On the last full day of Olympic competition, two of TiVo’s Top Moments went to a non-medal event, the Women’s Figure Skating Champions Gala, but a harrowing crash during the Men’s  Four-man Bobsled event claims the number one spot. Canada’s Justin Kripps, Jesse Lumsden, Cody Sorensen and Ben Coakwell all manage to walk away after a harrowing encounter going into one of the turns.  In only the second bobsleigh crash in over 700 runs during these Winter Olympics, members of Canada 3 flip onto their backs and then complete the Continue Reading

The top TiVo moment of last night’s broadcast was USA’s Mikaela Shiffrin, hurtling down the course to become the youngest skier, at age 18, to win Olympic gold in the Women’s Slalom. She recovered from a near crash in the final moments of the run, and finished an exciting race to huge cheers from her family and friends. Her emotions were a mix of pure joy and disbelief as she exclaimed “I almost fell over.” The second and fourth top moments featured the Russian Short Track star, Victor Ahn’s  gold Continue Reading

Thu, 02/20/2014 - 18:54
What do you think of when you hear “Generation Y”? Social Media comes to mind, technology, a slew of pop artists… however you look at it, Generation Y is associated with the New. In its 2013 Millennial Video Entertainment survey, however, TiVo found that regardless of how they are consuming video, Millennials’ – the name given to the people born between the early 1980s to the early 2000s, or ‘Generation Y’ – preferred traditional TV series as their content of choice over full length movies, live events or music videos. Continue Reading

An underdog makes the podium at the last second and a teenager places 5th in her Olympic debut. Team USA had a lot to be excited about regardless of not achieving Gold in last night’s primetime coverage of the 22nd Sochi Winter Olympics. The show began with Men’s Snowboard Cross, where Americans met 27 year old Alex Deibold, who spent the Vancouver Winter Olympics waxing Team USA’s snowboards. In Sochi, he passed all of his qualifying rounds placing 3rd, and when it came to the finals there was no difference Continue Reading

Jimmy Fallon First “Tonight Show” – Top Moments

Tue, 02/18/2014 - 13:00
We had more than just “Ordinary Love” for Jimmy Fallon last night, as he hosted his first episode of The Tonight Show. It started off with a number of well-known celebrities dumping bills – and pennies – on his desk, continued with a little hip-hop history courtesy of Will Smith, and ended with a performance by U2 and The Roots. All in all, the sequence of events very much embodied how the new NBC late night host plans on running his show: New host, Old show. The Tonight Show is Continue Reading

It was a night for the record books as the most elegant and spectacular couples danced their way into our hearts and onto the podium in the Figure Skating – Ice Dance Free Dance.  The mesmerizing event dominated the night of viewership as top couples from the USA, Canada and Russia skated their hearts out to secure a spot on the podium.  Little did they realize that history was in the making.  Not to be outshined, the Bobsleigh Two-man Heat 4 was a nail-biter, leaving hearts pounding as not even Continue Reading

Mon, 02/17/2014 - 09:48
Sunday night’s NBC coverage of the Winter Olympic Games from Sochi ran a full four hours and focused on several events where competitors from the USA again experienced thrills of victory or agonies of defeat—fortunately focusing more on the thrills than the agonies. Last night’s Top Moment was taken by an exciting and surprising Silver-Medal-Winning finish in the Alpine Skiing Men’s Super-G by Team USA’s Andrew Weibrecht. Though Weibrecht’s performance was less highly anticipated than those of teammates Bode Miller and Ted Ligety, Weibrecht beat them both in the end, Continue Reading

A TV night of many entertaining storylines and matchups was dominated by Women’s Alpine Skiing. At the halfway point of the 22nd Sochi Winter Olympics, multiple rivalries started to become prevalent. From Men’s Hockey with an overtime matchup of the United States vs Russia to Men’s Short Track, where an adopted Russian racer out performed his former country, but nothing seemed to bring in more views than the Women’s Alpine Skiing – Super-G which once again put Austria and the United States rivalry on center stage. It was a night of firsts at 22nd Sochi Winter Olympics – first woman to ever anchor NBC’s primetime coverage, Meredith Vieira; first Olympic gold medal for Japan in Men’s Figure Skating, Yuzuru Hanyu – but for U.S. viewers the focus was on the end of an era.  At the age 36, this will undoubtedly be Bode Miller’s final Olympics and Ted Ligety will be 33 when the torch is lit in PyeongChang South Korea in 2018. Three of TiVo’s Top Moments centered on Miller and Ligety’s valiant efforts in Continue Reading

Last night marked the start of the much anticipated Men’s Figure Skating program, and fittingly, four of the five TiVo Top Moments were from this drama-filled event. The Top Moment was during the performance of Jeremy Abbott, US Figure Skating champion. Abbott took a nasty fall while attempting a quadruple toe loop in the Men’s Figure Skating Short Program. Instead of calling it quits, he continued to skate and finished his routine brilliantly. Abbott also nabbed the #3 Top Moment a few minutes later in the telecast as he looked Continue Reading

Last night’s Winter Olympics Top Moments were a full house of Figure Skating Pairs Free Skating and Women’s Alpine Skiing Downhill Finals. The Free Program was night #2 of the Pairs Free Skating event ; the Russians placed a somewhat surprising first and second after a disappointing third-place performance by Savchenko / Szolkowy of Germany that included two falls. The American team of Castelli and Shnapir showed well; their solid performance earned them a 9th place finish. The Women’s Downhill ended in a surprise tie for the Gold: American Julia Continue Reading

L’Amour

Wed, 02/12/2014 - 12:30
Romance means different things to different people. This Valentine’s Day, your best bet is to figure out what it means to your special someone and make a grand gesture. The grand gesture makes up for the silly fights, the less-than-inspired date nights, and telling her she’s acting like her mother—it’s also what makes a great romantic movie. The grand gesture is the scene you remember years later, like Jake presenting Samantha with a birthday cake in “Sixteen Candles” or Cindy jumping on the back of Ronald’s lawnmower in “Can’t Buy Continue Reading

Last night’s Top Moments were all about the pipe—the Men’s Snowboard Halfpipe competition, that is. The highly-anticipated event ended in disappointment for Team USA’s Shaun White: After foregoing his spot in the Snowboard Men’s Slopestyle in order to focus on the quest of a Gold hat trick in the Snowboard Men’s Halfpipe, White suffered a disappointing loss to Russian-born Iouri Podladtchikov, a/k/a/ “I-Pod.” White had scored a 95.75 with a fabulous second qualifying run, but in the finals he struggled on a slushy halfpipe, ultimately yielding Gold to I-Pod and Continue Reading
