Gold Rush - Best Season

Sat, 01/18/2014 - 08:34
Yeah, industry!!

splitting analog cable and costs, legal advice please!

Sat, 01/18/2014 - 08:34
hi all,

my in-laws still have about 80 channels of analog service and only analog service. no digital, no cable internet even.

they have 3 tvs hooked up, (each with a series2 btw). I was really mad to learn however that along with their regular monthly service, they pay for two additional outlets.

so presumably, the first one is included for the "first" tv, (whichever one that is), and then they pay a fee for each of the remaining two!

I think this is bogus (at least in the USA). this is regular analog, and I see no reason not to call up the cable company and tell them to remove the charges going forward. my understanding is that you can split the signal as much as you want once inside a normal, single family residence, and you don't have to pay for doing so.

am I correct? can someone point me to a WWW with the legal / law stating such? I want backup when calling the cable company.

Missing Recordings

Sat, 01/18/2014 - 07:57
I own the Tivo Premiere 4 (TCD750500) and we are missing shows that WERE recorded.

This morning, our box was 100% flu, which is not really an issue because my wife tapes a lot. However, there was only about 19 recordings being shown. My wife was confused by this, so she deleted a few shows and for the hell of it, deleted recently deleted items.

This reduced it to 94% for basically 19 HD shows and 2 SD shows. Even if the SD shows were HD, that would only be 28% full.

I pulled the plug for 15 seconds and then later did a reboot from the menu, but it wasn't fixed.

I noticed that "Record Settings" is not shown-- this is where you set the quality of your recordings. I have this on another box, so I don't know for sure if this box is supposed to have it.

FINALLY, my wife realized that she is missing tons of her shows. 94% is probably correct for what she had taped, but now none of the shows are visible. What is up with that?

Thanks for you insight/solutions!

Real TiVo's with cable companies TiVo's - Do they play together?

Sat, 01/18/2014 - 05:02
I'm on Mediacom cable and they are starting to offer TiVo's which appear to be the newer TiVo's that include as they describe "whole house" DVR's using TiVo mini.

According to them, their TiVo's will not function with the real TiVo as they claim they are flashed with custom firmware which for example that allow two way communication with their cable cards (to enable PPV and on demand features). I find this difficult to believe as the common platform exists and every aspect to of the my case companies TiVo's is identical to the new Roamio using the mini boxes to run off the main unit. I'm not sure if I believe them as they know very little about TiVo and the service that TiVo offers, the last service guy was fascinated with my TiVo last summer when I had a service call to fix a issue I was having with my Internet access, while he knew what cable cards were he didn't know of that TiVo's could utilize them as he was lost when he was confirming my cable service was working as he browsed channels which I showed him the signal meter in the TiVo ui.

Has anyone expirenced worked with such and can you confirm that Cc branded TiVo service will in fact not function with the standard networked TiVo service? I was pleased to hear my cable company making this change but disappointed that one would have to choose between on or the other and not use both together.

On a side note, are there any cable companies that have two way communication abilities to allow purchasing PPV and on demand features with their cable card? This is something I always wish I had on my TiVo which I guess I can have now but would have get rid of my true TiVo in lieu of my cable company branded TiVo's.

On a side note, I guess it's been awhile since I logged in here, better update my signature!

2 Pandora Apps

Sat, 01/18/2014 - 01:33
So we finally received the new Pandora HTML5 app, but I also see a little down the list is the old Pandora App. If I am correct soon the old version will be deleted from the list or are we suppose to compare the two between lag times. Once I signed in with our account all of the playlist appeared. Was a little hard to adapt to new layout but overall seems to be going smooth. Overall like the new change. :D

Real Time

Sat, 01/18/2014 - 00:54
What was up with the audio in Real Time tonight. It was all echoey and weird.

Plus that woman that came out mid show seemed like she was f*cking high. I haven't seen someone that loopy on live TV since I use to watch American Idol and Paula Abdul was still a host.

Will TiVo S2 modem work on a Uverse phone line

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 22:33
I find myself in a weird situation trying to 'bootstrap' a new replacement drive for my S2. I did a search and have not found anyone else that has had this issue so now I must ask....

Backgound... The large drive (320gb WD) that I had in my S2 (nightlight) lifetime tivo died without warning after about 5 years on the job. I tried the freezer trick to mirror it onto a new drive (500gb), but the old one just wont initialize. It only clicks a few times then spins down.

Situation: I need to initialize a new blank drive for my S2. I successfully used instantcake to load the image. The problem is that instantcake contains a highly out of date version of the tivo software (somewhere around v5 IIRC) that does not natively support my linksys usb network adapter. So it needs to be connected to a phone line in order to update itself to the latest tivo software before the usb network adapter will come up again. Basically a very long and convoluted 'bootstrap' process.

Problem: I do not have a phone line of any kind. My parents have Uverse with a phone line that terminates in their RG. Basically not a 'real' phone line that terminates back to the CO. If I take my tivo over there will it connect on such a line? Or do I need to seek out one of my friends that might still have a copper POTS line and beg them to use it?

One more season of Justified...and then it's over

Announced this past week...disappointing.

Premiere works fine on TV but goes into loop restart when hooked to new projector

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 21:25
Hi all. Any help would be most appreciated.

I have a Tivo Premiere which I run into my harmon kardon AVR-1700 AV receiver and then into my sony kds-60a3000 HDTV. It works fine. I just got a new optoma HD131xe projector today, and when I hook the output HDMI from my AVR to the projector, my PS3 and xbox 360 work fine. My tivo does not. It restarts and shows the first screen that it normally shows when it restarts, but then it never gets past that point. The screen goes black for awhile, and then the initial reboot screen shows again. If I hook the HDMI output from the AVR back up to the sony HDTV, the tivo goes through its normal boot sequence and works fine on the HDTV.

I thought it might be some kind of a video format thing, so I changed the tivo to the auto-detect mode for video output. No dice- the same thing happens. Since the PS3 and xbox work fine on the HDTV and the projector, I assume that this has to be an issue with the tivo. Searched the net for answers and I cannot seem to find any.

Hopefully someone tells me that I'm moron and all I need to do is X to fix this.

No download of quickflix Tv or some movies ?

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 20:44

Do some of you have problems downloading some movies / TV programmes - within Quickflix ?

Ie, Today, I started downloading / requested Doctor who, series 3. I requested the 1st & 2hnd episodes.

within 20 minutes, the 2nd episode completed download. 10, 20, 30. 40 minutes later I still didn't have Episode 1. (i like to watch in order).

anyway, after the 4-5th try, its starting to download.

so far, i have not been able to download/watch DA VINCI CODE at all (ive tried over a dozen times over several weeks)

Additional HD3 or trade up to Roamio Plus

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 20:29
Should I replace my TiVo 3 HD with a Roamio Plus or just get add another TiVo HD3?

I am a two TV house for two people. In the living room area I have a TiVo HD3, Dell Zinio w/ Blu-ray for a dumb TV. In the other room I have a Xbox 360, MacMini 2012, and smart TV. I have the full Xfinity package. I travel a lot so do a high amount binge TV. Both rooms have Cat5E wiring. I do Amazon Prime movie and I subscribe to indieflix

The TiVo HD lifetime box has a 1TB hard drive but because it only has two tuners I occasionally miss recording a show. Finally got the money to purchase a Roamio Plus with lifetime and was planning on selling my TiVo on eBay.

After thinking about I think I just need an extra tuner. Getting another TiVo HD3 with lifetime is 1/3 the price of a Roamio Plus. Given that I have PC’s what is the upside of having 1 Roamio Plus over two TiVo HD3?

Mini output to 2 TV's - HDMI or Coax run?

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 18:44
I have a mini in my spare bedroom connected to my HD TV via a HDMI cable.
I also have a RCA -> coax adapter that sends the mini's video/audio over coax to my TV in the study (next room over). With the slide pro in the study, it works great EXCEPT now I bought a HDTV for the study and the signal coming over the coax is only 480i, so I need to find a way to use what I have and/or minimize buying stuff so I get a 1080 HD picture in my study.

What I"ve discovered is that I can buy 50' (guessing the run would be around 37') HDMI cable and a $29 HDMI splitter and split the HDMI coming out of the mini (on to the guest bd TV, one to the study TV)

I think there are also adapters/converters that I might use on both ends of the existing coax run to send HDMI signal over them but everything I've seen in that area is very expensive.

Has anyone tried anything like this? The HDMI splitter and 50' of HDMI cable should run me around $60 total, so far that's the most inexpensive route.

TiVo iOS App -- Metadata Issue(s)

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 15:46
Anyone else seeing this bug when using the iOS app? I was looking at one of my Season Passes - Two and a Half Men. Highlighted in the pic below you can see that Season 11, Episode 1 is a recording that exists in My Shows.

However, if I explore the show and look at the list of episodes and select the same show (season 11, Ep 1), the show is only available to watch now from Amazon.

I don't really have a good way to report this bug to TiVo so I thought I would post it here.

Troubleshooting - No Channels

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 15:45
Roamio Plus. In operation for approximately 2 months. Suddenly stopped working on all channels. Tivo suggest try new Cable card. Tried two different cable cards. Both pair correctly, but still no channels.

The CC conditional access screen shows correct info for:
CON: Yes EBCP: Yes VAL: V 0x*

Here is the interesting thing. there is no further data on the Conditional access screen. Tivo support says there should be additional info. Indeed , on my series three I do get a lot more info on that conditional access screen.

DVR diags show all tuners have tuned to proper channel number but there is no signal data - Freq, SN etc.

I have a truck roll for Sunday AM, but I am thinking I have a bad Tivo.

Any ideas?

Netflix on RCN cable

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 11:23
is there any work around to get the netflix app on TIVO premiere on RCN cable?

Tivo Cable box?

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 11:06
My Cable/Internet provider is RCN. It is great because they are a Tivo shop internally (the only DVR's they offer are Tivos), so they don't do things that fork over customer owned Tivo (no tuning adapters!!). What I didn't know until today is that even their non recorders are made by Tivo. I just got rid of my last SD TV and needed to upgrade the box so I called RCN and asked them to change it over. Imagine my surprise when the tech shows up with a little box (maybe 6" X12" X 2"--is that the Tivo Mini form factor?) with the Tivo logo on it, and a Tivo peanut remote to control it. The downside of this was that the box uses ethernet to connect to RCN so the tech had to install a MOCA bridge on my router (which meant I needed to shuffle the connections on my Router).

I'm trying to figure out how hackable this box is, does anyone else have one? I was able to turn on "network remote control", but of course the Tivo app won't control it without a different login. It has a USB port on the back, I'm wondering if I can get it to see a keyboard (although there isn't going to be a lot of text input to that box).

Ideas, suggestions are welcome -- this is mostly an academic project for me (there was a reason why that was the last SD TV in the house, it isn't watched all that much).

Mini Network Activity Lights

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 10:28
Got my Tivo Mini hooked up without a hitch last night. I have mine in the bedroom. All was well till it was lights out for the night. The connect and activity lights for the network connection are bright! Looked like lightning flashing in the dark against the wall....A couple of pieces of tape this morning fixed that problem! Otherwise no compaints at all. I think I'm gonna love the Mini!!!:up:

TiVo Roamio Pro with Lifetime for $699.99

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 10:23
I was recently given the opportunity to buy a Roamio for $699.99 with lifetime which was delivered and set up a few days ago.

I'm now selling Premiere and Stream with the hopes of paying for my new Roamio.

http://ebay.com/itm/321298323965 (Premiere XL4 with Lifetime)
http://ebay.com/itm/321294672163 (Stream)

I was given 3 codes and have so far only used one for the Roamio, but given I already have 2 mini's I doubt I'll need them. The codes are similar to those I have read about before (employee/retail discount) which seem to allow you to buy as many 4 minis at the lower price

TiVo Roamio DVR
$149.99 + $9.99/mo. service, 1-year commitment required
$499.99 (includes one-time service payment)
TiVo Roamio Plus DVR
$299.99 + $9.99/mo. service, 1-year commitment required
$599.99 (includes one-time service payment)
TiVo Roamio Pro DVR
$399.99 + $9.99/mo. service, 1-year commitment required
$699.99 (includes one-time service payment)
TiVo Mini
$49.99 + $5.99/mo. service, 1-year commitment required
$174.00 (includes one-time service payment)
TiVo Stream

By my calculations the Pro is the best choice as the Plus + harddrive option break even with the discount and I'd rather have the warranty intact (still $29.99 for 3-years)

So if you bought a Roamio Pro and 4 minis with lifetime from Tivo you would normally pay

Pro - $599.99
Service - $499.99
4 x Mini with lifetime (@249.98) - $999.92
Total = $2099.90 + Tax

With the code I used you would save $703.91

Pro - $399.99
Service - $300.00
4 x Mini with lifetime (@174.00) - $696.00
Total = $1395.99 + Tax

Even shopping around you save $473.91

Pro - $523.95 (amazon)
Service - $399.99 (existing user discount)
4 x mini with lifettime (@86 + 149.99) - $943.96
Total = $1867.90 + Tax

Right now I'm thinking I may give these codes to some family who have expressed an interest, but if there is legitimate interest here I may auction them off. I'm reluctant to put them on eBay as I don't think the average eBay buyer understands the value.

If anyone has a suggestion of how best to use them please feel free to comment. Obviously I don't want a hundred posts all saying "I'll take them off your hands" as I have family already lined up in that spot.
