Scan for non-authorized channels

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 19:58
Comcast keeps adding channels in specialty packages (sports, etc). These are all things that I need an extra subscription to watch. Instead of just always adding new channels that appear when there is a lineup change, couldn't you check and see if it is an authorized channel first, and not add it if it isn't authorized.

Lacking that, how about a menu entry I could select to scan channels in the list and automatically remove any that claim to be non-authorized.

Person of Interest - The Crossing - S03E09 - 11/19/12

Saw that coming from too far away. Sad to see Detective Carter go but except for a big loose end, it looks like the HR story is done.

Almost Human - Skin - S01E02 - OAD 11/18/13

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 19:21
No thread yet? As much as I enjoyed the first episode, I really liked this one even more. There were some really great moments. I'm going to enjoy this series. SP is definitely secure. Benedict Android, the leg stabbing, the online dating, the balls-scanning - loved it all. Also loved the continued nods to Blade Runner (there were many), and the future tech was great: the FlashMasks (or whatever they were called), the license plate scrambler, and the DNA bomb were all very cool.

I do note, with a little apprehension, that although this was the second episode to air, and was billed as part 2 of a two part series premiere, that it appears that this was actually episode 5. Not sure if that's just a production number versus an episode number, or if FOX is airing them out of order, or what's going on...

Fall 2013 Update Problem

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 17:39
Ever since my two Series 4 Tivo's received the Fall Software Update on Nov. 16,they fail to connect to the network with "connection interrupted". "Test Internet Connection" works ok. My Series 3 Tivo works ok as does my Roku device. Anyone else with the same problem? Someone have a solution?

Sound hiccup when entering TiVo menu?

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 17:11
Hi all,

Loving the Roamio and TiVo in general so far.

I noticed that when I push the TiVo button the sound briefly stops while the display changes. When I push Guide or Live TV the same things happens; however when I'm watching Live TV and I push guide it's a smooth transition. It's just going in and coming out of the TiVo menu that the sound stops for a second or two. Is there something I can do to fix this or is it just how it is? This is on a Roamio Pro.

Thanks!

Netflix ditches Webkit/HTML5. Goes native in new UI

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 15:37
Netflix's new HTML5 based UI for TiVo might have a short lifespan! :)

Netflix ditches Webkit to roll out slick new UI for smart TVs, Roku boxes and game consoles

SUMMARY: Netflix is bringing a completely revamped UI to smart TVs and connected devices – and it moved away from Webkit and HTML5 to bring the same features to less powerful devices.

Quote: Netflix rolled out a big revamp of its user interface for smart TVs and connected devices [last] Tuesday night, moving away from a grid of box shot covers towards a much more visual interface that features large still images and more details on each show or movie.

The new UI will be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 as well as Roku 3 devices and newer smart TVs and Blu-ray players (2013 and 2014 models) to Netflix members worldwide in the next two weeks. Other devices, including some older Roku players, will receive the update over the coming months. There are no plans to bring the new UI to Apple TV and Xbox One.
The new native UI showed up on my Roku 3 last night and not only looks amazing but is now feature-parity with my PS3 (profiles and autoplay).
Quote: This new UI is Netflix’s biggest revamp of its TV interface thus far, in part because of a lot of the underlying plumbing. Previously, Netflix was building its TV app user interface in HTML5, which allowed the company to quickly iterate on minor changes and A/B-test various features with a subset of its subscribers.

But in order to make HTML5 work, Netflix actually shipped a stripped-down version of the Webkit browser as part of its app, which in turn meant that it had fewer resources left to add features. The result was that it had to tweak its app for each platform, and leave out some features on cheaper and less powerful devices — which is why Roku boxes for example never had access to individual profiles.

With the new UI, all of this changes. Netflix decided to ditch Webkit as a rendering engine and instead build a native platform for the most common connected device chipsets out there, circumventing the various smart TV SDKs in the process. The company even decided to develop its own voice recognition technology to make voice input consistent across platforms, and not have the Xbox implementation differ from implementations on smart TVs that come with support for voice input. Quote: Netflix started working on this new platform 18 months ago, and secretly tested it in people’s living rooms for months: The company started migrating PS3 users away from Webkit and to the new architecture with an update in the spring — but it’s unlikely anyone noticed, because the Netflix team rebuilt the old UI on top of the new platform. In addition, it tested the new user interface with several hundred thousand new subscribers on the PS3.

Netflix has traditionally tested some of its more advanced features on the PS3 first. But with the new platform, it will now bring feature-parity to all devices, and for example allow Roku users to finally use profiles and autoplay to quickly fire up a new TV show episode after ending another. http://gigaom.com/2013/11/12/netflix...game-consoles/

More detailed HLS statistics

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 12:43
Today I was testing OOH downloads @ medium quality and monitoring things closely (now that OOH download pausing issue is fixed). Here's some interesting statistics:

Final stats for a 1 hour show downloaded at medium quality (source was a 720p recording from ABCHD):
File size = 648MB
Total # HLS segments: 1829

=>363KB per segment
=> ~ 2 seconds of video per segment

I was surprised to see the 2 seconds per segment number as I expected it to be higher (around 10 seconds or so). I haven't analyzed Basic and High quality downloads to see if they also adhere to the 2 seconds of video per segment rate, but will do so eventually.

Roamio Channel Limitation?

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 12:25
When I mentioned to the office manager at the local Cable One office that I had a new Roamio on the way, I was told "The Roamio will only get channels 2-56 in a cable system with Digital Simulcast, which we do not yet offer in Page. We’ve just recently learned of this new development with TiVo. I was told, by a customer, that TiVo doesn’t mention this in their product description of the Roamio."

It doesn't make sense to me. They don't yet offer Digital Simulcast but the Roamio will only get 2-56 if they did?

Any idea what she was trying to tell me?

Slingbox 500 and Roamio pro? Any reason for both?

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 11:28
Is there any reason to have both the sling box 500 and the roamio pro?

Thanks in advance for the insight.

Number of Simultaneous Recordings on FIOS?

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 11:19
Hi,

I'm new here. About to get a Roamio Pro, but I have a quick question (apologies if it's been answered, but I couldn't find anything from searching):

I read that Cable Cos are only required to provide the same functionality on CableCards that they offer on their own equipment. So, Verizon currently only offers 2 tuner DVRs. Does this mean I'll be limited to 2 on the Roamio?

Thanks for any help/advice. I already found a great thread here on what kind of CableCard to get and I know that it must be activated AND paired to make all channels work. I'm ready to jump into TiVo!

Suggestion for Sticky

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 11:16
Can we please make a sticky with the most up-to-date prices on Roamio deals? I feel like the actual deals are getting buried and that this would help cut down on duplicate posts regarding the same information.

Example: Roamio Plus ($339 shipped from ABT, possibly no tax)
Lifetime MSD service with code PLSR $399

30 second skip code not working

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 10:50
The first thing I always do on a new tivo is enable the back door 30 second skip to replace the 30 second scan behavior. It doesn't seem to work on the mini. Is there a new code or way to do it. Minor annoyance but would be nice to have.

Updated iOS app brings back log in problem

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 10:25
Well....TiVo in its infinite wisdom upgraded their iOS app (v. 3.2.2) today to address "stability" issues, and it's brought back the log in problems we had afew months ago. Nice job TiVo...

Looking for Parts: Toshiba SD-H400 Tivo

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 05:42
Does anyone have a dead or unused Toshiba SD-H400 in their possession? I'm looking for a replacement circuit board from the front panel.

Series 3 OLED loses Roamio on MRV Now Playing List

Tue, 11/19/2013 - 01:58
Hello all.

I have a Series 3 OLED connected to an Xfinity router via TiVo's wireless G USB Wifi adapter (I've also had it connected with TiVo's wireless N adapter with same results). I have a Roamio Plus connected to the same Xfinity router via ethernet.

The Series 3 initially sees the Roamio on the MRV Now Playing List after rebooting the Series 3, but after 5 minutes or so, the Roamio disappears from the now playing list.

I'm able to transfer shows in their entirety from the Roamio to the Series 3 if I catch the Roamio on the Now Playing List after rebooting. The transfer continues even after the Roamio disappears off the Now Playing List.

The Roamio can always see and transfer shows from the Series 3, even when the Series 3 can't see the Roamio.

The Series 3 can see TiVo Desktop server and pyTiVo without problems. I'm able to transfer shows from both units using kmttg without problems.

Multi-room viewing is enabled on all my TiVos with "a,a,a,a" and "a,a,a" displaying on the TiVoToGo field on the system information screen for the Roamio and Series 3 respectively.

I've had two Series 3 OLED previously, with the same router setup and they saw each other without issue.

I activated the Roamio just over a month ago, and I hoped with subsequent service updates that this problem would be solved, but to date this problem persists.

Does anyone else have a similar problem and any thoughts on what is causing this?

Thanks.

2-Tuner Premiers for Sale - Brand New in Box

Mon, 11/18/2013 - 23:58
I have (3) 2-tuner Premiers 320GB units still in their factory sealed boxes. I had bought these for the inlaws, but they decided to go another route. I got them when Best Buy was clearing them out - I will let them go for $65 shipped (basically my cost plus shipping). They've never been turned on as the boxes are still sealed.

Fall 2013 Update: Losing HDMI signal?

Mon, 11/18/2013 - 23:06
I finally received the Fall 2013 Update on my Premiere; I was not signed-up for the early release. Everything seemed fine but now I lose the HDMI signal between uses! When it happens I try temporarily disconnecting the HDMI cable but that doesn't help. I also tried pressing the 'Format' button on the front panel; no go. The only thing that recovers the signal is to pull the power-cord, then cold boot.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Once I power-cycle it works fine. I watch TV for an hour or two, then turn the TV and receiver off. Next time I return -- no signal.

Is it possible the Update is messing with the HDMI output when the 'upstream' devices (my Denon receiver and Samsung TV) are turned off?

Android Mobile App not on Amazon?

Mon, 11/18/2013 - 23:01
Is the Android mobile app only on the Google Play store? How can I load that on a Kindle Fire (without rooting it)?

Why haven't they put it on Amazon's Android store?

Problem connecting - anyway to fix?

Mon, 11/18/2013 - 22:28
On a trip and using then stream in my hotel room... It was really working pretty well. Watched a whole show and the quality was great! Very usable...

Started watching the new Fast and Loud, watched for a little while and the picture froze.

Now I get a dialog telling me that there is a problem connecting to the stream device.

Asks me if I want to fix - of course that can't be done away from the network.

Does this mean I am done for the week? I know it's new, but I really hope TiVo improves the error handling on the OOH streaming. Kind of a waste that's the system is now bricked and it only Monday of a full week trip!

OOH via mifi device?

Mon, 11/18/2013 - 20:26
Have done all necessary updates and have latest versions of all software on my iPhone, Tivo Stream and Tivo Premier. Have done Streaming Setup OK with "setup out of home streaming" checked and it went fine. Can stream and download fine on home wifi network to iPhone.

Should I expect this to also work with my iPhone when out of the house using a mifi device? Both watch and download are greyed out in that case.
From the Tivo iPhone app's perspective it's still wifi, unless either it or the Tivo video proxy servers are doing a tracert and detecting mobile networks in between the two of them.

I read this thread but it's not exactly the same question:

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...d.php?t=510696

Have raised a case with Tivo Support but it's not clear whether they understand what I am asking and we have been back and forth a couple times.

Thanks
