I've also seen some who share my concern for conserving space.

Thank you for any input, similar experiences, suggestions, etc.

Lynn.

PS - ultimately, I want to store my videos on a NAS (but still don't want 2GB sitcoms) - that could group series of shows, and show playlists to pull to Tivo. Right now I just got the NAS - don't know how to use it, haven't had time to post here about how to get Tivo recordings on it, etc. But after my next period of work crunch, I may devote more time to this. And that solution might incorporate my desire to keep smaller-sized recordings.

Netflix isn't watchable

Sun, 02/03/2013 - 13:22
Does anyone else have this issue? Netflx is painfully slow to load, the browse screen gets cutoff - but the worst part is the quality of the video.

While I get a perfectly fine video when using either apple tv or connecting my iPad directly to my tv, when watching through TiVo the video is pixelated and unwatchable.

I am using the wireless n adaptor, but even whe I tried a direct connection it wasn't that much improved.

Is this just the way it is or are there suggestions on how to get a better experience?

Series2 Video Input Recording HELP

Sun, 02/03/2013 - 10:28
I have a TIVO subscription at home. However I was using my old S2 box at my office using the video input to record photos and as a security camera backup. It worked fine for nearly 3 years.

A month ago we had power problems and I had to reset/restart everything and go through the Guided Setup. The S2 worked like normal until yesterday. I tried to transfer some photos and I cannot get it to record. When I go to "Find Programs>Record by Time or Channel>Set up Manual Recording" or press the "Record" button nothing happens. I assume that when the Guided Setup was used it changed/updated the operating system.

Is there any rollback or solution?

Premiere4 with James expanded 2tb drive-add ext drive?

Sun, 02/03/2013 - 09:42
I've looked all around and can't find definitive answer for Premieres

If I've upgraded using Jmfs 1.04 my premiere4 int drive to 2tb, can I plug a 1tb external drive in to expand to 3tb total automatically?

Thanks

Watch four tuners at once?

Sun, 02/03/2013 - 06:31
This probably shows a bit of ignorance on my part, but here goes...

In Live TV, could Tivo have a mode where you can see all four tuners on your screen at once, kind of like DirecTV does with their "Mix" channels?

They could label them A, B, C, D and you could use those buttons on the remote - press once to select for trick play and hear the sound, twice for fullscreen.

Is there an engineering reason why they couldn't?

House of Cards S01E13*spoilers* (Netflix)

Sun, 02/03/2013 - 00:20
I enjoyed the series, which is high praise from me since I am not usually a fan of political drama.

The production values were great and I thought the pacing was perfect.

Slugline seems poised to totally screw Frank. Based on the ambition Zoe has shown I expected that she would have much more to gain by staying in Franks pocket than blowing the story wide open, but maybe I am underestimating the value to her career by bringing him down.

Personally I would much rather see frank come out on top with the job.

Stations boardcasting in the wrong aspect ratio for older 4:3 sources

Sat, 02/02/2013 - 20:19
I'm baffled how often I encounter stations that broadcast a 4:3 TV series in a aspect ratio that completely wrong and the image on the HDTV is like watching thin\tall people; looks like a compressed CinemaScope movie.

In the Seattle area channel 117 (RTV) has been broadcasting older 4:3 TV shows in panel box format within a 16:9 1080i HDTV; yes, this a common way of handling TV series that were filmed in 4:3, but Channel 117 compresses that 16:9 panel box image down to 4:3, so the original 4:3 is now a tall\thin image.

To be clear, its not aspect ratio config problem with my HDTV aspect ratio, or a config problem between TV and TiVo. And I can correct the problem by selecting WideScreen on my HDTV when the station comrpesseses the aspect ratio of 4:3 sources, but then the Tivo menus are then expanded to widescreen, and are therefore messed up.

What is baffling is that nobody at the station notices that they are compressing a 16:9 image into a 4:3 when the video source is already 4:3 or a panel box within a 16:9 HDTV format.

C-Span takes over

Sat, 02/02/2013 - 18:33
My Elite will change to C-Span on it's own. I can be watching a live or recorded show and C-Span will appear for about 2 minutes and then live TV will resume. While C-Span is showing all controls are locked. Channel cannot be changed. Even the Tivo button will not work. Over the last few weeks this has increased in frequency. VERY ANNOYING!! Anyone run into this? Any solutions?

installing cisco digital transport adapters

Sat, 02/02/2013 - 18:22
I'm trying to hook up my Cisco DTA 170HD to my Tivo Premier. Have a Sony home theater receiver. Cable provider is Time Warner who's tech support has been no help.

I understand TV coax goes to DTA 'cable in' and Cisco-supplied coax goes from DTA 'to TV' back to Tivo.

This DTA has one HDMI port and that's where I'm confused and so is TWC. How do I link HDMI to Tivo? TV HDMI is routed to receiver and receiver has HDMI tie to Tivo at present.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

channels pixelated

Sat, 02/02/2013 - 17:55
I've got about 20 or so channels that are pixelated (Time Warner), pretty badly, most of them won't stay tuned in for very long, and end up going to a black screen.

I've connected the coax directly to the TiVo (skipping the tuning adaptor, as well as removing the cable card), and the channels come in excellent (aside from the few that can't tune, due to no cable card being present).

Once I re-connect the TA the channels still work fine, however when I put the cable card back in, they start to go all wonky (digitized, sound like robots talking, etc).

I'm guessing this has to be (or could be?) something related to the cable card, since the channels work fine, up until I put the cable card back in.

The signals on the channels are all erratic and go from 0-24-70 and anything in between - all other channels work flawlessly. It's channels in the "lower" range of channels, starting at 33, all the way up to 502 (certain channels in this range work, so its not a very large number of channels), but it is for example SpikeTV (which is on 36, as well as 216). The HD channel (1216) of SpikeTV works fine, but the other 2 "alternative" channels of it, are all digitized.

I'm trying to get an idea of what it may be, before calling Time Warner, since they don't seem to have very many folks familiar with TiVo's in my area, and if it ultimately could be the cable card (again, I have no idea, since I'm pretty new to all of this), then I can just go get another one (provided it doesn't fail the firmware update, as the last two we tried did, so we ended up going back to the one that was working previously, but has/had the issue with these 20 or so channels).

So, any ideas, or suggestions of what I can say, or try?

Thank you.

"This program was not recorded because it was no longer in the program guide."

Sat, 02/02/2013 - 17:44
A couple weeks ago, I added a season pass for The Joe Schmo Show. It recorded the first show successfully, but I decided to let it queue up several episodes before watching it.

Today, I decided to watch them. Unfortunately, I still have only that first recorded episode. My recording history does list the subsequent episodes, but it lists them as Not Recorded with the following reason:

"This program was not recorded because it was no longer in the program guide."

What happened here? This was on Spike TV. There have been no lineup changes related to this channel. Unfortunately, the episodes are not scheduled to re-air so I've blown the season.

Bringing up the season pass shows two episodes scheduled to record in the next couple weeks (with the double checkmark), but so did the ones that didn't record. I guess I'll wait and see what happens with them.

Problem with premium channels & Tivo Premiere w/cablecard

Sat, 02/02/2013 - 17:14
I have the tivo premiere using the comcast cablecard. The tivo is just a couple of months old. All channels work fine except HBO and Showtime and I get a "not authorized to receive this channel" on the screen.

I have had comcast tech out and they have tried a few other cablecard they are telling me there is a problem with my tivo. Again all other channels work find except the two premium channels which I have confirmed with comcast I should be receiving.

Suggestions?
