Ok, the spoiler thread. I previously discussed the first of the two episodes in another thread
, when it was posted to the internet, but some probably waited until it hit the air.
During the scene with Karen listening in on Jimmy playing and singing in the bar, the only thing I kept thinking was: "Chuck? Chuck? It's Marvin... your cousin, Marvin BERRY... You know that new sound you were looking for? Well listen to THIS!!!" :D
I think I liked the first episode better than the second, and I'm not sure why. I think maybe because the whole first episode seemed a little more grounded. I had trouble believing the second episode, and it didn't help that they decided to include a fantasy musical number. (the Eurythmics "Would I Lie To You?") That, plus them crashing (and being allowed to crash) the Wing's gala seemed to stretch incredulity.
I think, at least for me, I would prefer if they wouldn't try and force musical numbers into this show. This show isn't Glee
. This show actually has a decent dramatic storyline in addition to the music. I'd prefer if the music comes when it fits in naturally, and if that means less music on this show, I'm OK with that. It makes when they can feature it that much more special. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that's the way this show is going.
I'm not sure what to think of Jimmy. There's something rather offputting about the way the actor is performing the character. I'm not sure if I can describe it well enough. I think it may be that he doesn't come across quite natural enough. He seems a little stiff. And frankly, in those moments where he wasn't mad at Karen, where he was supposed to be flirting with her, I actually think there was *anti*-chemistry, like he was sucking the chemistry away from the other characters in the scene. I dunno, maybe it's just me.
The song of Jimmy's that Karen sang was actually rather good... but then the clip of the song that Karen and Derek listened to was, frankly, rather cringe-worthy. The show's musical writers need to try harder if they want me to believe this is the next Rent
, because although he sang the hell out of it. the "Broadway Here I Come" song wasn't very good either.
