Roamio Wi-Fi

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 12:27
Why in the world didn’t TiVo use 802.11ac wi-fi in Roamio? I am updating all of my Apple toys to the new standard. I asked TiVo chat and they were ho-hum, 802.11n works fine. So does my 1964 Pontiac.

Roamio OTA reception?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 12:03
I know the TivoHD had great OTA reception (so I've read) and the Premiere models did not. I'm interested in any experience early adopters have comparing OTA reception to previous Tivo models.

Roamio features that will (apparently) make their way to Premieres

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 11:45
Going through the FAQs here, I see:

(highlighting added by me.)

"Functionality is exactly the same," eh? So does this mean a 2-Tuner Premiere, along with a TiVo Stream (both of which I have,) will eventually allow me to do streaming away from home as well? Fingers crossed.

I also note this, and the curious wording:

That the note specifically mentions both TiVo Premiere as well as Premiere 4 Tuner makes me think that perhaps, now with dynamic tuner allocation, that a 2-Tuner Premiere might be able to connect to a TiVo Mini. Yes, I realize that they may be talking about one Premiere doing Multi-Room Streaming with another Premiere. But that this FAQ doesn't specifically note that a 4-Tuner Premiere is required to work with a Mini, makes me wonder, hopefully, if that is no longer a valid requirement.

Oh TiVo, please, don't screw this up for us. We've been disappointed for too long and I'm not going to buy a whole new TiVo (and deal with failing at transferring over my library of recordings) just to get features we should have had from the start.

Thanks Dave!

This is a fantastic deal, should quell any complaints from users who wanted integrated Stream support on the base Roamio model.

Power button?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 11:10
I see the Roamio has broken with tradition and actually has a power button.

Anyone know what it actually does?

Does it put it in standby?

Does it just tell it that no one is watching so it will know it is OK to switch tuners?

Actually turn it completely off? (Probably not that since it still takes forever to boot).

Roamio / Android

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 11:08
Still no Android support? Is this some kind of joke?

Seriously?

What's the excuse now?

Where is DTA for the Mini? That was "coming soon" too.

Until these guys can enable the DTA on the Mini and offer Android support, I'm not buying another thing from these people.

Mrs. Schmidt can you hear us?

The Roamio total cost of ownership vs ?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 11:00
There seems to be a lot of discussion about the total cost of ownership of a TiVo vs the competition in the Roamio thread, so I wanted to start a dedicated thread, kicking off with a three year cost comparison of FiOS TV for three rooms -- who really wants to keep any DVR for more than 3 years? Not me.

The FiOS MRV DVR is $20 per month and each extra STB is $13. So that comes out to $1584 for three years, with nothing to sell at the end.
20+12+12=44/mo * 36 = $1584

A TiVo Roamio Plus with two Minis with lifetime service, and CableCARD rental for three years
400+500+100+150+100+150=1400+5*36=1580.

Seems like the same, right? Except that at the end of the three years I can sell my old TiVo stuff. Assuming I get 60% of my investment back, which is based on the current resale value of a TiVo Premiere on eBay at ~$400.

This means the TiVo Roamio will be $840 cheaper than the FiOS MRV DVR after three years.

Upgrade?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 10:59
So, the big question out there for me - is there going to be any kind of upgrade path from Premier-generation gear to Roamio, like they did when Premier was launched?

Margret Schmidt (TiVoMargret or @tivodesign) is looking into it:

Is this website going to add a new "Roamio" forum?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 10:57
That would be really, really nice :)

Also, it would be nice if the existing threads about roamio could be moved into the new roamio forum!

Thanks,

TC

Which TiVo Roamio Should I Get?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 10:57
I am deciding between the Roamio and Roamio Plus, and would go with a multi-service lifetime subscription.

As far as resale value goes, and looking forward, would it be better to get the Roamio Plus that lacks OTA support? I have digital cable, but there is a possibility that I will "cut the cord" at some point in the future before breaking even on this unit.

The built-in streaming and MoCa functionality are tempting with the Pro, but I can add those to the entry level model for an additional cost.

Any feedback or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

TiVo Premiere XL with 2TB drive, Lifetime Service, & Stream!

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 10:49
I'm replacing one my Premieres with a Roamio. This one's a Premiere XL that has been upgraded with a 2TB drive and has lifetime service. I'm also including a TiVo Stream as a package deal. I'm asking $450 for both, and I'll pay for ground shipping to the lower 48. Let me know if anyone has any interest.

Tivo Steam Software Upgrade to enable External Streaming on Premier?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 10:01
I have read a bunch of reviews on the new Roamio and am confused on the ability of the existing Stream to be updated (with future software) to enable external streaming when used with an existing Premier unit.

I know the Stream can be used with the entry level Roamio hardware (with the high end ones having it built in) and seen conflicting/unclear reviews if this "sling box-like" functionality will come to Premier units that have the Stream.

Anyone find an article or review that clears this up? I know the functionality was "coming soon" so the answer may not be out yet...

Weeds - Anyone a fan?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 09:59
Was bored last night as I finally caught up on my stuff and looked through Netflix and came across this show. I had heard good things. I watched the pilot and it was very meh. Does it get better or is just more of the same?

RF Control standards?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 09:48
So, the new TiVo has an RF remote? Are there any RF standards? Any universal remotes that know how to talk the RF protocols? Or is this all completely proprietary?

Tivo, what are you doing, No HDMI-CEC?????

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 08:34
Tivo,

This is a letter to know what is going on. Your new devices you just announced are great! Offering up to 3TB of storage, up to 6 tuners, updated software, better internals, wifi built-in, and an updated design. At the end of the day I have to ask, what were you thinking not including HDMI-CEC support? Sure leave it off the base model, toss around the idea for the Plus, but it has to be apart of your Pro line. After all its a Pro level feature right. So why did you leave it off? Some of us use and want this functionality, functionality that is available in much cheaper and inferior product. So can you explain why you left it out?

I would really like to know as I'm debating about picking up the new X1 box from Comcast and moving on from Tivo. I've had four Tivo units now. My first one was in 2003 and have had seen your company grow. Each new model you release you leave something off. Something that should be current generation. Leaving us always wanting.

I am being honest, could you please let us know why you decided to make this poor decision? We would all very much like to know.

respectfully a long time customer,
Michael

The TiVo Roamio DVR Series includes three models: TiVo Roamio ($199.99), TiVo Roamio Plus ($399.99) and TiVo Roamio Pro ($599.99). Roamio features four or six tuners and unprecedented storage (ranging from 75 hours to 450 hours of HD content). It ensures subscribers never miss a show again and have plenty of space for recordings. The improved speed and performance of TiVo Roamio also includes integrated wireless and TiVo Stream functionality in certain models.

With the Roamio family of products, along with TiVo Mini, customers can replace their DVR and associated monthly fees and even save money every month with TiVo Roamio or a whole-home TiVo solution.

Product features include:

-- Coming very soon, out-of-home streaming will allow subscribers to stream TV and recorded shows to your iPad(R) or iPhone(R). The built-in TiVo Stream feature allows users to connect to their Roamio over Wi-Fi and watch recordings and cable channels almost ANYWHERE.**

-- An improved remote will boast an RF connection, allowing Roamio to be placed behind closed cabinets or in another room altogether -- no line of sight is needed to operate your TiVo. Still, the remote retains the capability of learning commands to control all of your other equipment, allowing for the true one-remote solution.
-- Anywhere you have an Internet connection, you have the ability to manage your DVR with your phone or tablet. The updated free TiVo mobile app available for tablets and smartphones (iOS and Android(TM)) offers remote Season Pass(R) management, a recording scheduler that allows you to add or remove recordings and enhanced WishList(R) management.
-- TiVo Mini software has been updated to include Netflix and "dynamic tuning" to maximize the value of Roamio's capacity. This feature allows all of Roamio's tuners to be used for recording when they aren't actually streaming content to another screen. It's the ultimate whole-home DVR experience.

Html5

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 06:59
well this begs the question... will they port the html 5 interface down to the premiere and would it do anything?

Roamio launches, what about stream?

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 06:34
First it will have stream built in, so no longer will an extra box be required.

Second, that internal stream function will allegedly allow you to download shows remotely with a software update later this year.

So, that begs some important questions:

1. If you buy a roamio, will you still need a stram for other tivos on your network. My guess is that you will still need a stream for non-roamio devices

2. Will the download outside of your network functionality work with stream with that software update? My guess is no, but there is a possibility....

Oh, and still no mention of android support. That is becoming an embarrassment at this point.

cox omaha (SDV) -- periodic reboot to regain premium channels

Tue, 08/20/2013 - 02:34
So...a relative uses a Tivo Premiere (2 tuners) with Cox basic cable and an HBO package (handful of HBO channels).

This all worked great until the advent of SDV in Omaha. After installing the tuning adapter (2 months ago), she's twice lost channels. The first time everything locked up and she required help from Cox to resync the adapter, plus a Tivo reboot. My sister-in-law asked Cox tech support, "What caused this problem?" Tech support responded, "No one knows...it just randomly does not work."

Several days ago she lost just the HBO channels. Before calling Cox, I suggested that she reboot Tivo to see if the HBO channels could be "recovered". That did the trick.

But this is not looking very promising. Is this her future? I.E., periodically rebooting Tivo to coexist with SDV?

Thanks in advance for your insights.
