Upgrading a series 5 Roamio

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 18:35
I'd like to know which drive is the best one to use for upgrading the Roamio, WD30EURS or WD30EURX or any other, just looking for the BEST.
Also can a 4TB drive be used instead?

New WD HDD For Backup Purposes

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 16:17
Just bought a WD5000AVDS HDD. I want it as a secure backup in case my 1tb HDD fails.

I currently have a WD10EURX HDD in my Tivo HD (652160).

I want to use WinMFS Mfscopy and copy the entire 1tb HDD to the new 500gb HDD. Only have about 250gb of data on the 1tb now.

Do I need to first "Delete Format" the new HDD? Or will WinMFS take care of any format information that may be on the new one?

I understand that some new HDDs come already formatted for Windows.

Hope I've included enough information.

New Roamio - drive upgrade timing?

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 15:15
Hey all. I just took delivery of my Basic Roamio and 2 Tivo Minis. I have a 2TB drive scheduled for deliver tomorrow. Should I wait until I upgrade the drive to get everything up and running, or can I play with my new toys now? I realize any recording will disappear, but if I activate the units today, can I upgrade tomorrow or later without issue?

Sorry for the dumb question, but it's hard to just leave everything sit here for a day or more.

Tivo roamio and readyNAS

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 15:14
Hello. This is my first post

I was wondering is there a way to make my nas drive add more storage to my tivo w/o looking like a seperate storage device on the tivo user interface?

My dream would be for the tivo to use my readyNAS for storage

Roamio data useage?

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 15:08
If I understand correctly, the Roamio is somewhat of a cloud DVR. Being that it is in constant connection with the Tivo mothership.
Does anyone know how much data the Roamio uses to talk to the Tivo "Mothership" in a 24 hour period?
My Apple Airport Extreme router does not allow me to track network traffic.
My data usage for the month of December has increased considerably since activating my Roamio.

Tivo HD TCD652160 Stuck on Powering Up - Swapped PS and HDD

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 13:58
I have a Tivo HD (TCD652160) with lifetime service that I was planning to give to my father who lives on the east coast. I shipped it to him and it initially worked, but after a day or two it was getting stuck on "Welcome! Powering Up" and continually rebooting. I tried a known good hard drive and that didn't fix the issue. Thinking it was probably a bad power supply, I purchased a second inexpensive Tivo HD off Craigslist that works fine but lacks lifetime service so that I could poach its power supply to use in the first unit.

I had the first unit shipped back to me on the west coast and before replacing anything I plugged it in and it unexpectedly worked fine. Unfortunately, it's reverted to the "Welcome! Powering Up" loop since that first boot up. I opened up the first Tivo HD and its power supply appeared to have one slightly bulging capacitor so I went ahead and swapped power supplies. The first unit continued to be stuck in the "Welcome! Powering Up" loop and the 2nd unit continued to work fine with the presumed bad power supply. So I went ahead and swapped hard drives but the problem continued in the first unit. The only thing plugged into the back was the power cord and the HDMI cable. The same power cord works fine on the 2nd unit. I tried removing the HDMI cable and plugging in composite video instead but the problem continued. There are no cable cards, external drives or network adapters/cables connected.

Are there any other options I can try? Is there anything I can easily test with a multimeter that might narrow down the problem?

moca filter question

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 13:06
I have a moca filter (POE filter) installed between my 3 way splitter and outside cable.
I bought two moca filters though.

Can I or should I put the other moca filter between my cable modem and the splitter as well? Would it help or possibly hurt anything?

Tivo Stream stopped working

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 12:54
I had not used streaming to my iPhone in a couple of weeks and just tried to stream from my iPhone and it doesn't work anymore. It says "Streaming Device Not Found."
The box is locked away on a wiring closet so that I don't have to hear the loud fan noise. So, it is quite inconvenient to access it. I certainly would not want to have to go reset it every couple of weeks. Is this common that it is needs to be reset every 2 weeks or so?
Is there any remote access to it either through the Tivo Roamio or a web interface so I can try restarting it without physically unplugging it from power?
Is there anything else I can do from the Tivo in case it lost its connection to the Tivo Stream from the Roamio side?
I have also seen reliability issues with the Tivo Mini despite using wired Ethernet and sound issues with the Roamio requiring restarting the Tivo to get it working again more than once in a month.

I got the Roamio, plus Tivo Mini, plus Tivo Stream because I thought it would be much easier to deal with than a PC, but so far it is not. I have had them for a few days past 30 days now so it is too late to return them (I purchased on Thanksgiving). Very frustrating.

I now see that a quiet, and compact home theater PC running Windows 7 Home Premium plus a couple of the newer XB0X 360s as extenders probably would not been any more difficult to deal with and probably would be easier since I am familiar with configuring and troubleshooting that type of equipment.

Dear Tivo Abby: please help me decide - Roamio or Roamio Plus

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 11:41
My situation:
  • Comcast subscriber
  • Not all that thrilled with what I'm paying for... might consider cord cutting at some point in the future
  • Premiere XL w/1 TB expander and lifetime
  • Spare 3TB hard drive sitting around
  • Two TVs connected to the Premiere XL, one in one room on Component and one in the other room on HDMI
  • IR remote in the same room as the Premiere, Original Tivo Slide in the next room
  • Have Tivo stream
  • Have two Tivo lifetime minis
  • Have HDCP compliant HDMI splitter if I need to use it.

If I were to upgrade to the Roamio, I would get the flexibility of OTA and save $150.

If I were to upgrade to the Plus, I would get two more tuners and the remote finder.

With both, I would get new fonts. :D

I think with all my other toys, it would be a wash.

  1. Do I need to upgrade at all? Someone talk me in or out of it.
  2. Are there any other advantages to either box I'm missing?

Bridge Moca to Eth on Mini

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 11:06
Can a moca connected mini 'bridge' the internet over to the ethernet port?

I'd like to connect a game console to the mini if so.

Broadcast flag prohibiting use

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 09:53
I have a 2-tuner Premiere, Time Warner Cable and a new TiVo Stream.

I'm aware that Time Warner's overreaching broadcast flag makes it impossible for me to COPY anything but local broadcast stations either within or outside of my home network.

But I'm finding that I can't even STREAM non-local shows outside of my home network.

Is this correct?

I can download only local shows either in or outside of my home. I can stream everything inside my home. I can only stream local shows outside my home.

So I can't do anything but stream inside my home for non-local shows?

STREAMING outside my home should be allowed? Is TiVo making a copy? If not, Time Warner is overstepping their bounds (again).

Anyone have luck setting up a VPN so I can connect my iPad/iPhone to my home network that way? I just want the ability to stream all my recordings outside of my home.

FA Cup Soccer Jan 4 and 5

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 07:11
Just in case anyone's interested, US TV will have five FA Cup matches this weekend - four of them on Fox Sports 1 and one on the local FOX network affiliates.

These won't get picked up by any pass you may have for the Premiere League on NBCSN.

All my S3s are dieing!

Mon, 12/30/2013 - 01:37
It's funny, they are dieing in the opposite order they were purchased.

First the Tivo HD died. I didn't feel too bad about this one as it was a 'cheap' retention purchase and I was paying the grandfather rates on it. I called Tivo and replaced it with a 2-tuner Premier with ATSC support.

Then the original 3 Lifetimed S3s all started dieing. #3 died when I moved. If I let it boot loop enough times it would come up and be stable. It eventually stopped coming up and got shelved. I'll fix it when i need it.

#2 just up and stopped outputting video all together. I replaced the power supply and couldn't get past the welcome screen. I swapped the 1TB upgrade HDD from #3 into it and it booted right up. Clear and delete - good to go.

#3 is just now starting flake out like #1 did. I suppose I should just order the power supply now and get it over with.

I suppose after 7 years of service I can't be too upset. I'm just curious if any others are starting to see the S3 hardware roll over.

I might have to break down and buy a base model Roamio with lifetime for some 4-tuner fun. I'm just not quite sure I'm ready to drop $700 for the privilege. Sadly this is less than I paid for each of my S3s before service .

kmttg wish, enter/last switch playback for non-live tv

Sun, 12/29/2013 - 23:44
The enter/last tivo remote function only seems to switch if watching live tv and does nothing (on my roamio - at least) when watching a recorded show.

Could kmttg be enhanced to test for currently playing a recorded show and remember a previous play (from the now playing list) and then have the enter remote key (on the remote tab), save the current show id and switch to the last saved playback show, if any, instead of just sending the enter key which doesn't do anything?

Then after having chosen play on any two shows, the enter key could flip back and forth between these two in one operation, continuing each where it left off previously.

I understand this can sort of be done now, but not in one click from the remote tab page.

Stuck in S03 Hell: what to do next

Sun, 12/29/2013 - 21:02
Hello everyone!

We recently re-subscribed to digital cable (and have a new Tuning Adapter with TW) after a few years of only having OTA channels. A few months after that my S3 HD TiVo (which had been solid as a rock) started acting up, claiming it didn't have all of its program info. So tonight, like an idiot, I re-ran guided setup while I researched the problem further.

And while guided setup took forever to complete, I read all about how the TA's keep the garbage collection from happening, and that all you have to do is leave the TA unplugged periodically to get everything working again, but you should never, ever run guided setup when you're in this state. Uh oh.

So, as you have probably guessed, guided setup failed with an S03 error. So now I think I'm hosed.

I tried all of the relevant kickstarts. 57, 54, 52. The last one I tried was 58, and after trying that one I am now stuck in a permanent GSOD reboot cycle. I am thinking I need to take some drastic action.

I did a bit of TiVo hacking with my old Series 1, but I was too lazy to do anything special with this HD. I even got the external WD expander drive when it came time to get more space, so I still have the stock drive in the unit. I have a lot of reading up to do on how the state of the TiVo hacking tools have changed over the past 8 years or so....

I don't think there is any way to save the recorded shows at this point, is there? From what I have read, my best bet may be to take a truncated backup of my current drive, wipe the drive, and then reapply the truncated backup. Then put my TA on a timer. :P

(I plan on checking for dodgy capacitors first, then doing some good scans of those drives, to make sure that they are still good.)

Any comments or suggestions on what to do next?

Thank you!

Premiere Mini MOCA issue

Sun, 12/29/2013 - 20:50
Was watching football this afternoon on the mini (connected to XL4 moca bridge) and it paused for a second and then the mini reset itself. When the mini came back up, it had the C130 issue and I have been unable to get it back on the MOCA network. Called TIVO and we power cycled everything (network, XL4, mini) and got nowhere.

The XL4 is able to make a service call and the internet connection (via ethernet) is very active. I'm not sure if the XL4 isn't doing its job creating the MOCA network or if the Mini isn't working. Anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?

Roamio Keeps Losing Audio

Sun, 12/29/2013 - 20:22
I have had a Roamio for about a month and twice in the last 2 or 3 weeks, I have turned on the TV/receiver and there is no sound coming from the speakers.
I tried restarting the receiver, switching back and forth between Dolby and PCM on the Tivo and still no sound.
The first time it happened I unplugged the Tivo and restarted it and that fixed it. This time I tried putting the Tivo in standby and the switching back to to live TV and the sound came back.
I don't want to have to keep doing that every few weeks. How can this be permanently fixed?
