failed to record due to large overlap

Mon, 12/23/2013 - 00:02
Today my roamio didn't record the second game on cbs because of a large overlap. I wanted to set up my football records to add lots of time, just in case of a long overtime. Since the choices are 1, 1 1/2, and 3 hours, and I really wanted about 2 hours extra, I chose 3 hours instead. So I got the first game plus 3 hours of the second game which wasn't quite enough. These are season passes for all the football games so the 3 hour pad is automatic.

Others here mentioned that they found that with an overlap it would record both (fully) but just didn't show the recording in myshows or as recording in the todo list.

I found it in the todo list, but not shown as recording, and as mentioned, it never recorded it at all.

Ok, so maybe 3 hours extra is overkill, but still this seems to be a bug. Now I don't know if setting this back to 1 1/2 hours will work, or if I have to go back to setting 8 hour manual records on the two football networks.

The history stated that it didn't record the second game because it was no longer in the guide. Actually, that is not true as the guide showed the second game ending after the total of the first game plus the 3 hours. But it was close, there was 5 minutes extra. The show should have started at 1:25, and ended at 4:30. The early game was 10:00 to 1:25, with 3 hours takes that to 4:25. So, while close, it shows the algorithm is off. Had it done as requested, it should have recorded the second show from 1:25 to 7:30 or there abouts.

Beside for fixing this problem, I'd like to see the add extra time allow for 2 and 2 1/2 hours extra. With all the choices at the low end, who cares if there's a few extra button pushes to get to the 3 hour range. Then I could have chosen say, 2 hours and it might have worked. I have run out on occasion recording a long extra innings baseball game and so I generally add the maximum time and don't worry about it - got plenty of disc space.

HD netflix not working. 25 Mbps too slow?

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 23:46
I did a speed test and my Comcast speed is 30 Mbps. I can use YouTube 1080 P easy, but my Netflix won't go past 480. Will it help to get comcasts blast 25-50 Mbps? I know my modem capability (doxic 2) caps out before 50 Mbps. I had blast speed before but I downgraded because I didn't think it was necessary for the highest quality Netflix. When I had blast before I noticed Netflix HD was working. if 25 Mbps is sufficient for the highest Netflix quality then what could the problem be?

Subtitle question (this is not about cc)

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 23:39
Most of my PC video is various TiVo shows I archived off my Premier. I also have some other, misc videos, so I decided I would also like to archive some of my DVDs and be able to stream them back to the TiVo.

My question is around closed captions. I have a DVD set that is in another primary language, but has English subtitles. If I archive that on a PC (Win7), I can see the subtitles on the monitor, so I know they are there. This is not the closed captions, but the subtitles available. Is there a way to stream these to the TiVO Premier for watching on my TV and toggle the subtitles?

Does the cc option in the info screen also detect subtitles when available?

HDMI output not working no matter what on Roamio Plus

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 22:24
Have had my Roamio Plus and TiVo Mini setup for less than a week. This morning the HDMI output on the Plus won't work no matter what I try. Everything else works. I can use the component output from the Plus to drive my TV. The Mini works. Everything seems fine, except for HDMI.

I've tried:
  • power cycle
  • leave unplugged for 30 minutes
  • move Plus to different TV
  • plug in Series 3 to TV that Mini was on, using same HDMI cable, works fine.
  • Plus on new TV and HDMI won't work where a Premiere, Series 3 and Mini all worked fine.

I think I've ruled out every combination I can think of. My Software Version is 20.3.8-USA-6-848.

I've seen the threads about an HDMI standby bug where you use a few tricks to get it to come back. I tried those a little bit, but didn't dig in too deep since power cycles didn't help.

Is it time for a warranty replacement or is there some trick I can use to get this back?

Latest update (20.3.8) is making me re-think Tivo...

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 22:15
I can't help thinking that Tivo is just getting worse instead of better...

Since this latest update (or, over the last few updates)...

1. "resume" does not work, except in rare circumstances.

2. What the heck happened to all the podcasts?? No extended podcasts any more from the (paid) Tivo Desktop app - and the fairly good list of podcasts that used to be available are now reduced down toa short list of "useless". Plus, I'd better really like the podcasts I'm subscribed to, 'cause there's no way to get rid of them.

3. OTA tuners are worse than ever! (My HDHomerun works soooo much better than Tivo...)

4. "Suggestions" is downloading stuff hand-over-fist - especially stuff I've already marked "thumbs down", like every children's show ever produced.

5. Opera Store???? This is about as helpful and useful as AOL.ON. (Oh, sorry - I just noticed the AOL.on logo in the lower right hand corner - no wonder!) It's also unreadable at 10 ft., hard to navigate and very, very slow.

6. I don't remember exactly where, but somewhere in that mess is an ad-crazy video clip section. 1 minute ads before you can watch a 20-second video - and, it's every video, not just one time.

7. No longer sees my computers on the network, or Playon, or any of the other servers that I have.

8. The ads Tivo scatters about (especially the "tailgate potty" ads) - are getting to be more than just a little intrusive.

I have a Tivo Premiere (OTA only) and a Tivo 3 (lifetime). Seriously thinking about dumping the Premiere and replacing it with my Windows Media Center computer.

I had such high hopes for Tivo (sigh)

Detect when a channel has no signal and stop recording

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 20:31
This has been happening more frequently since I enabled suggestions feature. My TiVo is recording shows on channels that I do not pay for in my cable provider lineup. When I tune to the channel not in my cable lineup the TiVo pops up an alert message stating you must not have this channel in your line up error (v58). If the TiVo tuner could detect there is no signal when trying to record a show it would free up the tuner to record a channel that I do receive.

I know, why is the channel listed in your TiVo channels guide if you don't pay for the channel, well I try to keep it cleanup, but with the frequent changes that are made to my cable lineup it would be nice if the TiVo had a feature like this.

Ethernet port specs

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 19:01
I can't seem to locate anywhere the specifications for model of network controller in the mini. The reason for wanting to know is because the network connection will not negotiate faster than 100mb full.

I thought the nic supported gigabit. If not gigabit wouldn't the MOCA adapter be faster speeds than 100mb?

If it does support gigabit I will need to check my cables to make sure they support gigabit speeds.

TIVO HD does not respond to remote

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 18:42
I have a TIVO HD which suddenly is not responding to my remote, or my harmony controller.
I have done a global reset of the remote and I have powered down the TIVO several times. Once it worked for a few minutes then stopped accepting commands.
The Green light is on.
The TIVO unit responds to signals by the secondary yellowish light coming on when the remote buttons are hit. So the problem appears to be on the TIVO unit side.
Any suggestions?

How to stop playback while still recording?

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 18:41
This is probably a dumb question, but here goes anyway.

I just acquired a Premiere XL to replace a HD (Series 3).

On the HD, if I was watching a football game from the beginning while it is STILL RECORDING and I wanted to stop playback, I'd simply left-arrow out and back to the menu. When I wanted to resume, I'd select the game and it would resume from the point that I stopped viewing.

On the Premiere, this doesn't work: the recording keeps playing in the video window. So how do I stop the playback? Do I just hit pause? If so, how long does the pause last? What happens when pause goes off? Is there any other navigational difference from the HD that I should know about?

What about TiVo adding new VOD services?

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 17:36
There are so many now available on other platforms that by now I would think TiVo would have included them with the new software for the roamio. The most important one for me would be Amazon Prime access. I use it quite often because of all the free movie and tv shows they offer is one of the best.

Some others would be Vudu, crackle, espn, and many more.

TiVo and Comcast Resume VOD Rollout; Maryland Included?

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 17:20
Dave Zatz recently posted on his blog that TiVo and Comcast have resumed the rollout of VOD support for TiVo DVRs. Does anyone have any rumors or information on whether or not the rest of Maryland will be included in this rollout?

Move recorded shows from Series 3 HD to new Roamio

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 15:56
Can I still move my recordings off the Series 3 without paying the monthly tivo subscription? I recall there being some tools that you can run on a pc that can copy the recordings off the hard drive with it connected to the pc via the sata drive controller. Is that a possibility or not?

Transfer from TiVoHD to Roamio fails

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 15:29
I bought a Roamio yesterday. Setup took just under two hours.

I wanted to copy a bunch of shows from my TiVoHD to the new box. They're both connected via Ethernet (to a switch that is connected to a router). From the Roamio now playing list I see the TiVoHD, but when I select it, I get this error:
The living room dvr's shows could not be displayed because of a network problem.Does this look familiar to anyone? The Roamio system status TiVoToGo says "a,a,a,a" (yes, there are four of them), the TiVoHD says "a,a,a" if it helps. The Roamio Whole Home Advanced Help sees both boxes and thinks that transferring recorded shows is supported.

I can log into YouTube from anywhere, EXCEPT my TiVo?

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 11:04
I can't find anything quite on point with a search - so, here goes..

Last night I tried logging into YouTube from my TiVoHD. Login rejected. Twice. I tried it from my Sony BluRay/Streaming player. No problem!

Later, I get an Email from Google....

It WAS me, and I was having NO trouble accessing my account. Google, in their divine expertise, just decided not to let me log in, despite the correct username AND password. It had no problem 5 minutes later, letting me log in from my BluRay player, and of course, I'm logged in on-line.

So, no explanation from Google as to how to ever successfully log in from my TiVo again. Any thoughts?

Roamio plus streaming to iOS question.

Sun, 12/22/2013 - 10:53
Just installed my Roamio Plus before I left for the holidays. Before I left, i logged in to the tivo app from home wifi and was able stream to my iphone.

This morning I logged in to my TiVo app over good wifi at my in-laws (20mb download speeds), the "watch on iPhone" options are greyed out. I can view the guide and set recordings.

Am I wrong or should I be able to stream when I'm on wifi?

Thanks in advance for any help/knowledge.
