Guide data seems to be getting worse!

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 20:11
Has anyone else noticed lately the growing inaccuracies in the guide data leading to missed or repeat recordings? I'm stunned to see how many shows I'm missing because the original air date is incorrect. Example: Property brothers on HGTV aired tonight at 9:00 PM EST and though the episode is marked as new, the original air date shows 01/12/15 instead of 02/18/15. This is happening across many different series/channels. I spoke with TiVo and honestly they seemed clueless and asked me to report each of these occurrences which is simply ridiculous as it would become a full time job.

I just can't imagine how Tribune Media which I believe supplies EPG data can get away with such poor and inaccurate data - though I'm sure they would simply pass blame on the content providers which may in fact be part of the equation. In any case, this is simply unacceptable as it defeats the whole point of set it and forget it...

Arrow 2/18/15 "The Return"

"That disguise wouldn't work even if you smeared greasepaint all over your face!" :D

4TB was formatted. Is it an issue?

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 19:52
But mistake, I formatted my 4TB with a Mac tower. Will that be a problem for upgrading a Roamio Plus?
Also I will need a Roamio drive connected to the Mac, is this correct?

20.4.6 no folders in my shows (option C) gone?

Just got the new release. What happened to the option to unfold the folders (believe it was option key C)

20.4.6 Bug: share browsing doesn't remember settings

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 18:12
Now that I can talk about it (if you know what I mean), I can point out an annoying bug that was introduced in 20.4.6

When you browse a computer share (using something like PyTiVo), it now no longer remembers your preference to turn on Groups. The moment you leave the share, it ALWAYS reverts back to turning off Groups. Using it without groups is beyond frustrating- everything you have organized by multiple levels of directories is, instead, just a never ending list of dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of videos.

At least it is easy to turn groups on now by just pressing "2" instead of having to go through the settings, but it is an unnecessary annoyance none-the-less. I certainly hope TiVo Inc. will fix this because has always worked properly and I can't imagine why they would have broken it and allowed this to remain unfixed in the release.

Beginning of the end of my Series 3s

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 17:44
I've had my Series 3 OLEDs since 2007 when I paid a pretty penny for them. Since then they are largely done their jobs without a lot of drama, although I did have to replace the caps in one a couple of years ago. A couple of months ago the second one stopped working and while it also had a bad cap, replacing it did not change the situation with the unit. It probably needs a more expertise than I have time to give it.

That leaves the other Series 3 on my aging home theater TV. All was fine except I had been having trouble since last year on Cablecard programming for my HBO subscription. I'd been using HBO GO on my Apple TV and other devices so I hadn't considered it a priority to fix, but when I tried to record the SNL 40 show, I discovered that NBC HD and a number of other channels were not working. I talked to the Comcast tech today and he noted that some of my cablecard settings back at Comcast were screwed up (not sure how that just happened) but then we discussed the HBO problem.

This has probably been discussed here but Comcast no longer supports the old single stream cable cards anymore (I knew they stopped providing them some time ago). Which means they told me they may not even be able to fix the programming situation since the system no longer officially supports it. I've been looking at doing a Roamio upgrade but there wasn't budget for it last year in my household. Things are better now and I'm thinking of pulling the trigger, but I don't like why I have to pull the trigger.

Just venting....getting a new Roamio plus Lifetime won't be cheap, but I think I have to step up to the 21st century sometime.

I was given a TCD746320 with a bad drive

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 15:39
I haven't owned a TiVo in many, many years, but one just dropped into my lap (figuratively). It was owned by someone who was moving out of the country, and he told the person who gave it to me that he thinks the hard drive is bad. I don't yet have a way to talk to the owner - he's busy moving - but hopefully when things settle down I can do so.

I don't know if it has a lifetime subscription or not. I haven't yet confirmed the drive is bad, but I'm assuming it is.

So if it is, and I get the drive replaced (I haven't searched yet but I'm assuming there's a known way of doing this) - do I need the previous owner to do anything to allow me to get it registered in my name?

Blank program description on single recordings in My Shows

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 14:36
I'd be shocked to learn that I am the only person experiencing this issue, and I absolutely hate to start a new thread, but I've searched high and low and cannot find any other reference to my issue...

Long time TiVo user, but simply cannot remember my old username on the Forums, so I'll have to re-register I guess.

I was on the priority upgrade list for 20.4.6 on my Roamio Pro. Since this pre-Superbowl upgrade, most (but not all) of my SINGLE recordings (not grouped in a folder) show absolutely no preview description in the right-most pane of My Shows. If I select the program, the proper description and channel image exists as before, but backup to the 2 or 3 pane My Shows view, and the description is gone. For example, if I recorded all of the major late-night talk shows, I could quickly scroll up and down in My Shows and see who the specific guests were and the like - but since the 20.4.6 update, any new recording has a blank black space where the description used to be. It's not 100% of the time, but maybe 90%... so there are a few programs that contain descriptions.

I tried to reboot the Roamio all together and low and behold, the missing descriptions and details came back for the programs which were previously missing them. A few days later, I notice that newly recorded programs were again missing these descriptions.

Any thoughts, folks? Thanks in advance.

Marvel's Agent Carter E07 OAD 2/17/2015 "SNAFU"

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 14:26
I have really been enjoying this limited series, so I'm disappointed to say that I really didn't think much of this episode. It's especially bad timing, being the penultimate episode, as ideally the show should be building to a great conclusion. Unfortunately I thought this episode instead just sucked all the momentum away.

Here's what I didn't like:

1. The episode took all of Peggy's agency away. She's been in control of her own actions and her initiative has driven the entire plot forward to date. It was inevitable that the SSR would get wise to Peggy and nab her, but the way the show handled it turned her into a victim. She spent almost the entire episode in conference rooms, usually handcuffed, and not especially in control of anything. The story happened to her, rather than the other way around. I thought that was jarring and unfortunate.

2. I commented last week that we had seen too much of the Russian psychiatrist, which meant that it was just intolerable spending even more time with him this week. The character just didn't work. I don't even like listening to him talk! And his hypnosis/mind control trick was a narrative crutch to avoid more cleverly plotting Leviathan's ability to influence things, and it just seemed silly (especially how easily it worked).

3. So Captain America's blood was a MacGuffin. That's OK, and not too surprising, but we sure did spend a lot of time on it throughout the series for it (apparently) not to matter at all.

4. I thought the show had been arcing the male SSR agents pretty well, taking them from chauvinist clods, to chauvinist investigators with some skill, to being respectful of what Peggy brings to the table -- but then they went back to being clods in this episode. I get that they would be suspicious of Peggy given what they had uncovered, but their intransigence about believing her -- at least lock the Russian guy in a windowless room; what's the harm? -- was silly.

5. The effect of dispatching Chief Dooley was kind of neat, OK; but the impregnable, can't-be-defeated heat vest was stupid in both concept and appearance. How convenient that it can't be cut off, disabled, tampered with, shut down, or turned off in any way! This is probably a more minor gripe, but I felt especially annoyed by it since I was annoyed by so much else already.

6. Poison gas? That's what Leviathan is after? Snooze.

I'm really hoping the show can pivot to a great conclusion. The other episodes have been handled so confidently that I'll choose to be optimistic. But I just thought this episode was a bad stumble with the finish line so close, so I'm concerned nonetheless.

Marvel's Agent Carter "Snafu" 2/17/2015

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 14:09
Aat least all of the lies are out in the open.

What was the original purpose for the vest o' death?

I cringe every time a tv good guy maneuvers himself to within striking range of a tv bad guy like the miscellaneous agent did with Dottie. Dude, you have a gun and you've been warned that she's a highly trained killer. Don't get within arm's length of her.

OnePass and the loss of favorite channels in By Time and By Channel

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 14:07
Just updated and was dismayed to find TiVo has made another brilliant design decision and removed the Favorite Channels option from By Time and By Channel under Manage Recordings. Thanks. Now I get to scroll through hundreds of channels instead of the ten or so I'm interested in.

I'm surprised it's still available in the guide.

Falls right in line with all the other things being complained about.

Can't download to ios App

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 13:34
I can't actually get any shows to download to the ios App with my Roamio Plus. First it states the download for even a half hour show will take an hour (estimated to be 4 minutes, but when it starts, it shows upwards of an hour), and then after a couple minutes the download always fails and tells me it copied relevant error info to the clipboard.

The helpful error?

Unable to create request (bad url?)

This happens both in home an out of home.

Any suggestions?

Gotham S01E16, "The Blind Fortune Teller" 2/16/2015

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 08:35
No thread yet?

Enjoyed this episode, I probably know less than a bunch of you on Batman Villain history, but we have The Joker now huh?

That kid from Shameless did a great "flip" from scared little kid to flat out psycho! And he did a good laugh

Curious who the Manager is that Fish is going to meet. That was a great scene where they sacrificed someone to show they mean business.

Re-Awaking Tivo Server on Laptop

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 06:47
I have recordings that have been transferred off my tivos onto a laptop which has Tivo Desktop Installed. When the laptop is initially booted up the folder is visible on the tivos however if the laptop is idle and goes to sleep when it is brought back up the folder is oftentimes not visible to the tivos. Short of going through a full reboot of the laptop is their a way to ensure the TiVo server also resumes on wakeup ?.

Video editing software

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 01:30
What would be a free or low cost programfor editing software. I only need it for manually cutting out commercials.
I have videoredo installed but on some programs the voice is out of sync after savingwithyout saving and reloading and using the adjust voice drop down box. I have to watch and adjust the setting a little at a time until I get it to sync.
I cah use video redo to do the none editing portion.

New Roamio user. A couple of Comcast related questions

Tue, 02/17/2015 - 23:08
We just got rid of our horrible Comcast DVR's and replaced them with a Roamio and a Mini. Loving it so far. Setup was far easier than i expected it to be. Two questions though:

We have HBO as part of our package and i can tune to it by typing in the channel number, but it doesn't show up in the guide. None of the HBO channels do. Is there a setting or something that I'm missing?

The second I'm pretty sure i know the answer to but ill go ahead and ask. With Comcast On Demand they disable fast forwarding on most of the content but with their DVR's you still have the ability to jump ahead (5 or 10 minutes can't remember). Is there a way to do this with the Tivo box? Not really that big of a deal but the wife wanted to watch a two hour show that she's already seen eh first hour of and without the forward jump you have to rewatch the entire first hour.

Overall we're loving our new setup! Thanks for any advice!

serial number mapped to motherboard?

Tue, 02/17/2015 - 22:19
So I purchased a Premiere off EBay with lifetime. It seems that the serial number on the back of the unit does not match the serial numbers within the TiVo menus. I assume the serial number is associated with the main board? My guess that someone swapped the guts of the unit? Thoughts?

The Flash - S01E14 "Fallout" (spoilers!)

Tue, 02/17/2015 - 21:09

I thought last week's was OK, but this one was much better. It really was a Firestorm episode more than the Flash. The characters were good, the plot moved along nicely.

I really liked how the quantum stabilizer suddenly made Firestorm look like... Firestorm. I didn't pick up on that last week, but when he put it on and merged, one of the primary designs of his costume became very evident.

Professor Stein's voice in his head was simple and effective. The merging/splitting was a nice effect. And, of course, he looks way cool when he's all fiery.

His suit is toast now. I wonder if they'll just pull out another identical one or alter it?

And Wells is turning out to be a nice surprise. I can't wait until next week to see what else is revealed. We know he has a yellow suit, we know he's capable of killing (though the two times we know for a fact he's done it, it was bad guys), but at the same time, it's also strongly implied he didn't kill Barry's mom. He's a fun character!

It'd be great to see more of Firestorm. I hope they bring him back at some point, but introduce him learning the transmutation powers he's supposed to have.

I won't bring up what the previews for next week showed (since even with a spoiler tag, it's frowned upon), but I can't wait! I'm really liking this show.

Stuck with Cox... Will Tivo solve problems or give me new ones?

Tue, 02/17/2015 - 20:52
I moved from the Seattle area to Scottsdale, AZ just over a month ago. For the time being I'm staying with family and paying for a DVR from Cox. I'll just say that the experience has been less than stellar. I'm on my third DVR from Cox and the problems continue. It just randomly stops recording. Well, it says it recorded but when I go to watch something it says "Recording Error". Of course this has happened with every episode of Better Call Saul so far... I'm about to throw this POS into the pool.

I have been A Dish Network customer for the past eight years. I never had a problem with them and I loved loved loved my Hopper DVR. I never once had to touch the thing. I never had to unplug it and it NEVER once missed a recording. It was by far the most rock solid DVR I have ever used. It also could hold 500 or so HD recordings compared to the 20 that this Cox DVR holds. I am really missing my Hopper.

With that said, I have always liked Tivo. As a custom installer I used to deal with them regularly and I owned a Series 2 back when I had basic cable before I went with Dish. I know they are an awesome DVR and I would love to buy one.

Here's my question. Since I am stuck with Cox in the Phoenix area and will need the dreaded tuning adapter, will this setup really get me back to the trouble free bliss that was my Dish Network setup? If I have a lamp timer on my tuning adapter to reboot it regularly can I expect to sit down and watch my favorite show after a long day and have it actually be there? I see so many complaints about the Cox tuning adapters and I don't want to spend the money on a Tivo if it's going to give me the same headaches I'm experiencing now due to Cox BS.
