The Bottle Episode: If I could save a show in a bottle…

Fri, 03/22/2013 - 17:46
Sometimes less is more and sometimes that rule applies to TV shows. In TV, when an episode takes the characters in a show and places them in a restricted setting that uses as few non-regular characters as possible, it’s called a “bottle episode”. Stripping characters down (metaphorically, of course) to a single location and having an episode rely heavily on the dialogue instead of action or location changes has produced some great episodes of our favorite shows over the years and we’ve grouped them all together for you in this Continue Reading

There are a number of basketball-friendly movies and a game brought to you by TiVo that we think can help calm your nerves during the Big Dance. Between the catchy theme song and the (very literally) animated characters, Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny made Space Jam the light-hearted movie that doesn’t get old. Celebrating “Movie MacGuffins”

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 18:53
What’s in Marsellus Wallace’s briefcase? What are the specific powers of the Necronomicon? What’s so special about Pee-Wee’s bike? At the end of the day, the answers to each of these questions doesn’t matter because all three of these objects are merely MacGuffins. What’s a MacGuffin? Well sometimes to drive a story forward, writers invent an object that the characters can covet and chase after thus moving the plot ahead and putting the characters into situations they might otherwise not have gotten themselves into. Still confused? Don’t be! This week, Continue Reading

TV’s Modern Day Treasure Hunters Strike It Rich With Viewers

Sat, 03/02/2013 - 09:00
We’ve heard of bargaining and thrifting, but the TV trend at the moment is all about competitive storage hunting. This is the basis of Storage Wars, a show that documents a group of people as they make their living off of the contents discovered in abandoned storage lockers. Although these auctions are competitive and there is no guarantee that units hold anything of value, these treasure hunters keep coming back for the chance to find something rare hidden among all the junk. After a few episodes you’ll be left intrigued Continue Reading

When the party gets out of hand, it’s time to just “Party Down”

Fri, 03/01/2013 - 14:02
You know the story: somebody’s parents are out of town so the kids decide to have a party. Said party goes from a few close friends and some music to something Katy Perry would sing about. It’s a formula for a visit from the cops…and some pretty great movies. With this week’s release of “21 and Over” chronicling a med student’s overzealous 21st birthday celebration the night before his finals, it seemed like a great time to take a look at some of our favorite parties that got a little Continue Reading

Tue, 02/26/2013 - 12:30
The NHL lockout compromised half of our hockey season this year. For those of us who had an empty place in our hearts throughout the hiatus, the best way to fill it was with a few hockey classics! Some of the first movies that come to mind are the three in the The Mighty Ducks trilogy. Who can forget Coach Bombay and team, quacking their way into our hearts? Goldberg’s one-liners and rambling smack talk are timelessly hilarious.  And when Herb Brooks’ team finally learns to get along in Miracle Continue Reading

Mon, 02/25/2013 - 19:00
According to TiVo audience research measurement data from last night’s 85th annual Academy Awards, TiVo users were moved by heartfelt acceptance speeches, like that from Christoph Waltz, and the musical montages. Perhaps due to the long telecast, TiVo’s top five moments all occurred in the first 45 minutes of the show. Also, three of the top five moments were host Seth MacFarlane’s skits or jokes. That’s three more than last year’s show host, Billy Crystal, had in TiVo’s 2012 top five moments (see the 2012 top moments here)! Interestingly enough, Continue Reading
