And it's dead...

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 14:58
Ugh, the Pro I got on Tuesday is now basically dead...

Starting this afternoon, it started glitching big time when playing back programs. The video (on shows I know were recorded perfectly) would pixelate, and the sound (to the TV, no A/V equipment here) would drop out for more than it would play.

The TiVo Central UI was also super slow to navigate through. You'd press a button, see the orange circle on the front of the TiVo light up immediately, and then it'd be 10-20 seconds before the TiVo would respond to it.

Rebooting, it stays on the first boot screen for about 5 minutes, and stays on the "Almost there..." screen for literally 30-40 minutes.

When it finally gets back to TiVo Central, it displays the same symptoms above.

TiVo tech support were basically "yeah, that's bad, take it back to Best Buy". Best Buy is out of stock, so I guess my choices are wait for them, or use the $40 TiVo Extended warranty that I got on Tuesday and let TiVo replace it (which consumes the extended warranty).

Yay for being an early adopter.

Remote RF Question

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 14:56
So lets say you have 2 Roamio Plus/Pros...each in a different room but the rooms are very close...will the remotes conflict and control each or do they each use their own "frequency/address/whatever" so it will only work for the one it came with?

Streaming and downloading with a Roamio

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 14:41
I don't have an IPhone and I don't have an IPad. I have no intention of getting either. My family and I all use Windows 8, Windows RT (Surface) and Windows Phone 8 devices. No, I don't want to get into a big debate over that (it gets old :)) but I do have a question.

So, what options exist - today or "soon" - for me to watch content "off box" namely, to stream from the Roamio on my home network, to download and watch (the on-a-plane scenario) or to stream over the Internet.

My understanding is that today I can't even watch from my PC on my home network, but I'm not sure (I seem to recall some PC app that supported this but don't know if that's still available).

Anyway, as someone who just upgraded from an HD to a Roamio I am educating myself afresh to what Tivo supports. Anything I should know about?

Thanks.

Mark

External Hard Drives?

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 14:25
How is the experience with using one with the TiVo? Do the files load off them seamlessly or is it a worse experience?

I don't think my tuning adapter is working

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 14:16
I decided to buy a Roamio last night (first TiVo box!). We got the basic model as we were wavering back and forth on whether or not the features coming with the doubled price were anything we were ever likely to need or use more than once in a blue moon. When we got to Best Buy only the basics were in stock. Decision made!

I thought it would be a headache to get this going with Time Warner (its a headache to get them to take care of their own stuff, let alone a third party issue!), but I built up an expectation of such a negative experience that the bad experience I did get seemed fine. I spent an hour and a half dealing with busy signals, ringing forever, and getting dropped from TWC's menu system before I finally got through to a person. All that to be told to go down to the local office. So I did that and met a very visibly annoyed woman (lots of big sighs and eye rolling) and admitted she had never done this before. After slowly going through her computer for a half hour and making two poor souls trying to pay a bill wait, she finally produced a card and a cisco tuning adapter.

I got it all hooked up and I love what is working, but I am missing some channels and when I try to test the tuning adapter channels (as opposed to the option to test the cable card channels in the settings) I come up blank. I tried unplugging the adapter and plugging it back in, but no dice. Any suggestions?

Question for Tivo reps here - shouldn't Comcast at least know? :)

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 14:13
This is a Tivo question because I can go to the Tivo site, enter my zip code and be told specifically that XFinity On Demand is supported in my location., from here: http://www.tivo.com/discover/cable

That information - from Tivo - was a significant factor in my decision to purchase a Roamio.

So, with that said, a question...

I had an issue with XFinity On Demand. Two long phone calls to Comcast didn't resolve the problem. OK, stuff happens - so Comcast offered a technician to come out. To be fair, they arranged this quickly and with a small window (8am - 10am). I appreciated that.

Then it got interesting. The FIRST thing out the mouth of the technician was that On Demand wouldn't work without a cable box. I obviously pushed back. What was concerning was that not had he never heard of a Roamio - he hadn't heard that ANY Tivo worked with XFinity On Demand. He's been a technician at Comcast for two years.

I urged him to call second tier support. He ended up speaking to three folks (separate calls, each a minimum of 15 minutes). All of them started the conversation by saying it wasn't supported - I needed a Premier to get this working. One guy had a pretty bad tone ("Don't tell me how to do my job") and it was far from a pleasant experience.

Initially they made it worse. I had XFinity On Demand show up since I plugged in my Roamio two days ago but it froze when I played content. They pretty quickly changed their configuration to a Premium (for my Tivo) and the On Demand option went away completely. That's when they piled on even more and went down the "Not our problem - speak to Tivo" path.

I was just about to start to get angry - when it showed up AND worked again. They verbally patted each other on the back and now I have ON Demand.

But...

This was a REALLY bad experience. Yes, I'm kind of kidding with the Tivo Rep thing but I am kind of curious how much level of awareness and expertize Tivo demands of Comcast that allows Tivo to exclaim "it works"? I'd really be interested in Tivo's thoughts on my experience - and whether it is acceptable that a partner is sending out technicians who have no idea about On Demand support (even in older model).

Thanks for listening.

Wakeup issues with HDMI

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 14:00
I've noticed an odd problem with my Basic's HDMI handshaking. If my television is off when I wake the Roamio from standby, when I turn on the television the Roamio will not display video. The television says "no signal". If I turn on the television first video is displayed normally. This problem does not occur with my HD.

The Glades has been canceled.

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 13:39
http://www.deadline.com/2013/08/glades-cancelled-amc/

It ended with a cliffhanger as well.

I was still watching but it was entirely to formulaic. Random people find murder victim. There are three suspects to the murder. Lead character moves from one suspect to another accusing them of the murder as new evidence is revealed. The final piece of evidence is revealed wherein the actual murderer confesses to the crime. Throw in a few minutes about his personal life and you have yourselves an episode. I won't miss it too much.

Are Roamios ready for the Future IP based authentication

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 13:38
I have read several times that the FCC would like to move away from CableCards and require the cable companies to implement Residential IP Gateways.

We know this has been pushed back several times and we really have no idea when or even what the final product might look like when it finally comes out - but it did get me thinking.

Since something like a Residential IP Gateway is software authentication - is there any reason that the Roamio line WOULDN'T be able to support IP authentication?

Tivo Outlet still selling Primere devices

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 13:33
I thought as everyone else did that the Premiere had faded away. That is not true at all. From TiVo.com (Shopping) and then at the far right corner is Outlets.

https://tivo.com/shop/outlet

Are these the same prices when the product launched or as any of the pricing come down? Then again Tivo "should" reduce pricing or include a 6 to 12 month free service with 3yr commit at 15.95 a month.

Guide not updating

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 13:18
I added channels I receive on my new Roamio Plus using my cable lineup card, and I get them live just fine. But the tivo guide just says TBA for all the channels and all slots. I forced a network update, and nothing happened. I have now wait 3 days for the guide to populate and still nothing.

What gives?

New to TiVo: Roamio vs. Premiere XL4

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 13:09
I'm finally ditching my cable co's DVR and moving to tivo. As a new user, is it worth the extra $$ to get a new Roamio over a premiere xl4? I would be looking to get a lifetime subscription, so the difference seems to be around 300 btwn the 2.

TiVo Dumps Me on Chan 3 Comcast Houston

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 11:44
This is very odd.

I recorded The Office last night, The Return. Part way thru, TiVo dumped me on channel 3 with an EAS test and stopped responding to the remote except for the yellow circle flash on the panel. Eventually I got back control after 15 min or so.

I tried watching the recording again. Same thing - but w/o the EAS. I rebooted.

Then I tried watching the same episode on Netflix. And it happened there too (no EAS).

Update.

TiVo support is saying this is happening on Comcast all over Texas.

This looks like may be a cable card issue where garbage is being sent by Comcast, sometimes garbage looks like CC commands and TiVos don't know how to handle.

newbie questions

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 10:58
Well, I'm not exactly a noobie but I don't keep up with this stuff like you guys, so...

1. I see that Weaknees is selling the plus for 349.95. Is that a good price? Is Weaknees THE place to buy TiVo stuff from?

2. I have the Premier Model TCD746320 - there's no other model info on the set. Is this all I need to know to sell it? It hasn't been modified.

3. Will my Premier remote work with the Roamio?

4. Do all cables come with a new purchase? If not, what else do I need?

Thanks.

Mini access Roamio tuner but NOT recordings?

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 10:43
Does anybody know if I can set up a Mini to borrow a tuner (or two) from a Roamio Plus or Pro without also giving access to the stored programs on the Roamio?

I want to dump the expensive cable box in a guest bedroom, but I'm not sure I want my guests going through all the shows on the Roamio, especially if they can be accidentally deleted from the Mini.

Alternately, is there yet any means to restrict the Mini's access to the Roamio's shows? (Read-only, parental controls, or anything?)

(I haven't yet bought either device yet, but I'm just trying to get all my ducks in a row.)

Live TV button

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 09:48
Does the Live TV button not allocate a tuner? Just got my Mini and Roamio Plus yesterday and noticed after waking up the Mini the Live TV button results in a black screen. If I go to the guide, I get a tuner allocated and then I think Live TV works.

Two questions -Adding memory and % bar

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 09:47
Not sure where to ask this or if it's possible, but I was wondering about adding more memory to my premiere. By that I mean more storage - for regular and for HD. I know people have done it for the Series 2's - I have one that I got from TCF that had it added. Could someone give me a link to a thread where this is discussed?

I was also wondering about the % bar on My Shows. I have about 75 in "deleted show" section because the one I have was bought used and I deleted most all of the old stuff (did find some old Quantum Leaps I was happy to see). Anyway, the % bar shows at 22% and then after a weeks worth of stuff I record it goes to like 26%. It hit 33% last week and I went into the deleted show section and "permanently deleted" a bunch of stuff but that was a pain.

Some of the reason is HD. I am recording more shows in HD now then I ever did before. I changed my cable plan and get more channels. I guess I wonder do I need to worry that much about the storage and if so when do I start?

Roamio Plus back at Amazon

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 09:05
Seems that Roamio Plus's are back at Amazon w/ a 1 - 2 day extra processing timeframe on them.

And Roamio Pros are instock.

Does the Stream support parental controls?

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 08:33
I just purchased a Roamio Pro, which basically has a Stream built into it. I'd like to put the software on my kids iPads, but I can't do it if it will give them the unchecked ability to watch whatever they want, including live TV. I'm wondering if the Stream will recognize the existing parental control settings on the various TiVos throughout my home.

Have to call TWC every time i reboot?

Fri, 08/30/2013 - 07:29
So got my tivo box last night, had TWC help program it. Worked then i tried a HD channel which caused tons of static and froze my screen.

So i rebooted the device and channels weren't working, so i called TWC and i now had 0 emm count. The tech on the phone says whenever you restart a tivo it will auto go to 0 and you have to call each time to have it fixed?
