basic questions...

Sun, 12/08/2013 - 10:56
I'm going to to be traveling to my mom's house which doesn't have tv over the holidays. I've got the stream installed & love it for our ipads *but* i've still got a few questions,

I assume we don't have the capability to stream over the web yet?

The stream only works to an ios device? not a laptop?

Tivo Desktop is the easy way to transfer shows to my laptop?

TiVo Mini Lost Connection v87

Sun, 12/08/2013 - 10:20
I get intermittent Lost Connection errors between a brand new TiVo Mini and a brand new TiVo Roamio connected directly to an Airport Extreme. This happens for all recordings (active or complete) even live TV.

TiVo Support ran me through things like unplug the Mini, Roamio. Connect to TiVo. Restart router. Force a new network connect. Nothing worked.

Expanding 1TB XL to 3TB

Sun, 12/08/2013 - 09:17
For those of you who are interested, a 1TB XL (748) can be expanded to 3TB. Ggieseke discovered that a Premiere XL can boot from a 3TB drive and that the important thing is that the image you need to work from is one of the later iterations of the OS. I have tried booting with older images but they bootloop. So if you have the original image backed up somewhere, you will need an update to it. Also you will need a copy of JMFS.

First copy the updated OS image to a 3TB drive. I used DvrBARS to do a modified backup and a quick restore. However, I believe using a variation of dd will work as well (ie using the copy selection in JMFS).

Once that is done, just use JMFS to expand and supersize the image. Here is a picture of my XL with a 3TB drive.

I have tried this with the 2TB XL4 (758) image but JMFS fails on expansion. So currently only a 1TB XL (748) can be expanded to the full 3TB drive. For those of you who are adventurous, after copying the 1TB image to the 3TB drive, you can 4k align it manually and then expand and supersize it.

Before someone asks, I don't think a Series 3 1TB HD can be expanded this way as JamieP pointed out in another thread, the kernel of Series 3 TiVo's does not appear to be compiled with large disk support. If someone wants to attempt this and report back on their findings then we would know for sure. Just make sure you use 11.0m when you do this.

TIVOHD XL (3TB Drive + WIFI ADAPTER) LIFETIME

Sun, 12/08/2013 - 09:05
TCD658000 with LIFETIME.

This is the real XL with certified THX. I say that because I notice people will install a bigger drive and call it XL on eBay, when it technically isn't.

Anyway, so this has a 3tb drive, and a wifi adapter as well.

$450

Will the Roamio series get more apps/updates?

Sun, 12/08/2013 - 05:04
I'm coming from the tivoHD series and I think in the 4 years I owned it, absolutely nothing changed. But I think technology also changed around it. We are so App-centric now, I just made up that word! So do you guys think Tivo will be more generous? For example, just to get Hulu Plus, you had to upgrade to the premiere which was ridiculous. I would be really upset if they add Amazon Prime down the line, and it'll be only for the Series 6 or something.

I actually don't know what I'm asking. LOL! Basically, the way the Roamio software/interface is built, is it more app friendly? Easier for Tivo to add new content and allow us to update? Were they just simply stingy with the tivoHD, or was it a matter of impossible programming that they couldn't allow us to update and get new apps?

Series 3 OLED (TCD648250B) Leaky Capacitor

Sat, 12/07/2013 - 19:23
I have a Series 3 OLED (TCD648250B) and at least one of the capacitors (C701) on the power supply is visibly leaking (see attached Attachment 19993) and I'm in need of some help/advice on how best to fix it.

Pretty sure C701 has looked that way for several months at least (quite possibly much longer)... I say that because I remember finding it several months ago and making a mental note to look into fixing it. Unfortunately a "mental note" wasn't good enough and I forgot about it. My TiVo decided to remind me by starting a "continuous reboot" cycle. :( Soo... I guess it's time to fix it, but I have a few questions first...

C701 appears to be the only bad one... I've done a visual inspection (several times) and none of the other caps in the power supply "look" bad... no leaking, no bulging (even subtle), no discoloration. I realize that's no guarantee they're good... just saying none of the others show any obvious signs of damage.

This post (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...93#post9131293) lists the specific caps for my model (TCD648250B). What I'm not sure about is should I replace just C701 or should I replace some/all of the others? The person (schoolbus) who posted that list said C401/C402 were visibly bad on his S3, but he went ahead and replaced 11 of the 15. Why not replace just C401/C402? Why replace only 11/15? Why THOSE 11?

Also, schoolbus's post says it was for:
Quote: TiVo S3 OLED capacitor list:
3Y power supply: CP-1104 R2
TiVo PN: SPWR-00008-000 Rev A3 Mine is actually slightly older I believe - CP-1104 and SPWR-00008-000 Rev A2. Are those sufficiently equal in terms of the caps to use?

I also found a nice link somewhere to a project on Mouser Electronics for each of those 11 caps (https://www.mouser.com/ProjectManage...sID=1a42eea4c1). This will be very helpful once I decide which caps I should replace.

So... how does one decide which ones to replace? Skill level? Confidence in making the repair? Specific symptoms? History of the TiVo? Age of the Tivo? Random guessing?

As for my skill/confidence level... well, I'd say my confidence is considerably higher then my actual skill. I'm more then willing to give it a go, but it's been quite a number of years since I've done ANY sort of circuit board soldering (probably high school 35 years ago) and even then it was only the most basic. None then less I'm quite sure I can do it... probably a bit more sure then I should be. :)

If specific symptoms might help narrow down which caps to replace, I'll be happy to go into more detail. Suffice it to say at this point, I'm fairly confident the continuous reboot is not DIRECTLY related to the power supply/bad cap. I'm pretty sure the rebooting issue is corrupted software. Could a bad cap cause software corruption without damaging the hard drive?

The S3 was originally purchased back in Oct 2006 with lifetime service (transferred from an S1) and does have a little history in terms of drive replacement and upgrades that I won't go into unless it will be helpful. It's been running pretty much continuously since then.

Given my over-confidence and lack of skill, it would probably be best just to replace C701, but if there's good reason to replace others, I'll do it.

As for tools... I have:

Are those tools sufficient for the job?

How hot should the iron be... I guess I'm limited to "low" or "high". :)
Should I get a smaller iron tip?

I've watched one youtube video about replacing a cap in a tivo power supply and I'll poke around for some others. I also plan to take the power supply out of an old DirecTV receiver that's destined for the recycle yard and do some practice desoldering and soldering.

Anything else I should need?

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Jitter or dropped frames....

Sat, 12/07/2013 - 19:21
I'm noticing major video jitter on recorded shows... My roamio is the pro with 150hr unit and if it matters my unit is 27% used.

Not any specific channel either.

By major I'm thinking its about 20fps

Thanks

Roamio & Series3 remote control conflict

Sat, 12/07/2013 - 18:43
Hello all!

I was able to take advantage of the Friends & Family discount to upgrade from a S3 OLED a Roamio Plus.

Shockingly, my CableCard pairing on Fios was smooth without any issues, but I'm having an issue with the remote controls.

My S3, now hooked up to a Slingbox, is located next to the Roamio. However, when I change channels on the S3 via Sling, my Roamio also changes to the same channel! I was under the impression that the Roamio used RF, while the S3 is IR.

Is there a way to get these two to coexist without moving them to separate rooms?

Thanks!

Connecting Mini to Roamio Pro - Tech Support Told Me I Need Both Ethernet & MoCA

Sat, 12/07/2013 - 17:21
I'm trying to setup a Mini with my Roamio Pro. I'm new to Tivo and the Roamio is working just fine.

Note, here are the instructions from the Tivo website on Mini installation:

1) Connect TiVo Mini to the TV.
- For high-definition TV, connect the HDMI cable (included in the package) between TiVo Mini and the TV.
- For other TV types, use component and/or composite breakout cables (available in the TiVo Store).

2) Connect TiVo Mini to the home network using Ethernet or MoCA.
- Ethernet: Connect TiVo Mini to an open input on the router or to an Ethernet jack in the wall using an Ethernet cable.
- MoCA: If you use a MoCA network in your home, connect the coax cable from the wall to the MoCA jack on the back of TiVo Mini.

3) Plug in the TiVo Mini power cord.

4) Make sure you have a direct line of sight between TiVo Mini and your TiVo remote control. If you plan to put TiVo Mini in a cabinet or other enclosed area, you will need a TiVo IR Adapter.

I noticed that instruction #2 uses a "or" for the type of connection. I choose to connect my Mini via Ethernet and a RG6 coax connection was NOT made. Well, I was getting the V70 error (Cannot Connect to DVR). I called Tech Support and they stated I needed to connect both Ethernet and RG6 Coax and set my Roamio network setting to "ethernet+MoCA". FYI, my Mini is activated on my account.

So is the Tivo Technician correct? If so, they need to change the instructions since when I read the "or", I implied that I could just use the Ethernet connection (and all the data would be sent from the Roamio to the Mini via IP).

Slew of problems with new Roamio Pro / Minis

Sat, 12/07/2013 - 16:05
These are really starting to drive me batty ...

Really three big ones:

- Periodically my Minis will get into a state where they won't play live TV. If I switch to Live TV, they'll play fine for 5-10 seconds, and then freeze. If I simply start a recording and watch a recording of the channel, everything is fine. Usually that "unsticks" it going forward, but I've had to reboot the Roamio to fix it a couple times.
- Periodically when I turn on a TV on one of the Minis, I get a blue screen with the spinning blue circle on it. Hard powering the Mini is the only fix when that happens. (May not be a Roamio issue, but rather a Mini issue?)
- I never, ever, have all of my damn channels authorized with the Cablecard. They come and go at random times. Some channels will work now and in an hour won't be working. Sometimes changing channels and then back again will bring a channel back up. I would've blamed this on Comcast, but twice I've had a channel not authorized error on the Roamio or a Mini, but another one connected to the Roamio works fine. Its clearly not a cablecard authorization problem if SOME tuners can get it.

On the latter one, Comcast support keeps blaming TiVo. I've had then re-authorize the cable hard a half dozen times, which does tend to fix things for a little while. I've replaced the card twice. All signs point to a TiVo problem.

The Roamio is my sixth TiVo in the last 14 years, and the first I've run into any real issues with. Are these common? Is the combination of Roamio and Mini still new and buggy?

Infrastructure-wise, its a Roamio Pro, three Minis on Comcast. Two of the minis are connected via MoCa. The Roamio and the third Mini are connected via Ethernet that is bridged via MoCa. (I had a MoCa network already in place when I got the Roamio). Monitoring the network, I don't see any reason to think there's anything network related causing the issues. (The only one that COULD be is the spinning circle, but a reboot wouldn't make it go away if it was a network issue.)

If anyone has any suggestions, they're appreciated. The new TiVos are getting a big thumbs down from the family, and I'm getting pressure to put back the old TiVo HD boxes... which I *really* don't want to do.

Roamio Hard Drive Upgrade Problem.

Sat, 12/07/2013 - 16:01
Greetings,
I have a new Roamio Basic that I upgraded the hard drive to a WD AV-GP 3 TB immediately after opening the box.

The physical installation of the drive went without any difficulties. Initial boot with the new drive took a exceptionally long time of over one hour due to the formatting of the large 3 Tb drive.

When the initial formatting and installation of the Tivo OS was complete the Tivo started to play it's startup annimations. These animations played back with stuttering and no audio. After this anomaly the remainder of the setup was uneventful.

On day three of the new Roamio I awoke to find the device rebooting. The reboot suffered the same startup animation stuttering and also exhibited very slow menu navigation and tuning to an ota channel resulted in the tv going blank for several minutes. The Roamio was unresponsive to remote commands at this time, I could however see that the yellow light on the Roamio blinked with remote presses.

The Roamio eventually recovered from this non responsive state and normal ota viewing resumed. Normal viewing continued for an hour or so. Eventually the non-responsiveness returned. This also had a blank channel guide during tuning.

At this point I was forced to reconsider my choice to upgrade the hard drive. I decided at this point re-install the original 500 Gb drive. This went without event. Initial startup with the new drive was fast and the the animations played smoothly. Menu navigation is fast and ota tuning is fast as well.

My question is, has anyone else experienced a similar issue related to a hard drive upgrade? At this point, barring someone else's opinion; I'm inclined to believe the new 3 Tb drive is defective.

Thought's anyone?

Thanks in advance.

Audio through stereo issue

Sat, 12/07/2013 - 14:30
I have a series 4 Tivo. The issue is that I can't get any cable channels to play through my stereo. However, I can stream songs from my computer through the Tivo and they play through the stereo just fine. I have my stereo connected to the Tivo box with an optical cable.

I am not very knowledgable about stereo stuff. So I may be overlooking something simple.

Thanks for any help.

20.3.8 Coming Soon

Sat, 12/07/2013 - 13:42
New Priority List is up for 20.3.8:
http://www.tivo.com/priority_20_3_8 (note tivo.com/priority redirects to the priority_20_3_8 page now). Also, as the quote below shows, Minis and Roamios don't need to add their TSNs to the list. They'll update as soon as it's released, supposedly. Quote: We are preparing to release a software update (20.3.8) for TiVo Premiere, TiVo Mini, and TiVo Roamio boxes. TiVo Roamio and TiVo Mini boxes will automatically receive the update on the day it becomes available. TiVo Premiere boxes will be updated in groups. If you would like your TiVo Premiere to be in one of the first groups to be updated, please enter your TiVo Service Number below.

Note: Only TiVo Premiere boxes purchased directly from TiVo.com or a retailer are eligible for this update. Boxes provided by cable companies will be updated on a different schedule.

There Should Be An Easy Way to Return to Netflix Shows Within the Tivo Central GUI

Sat, 12/07/2013 - 13:17
Within the Tivo Central interface, I know is very easy and seamless to search, select, and watch Netflix shows. The problem is that it is not as easy to return to the show. For example, let's say I started watching Breaking Bad. I then stop it halfway through Season 1, Episode 3. Now a week later goes by you want to continue watching it and you don't remember what episode you are on. I know you can go directly into Netflix and it will list recently watch shows. In my opinion, there should be a "Recently Watch" menu within the Tivo Central GUI where is lists all the streaming shows and record shows that you watched in the past and you can easily resume where you left it.

So am I missing something? Is there an easy way within the Tivo Central GUI to resume your Netflix shows? To me, it seems that Tivo is trying to merge other streaming services into the Tivo ecosystem to make it transparent but it's not there yet.

Upgrade hard drive later

Sat, 12/07/2013 - 13:03
Just got my TiVo Roamio Plus and was going to set it up this weekend, although there is no rush. Still waiting for the Mini which should arrive early next week.

Anyway, I think I'll want to upgrade to 3TB right away. What are the downsides to getting started with existing drive and using the TiVo for a few days, weeks or even months?

I know recordings would be lost. May not be a big deal. Maybe they can be transferred to computer and back if needed?

Would I need to re-run guided setup with new drive?

Cable cards need to be re-paired?

Anything else?

Thanks!

JRiver Media Center 19 and Tivo Premier

Sat, 12/07/2013 - 12:37
My TIVO Premiers are working fine with TIVO Desktop Plus 2.8.3 with either TiVo Beacon or Bonjour. I'm evaluating JRivers Media Center 19 and can't get it to work with TIVO and can't find any instructions that pertain to version 19.

Does anybody have this working?
