Troubleshooting - No Channels

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 15:45
Roamio Plus. In operation for approximately 2 months. Suddenly stopped working on all channels. Tivo suggest try new Cable card. Tried two different cable cards. Both pair correctly, but still no channels.

The CC conditional access screen shows correct info for:
CON: Yes EBCP: Yes VAL: V 0x*

Here is the interesting thing. there is no further data on the Conditional access screen. Tivo support says there should be additional info. Indeed , on my series three I do get a lot more info on that conditional access screen.

DVR diags show all tuners have tuned to proper channel number but there is no signal data - Freq, SN etc.

I have a truck roll for Sunday AM, but I am thinking I have a bad Tivo.

Any ideas?

Netflix on RCN cable

is there any work around to get the netflix app on TIVO premiere on RCN cable?

Tivo Cable box?

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 11:06
My Cable/Internet provider is RCN. It is great because they are a Tivo shop internally (the only DVR's they offer are Tivos), so they don't do things that fork over customer owned Tivo (no tuning adapters!!). What I didn't know until today is that even their non recorders are made by Tivo. I just got rid of my last SD TV and needed to upgrade the box so I called RCN and asked them to change it over. Imagine my surprise when the tech shows up with a little box (maybe 6" X12" X 2"--is that the Tivo Mini form factor?) with the Tivo logo on it, and a Tivo peanut remote to control it. The downside of this was that the box uses ethernet to connect to RCN so the tech had to install a MOCA bridge on my router (which meant I needed to shuffle the connections on my Router).

I'm trying to figure out how hackable this box is, does anyone else have one? I was able to turn on "network remote control", but of course the Tivo app won't control it without a different login. It has a USB port on the back, I'm wondering if I can get it to see a keyboard (although there isn't going to be a lot of text input to that box).

Ideas, suggestions are welcome -- this is mostly an academic project for me (there was a reason why that was the last SD TV in the house, it isn't watched all that much).

Mini Network Activity Lights

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 10:28
Got my Tivo Mini hooked up without a hitch last night. I have mine in the bedroom. All was well till it was lights out for the night. The connect and activity lights for the network connection are bright! Looked like lightning flashing in the dark against the wall....A couple of pieces of tape this morning fixed that problem! Otherwise no compaints at all. I think I'm gonna love the Mini!!!:up:

TiVo Roamio Pro with Lifetime for $699.99

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 10:23
I was recently given the opportunity to buy a Roamio for $699.99 with lifetime which was delivered and set up a few days ago.

I'm now selling Premiere and Stream with the hopes of paying for my new Roamio.

http://ebay.com/itm/321298323965 (Premiere XL4 with Lifetime)
http://ebay.com/itm/321294672163 (Stream)

I was given 3 codes and have so far only used one for the Roamio, but given I already have 2 mini's I doubt I'll need them. The codes are similar to those I have read about before (employee/retail discount) which seem to allow you to buy as many 4 minis at the lower price

TiVo Roamio DVR
$149.99 + $9.99/mo. service, 1-year commitment required
$499.99 (includes one-time service payment)
TiVo Roamio Plus DVR
$299.99 + $9.99/mo. service, 1-year commitment required
$599.99 (includes one-time service payment)
TiVo Roamio Pro DVR
$399.99 + $9.99/mo. service, 1-year commitment required
$699.99 (includes one-time service payment)
TiVo Mini
$49.99 + $5.99/mo. service, 1-year commitment required
$174.00 (includes one-time service payment)
TiVo Stream
$97.50

By my calculations the Pro is the best choice as the Plus + harddrive option break even with the discount and I'd rather have the warranty intact (still $29.99 for 3-years)

So if you bought a Roamio Pro and 4 minis with lifetime from Tivo you would normally pay

Pro - $599.99
Service - $499.99
4 x Mini with lifetime (@249.98) - $999.92
Total = $2099.90 + Tax

With the code I used you would save $703.91

Pro - $399.99
Service - $300.00
4 x Mini with lifetime (@174.00) - $696.00
Total = $1395.99 + Tax

Even shopping around you save $473.91

Pro - $523.95 (amazon)
Service - $399.99 (existing user discount)
4 x mini with lifettime (@86 + 149.99) - $943.96
Total = $1867.90 + Tax

Right now I'm thinking I may give these codes to some family who have expressed an interest, but if there is legitimate interest here I may auction them off. I'm reluctant to put them on eBay as I don't think the average eBay buyer understands the value.

If anyone has a suggestion of how best to use them please feel free to comment. Obviously I don't want a hundred posts all saying "I'll take them off your hands" as I have family already lined up in that spot.

The Following Season 2 Premiere question

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 08:17
I just noticed on my TiVo that The Following Season 2 is premiering on Sunday the 19th at 10:30 with a 90 minute episode called Resurrection.

It returns to its regular Monday night slot on the 27th at 9 pm, but they are re-running the first episode at 8 and there - it's only 60 minutes.

Surely this can't be an additional 30 minutes of commercials on the 18th. Can it?
Or is this just a Sunday Night football thing?

Sherlock-Streaming from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 06:23
I watched "Unlocking Sherlock" on PBS the other night and it got me interested in the show. I looked and it was available on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon streaming.

I watched the first Episode and loved it. I did some research and there seems to be only 3 episodes per season and the episodes are 1.5 to 2 hours long. I'm thinking I want to see the 3rd season so I was hoping it was on PBS. I found it on Masterpiece Mystery!. But it says "Sherlock, Series III: The empty (Sea 6 Ep14). Season 6? 14 episodes. I set it to record but not sure if I'm getting season 3 of Sherlock or not.

Saving a Tivo disk

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 00:28
Hi, I have an SD-DVR40 Series 2 Tivo. Never had a problem with the Tivo receiver until today. Came home from work and I noticed that the Tivo was stuck on a particular frame of the temporary 30 window.

I thought it was because perhaps the Pause button was clicked. But it wasn't. Playing Play did nothing. Pressing the DirecTV button did nothing. Tried the buttons on the box, rather than using the remote. Nothing.

So I rebooted it. When it came up, it got stuck at the "Welcome Powering Up..." stage. Left it for 30 minutes, nothing.

I rebooted it again, and again, stuck at "Welcome Powering Up...." stage.

So I took apart the box and checked the disk. I have an MFSLive 4.1 disk and I booted up a PC from that. Trying to see if there's a problem with the boot partition of the disk.

I have two questions:

1) Is there any tools/SW on MFSLive that allows me to check and fix bad superblock sectors? FSCK is disabled on MFSLive. And pdisk is limited. It only showed all the partitions but did not display anything that said that the disk had a bad sector

2) I can live with a bad disk. I have spare Western Digital PATA drives. MFSLive has the dd_rescue tool that allows me to copy the contents of the original disk to a new disk. My question is, if I was to copy to a new disk, does the new disk have to be baked with InstantCake first? Or can I copy to it in virgin form?

Thanx.

Series 2 with lifetime?

Thu, 01/16/2014 - 23:47
I have a single tuner series 2 Tivo with lifetime that I haven't used in years but have moved more than once. I'm moving again, and it's time for it to go.

I am using it for MSD, but that's it. Doesn't look like it's worth much, so might just take it to the electronics recycler.

One question is this: I like my Tivo HD, but I'm tired for paying for it. I made the mistake of being month to month on it this whole time which is my fault, but I don't really think it's worth the $12/mo any more, given how much streaming you can buy for the same amount.

Is there anyway that I could get tivo to roll my life time from my s2 to this old Tivo HD? Or if I bought a new tivo, would there be any opportunity to add a cheap lifetime to it given my long time loyalty?

Remote Sending RF and IR Signals

Thu, 01/16/2014 - 22:58
My roamio is tucked away and needs an RF signal to operate. My remote MOSTLY send RF signals (green light on top of remote) but every once in awhile will send an IR signal (red light at top of remote) which doesn't work for my setup. I have to push the buttons a few times then all of a sudden it switches back to RF. Has anyone else experienced this? I went thru the pairing process and thought it was RF only. Is there a way to turn off IR altogether?

Need to upgrade original storage got some questions please help!

Thu, 01/16/2014 - 22:05
Got the 500GB Roamio 3+ months ago and I only record things in standard definition but I almost run out of room. Just curious if I remove the original HDD, put a new HDD then maybe 6 months from now I wanted to view an old show again on the original HDD, can I take out the replacement HDD, put back the original and the shows will be there to watch again? Also which HDDs would you guys recommend? I want at least a 3TB drive that is on sale/good price right now. And is there a video on other instructions on how to take the HDD out? Thanks!

Hart of Dixie Season 3

Thu, 01/16/2014 - 20:45
Any still watching besides me? Season 2 thread only had 8 posts, so not expecting much traffic, but thought I'd give it a shot.

I am not liking Joel at all. I want Zoe and Wade back together.

Still liking Levon and Annabeth. Can't stand George, so don't care who he is with...actually, I'd like for him to move out of town.

Really glad Brick took Zoe back and they've dropped the friction between them. I do wish there was more focus on the Doctor story lines and less on the dating stuff.

And more Rose story lines. She is just too cute!

Shows restart after a few minutes with back to back recordings

Thu, 01/16/2014 - 20:37
Noticed something wierd with my new Roamio tonight.

I record Pawn Stars with a season pass. At 8:00, I changed the channel to 175 to watch the show. The first two minutes or so played, then all of a sudden the screen froze for a second and the show started again at the beginning of the episode. Once it played through to the point where it restarted, the picture freezes and pixelates for a second then plays normally. The first time I thought it was a fluke, but it happened again at 8:30P.

Anyone see this before or know what I can do to resolve?

Realistic limit for Moca

Thu, 01/16/2014 - 20:33
Since Charter is heading to 100% digital, I need to either get a Mini for the garage and have sports available or get a Ruko3 and just have streaming.

With the Mini it's $100 + monthly (or $$$/lifetime). I have a coax homerun out there, but it's 75' long. Do I have an expectation of using Moca with that distance ??? I'm leaning this way, but I don't want to find out that Moca wont work and have to install the cat5.

With Ruko it's $100 but I'd have to run cat5 from the tv to my switch out there. Since I'm running one, I just as well run 3 to future proof. It's not going to be any harder but I have obstacles to go through and a patch panel to mount no matter how many I run. Conduit would be nice except I only have an inch to go between the heat duct and ceiling.

Any thoughts ....

Under the Gunn S1 all-season thread spoilers to date

Thu, 01/16/2014 - 20:32
Lifetime's new show Under the Gunn starts tonight.

From the teasers, it seems to be a cross between Project Runway and The Taste.

Former Project Runway designers Anya Ayoung-Chee, Mondo Guerra, and Nick Verreos get to see if they have what it takes to be a mentor like Tim Gunn.

One of the judges is Zanna Roberts Rassi from PR All-Stars.

Quote: With a new Emmy® Award in hand, Tim Gunn takes the reigns as host of Lifetime's new fashion competition series, "Under the Gunn," premiering January 16, 2014, at 9pm ET/PT. America's favorite mentor, Tim passes the torch to "Project Runway" alumni Mondo Guerra, Anya Ayoung-Chee and Nick Verreos, who have shown their prowess on the runway as contestants, but now must prove they have the vision and business savvy to mentor and manage a fashion empire with 15 new up-and-coming designers under their watch. Each mentor will have a team of designers they must manage, coach, cheerlead and, when necessary, knock down with tough love in order to lead them to runway success. This new crop of designers will face the critiques of designer Rachel Roy, celebrity stylist Jen Rade, creator of some of the most iconic red carpet looks in Hollywood, and TV fashion correspondent and Marie Claire Senior Fashion Editor Zanna Roberts Rassi.

In the first two episodes of "Under the Gunn," Spoiler: Tim will present a race-around-the-clock challenge to the fashion hopefuls as Mondo, Anya and Nick measure the skill level of the contestants and duke it out to determine which four designers will land on their teams. In the subsequent episodes, Tim will present new challenges that will test the mentors' ability to bring out the best in their designers as they guide them through the competition. While the designers are whittled down during the season, only the most talented and creative individuals will survive to compete in the finale, where one designer—and one mentor—will be deemed the winners of "Under the Gunn." A request: can the first person to post about a new episode put the episode title and Air date in the post title or at the top of their post? Thanks!

P.S. yes, I spoilered the press release's description of the challenges in episodes one and two above because -- as I write this -- episode one hasn't finished airing on the East Coast yet, and hasn't aired in my time zone at all.

About to get Verizon Fios Triple play with a Roamio Plus. Any tips?

Thu, 01/16/2014 - 19:13
So I currently have DirectTV and DirectTVs DVR and then Time Warner for Internet and Phone.

I plan to take advantage of Verizon FIOS Triple Play FIOS and get a Roamio Plus Tivo and take advantage of the Verizon Triple play special running out on January 18th 2014.

From the boards I see that I need to watch out for Verizon not getting me the $300 Visa Prepaid Card that comes with the Triple Play bundle, but other than that it seems I should be good.

I want to keep my current phone number, which by preliminary going thru order process it appears the number can be used.

It appears that getting the cable card to work isn't as bad as apparently it is with Time Warner it seems from the boards (wow, saw a lot of horror stories with Time Warner).

So my plan is:

1. Go online and order the Verizon Triple play (take screen shots along the way showing all the credits etc, especially the $300 Prepaid Card if charges are not what I expected).
2. Get a Roamio Tivo Plus from Best Buy.
3. Wait for Verizon to do the install with the Cable Card and Tivo.
4. Cancel my Time Warner account.
5. Cancel my DirectTV (may wait a little to watch or transfer what I have recorded).

Am I missing anything I should watch out for.

Search across xfinity on demand with TiVo iPhone app

Thu, 01/16/2014 - 19:08
I recently upgraded my iPhone app and now do not have the ability to search across xfinitiny on demand and Hulu. Previously when I used to use the search option it would allow me to chose xfinitiny on demand shows and allowed me to watch them

Anyone have any idea how to get this feature turned on??

Thanks!

Transfer Tivo shows back to new Tivo from PC??

Thu, 01/16/2014 - 17:58
Before my 6 year old Tivo died, I had transferred to my PC thru my Tivo Desktop several movies. I just ordered a new Roamio which will arrive tomorrow. Is there any way for me to transfer these shows back into my new Roamio?
If not I really want to burn these shows (unavailable on DVD) onto a DVD. I have 2 questions regarding this:
1) Do the files have to be re-formatted into another file type in order to burn them to a DVD using software?
2) If anyone cam recommend a simple not-to-expensive software program that will convert the files (if needed), allow me to edit out commercials, etc., and then burn these saved Tivo files onto a DVD I would be most greatful. I'm software challenged so I can't do anything too technical. THANKS. I've been using Tivo now for over 12 years and ma just on my 3rd unit.
