Celebrating “Movie MacGuffins”

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 18:53
What’s in Marsellus Wallace’s briefcase? What are the specific powers of the Necronomicon? What’s so special about Pee-Wee’s bike? At the end of the day, the answers to each of these questions doesn’t matter because all three of these objects are merely MacGuffins. What’s a MacGuffin? Well sometimes to drive a story forward, writers invent an object that the characters can covet and chase after thus moving the plot ahead and putting the characters into situations they might otherwise not have gotten themselves into. Still confused? Don’t be! This week, Continue Reading

TV’s Modern Day Treasure Hunters Strike It Rich With Viewers

Sat, 03/02/2013 - 09:00
We’ve heard of bargaining and thrifting, but the TV trend at the moment is all about competitive storage hunting. This is the basis of Storage Wars, a show that documents a group of people as they make their living off of the contents discovered in abandoned storage lockers. Although these auctions are competitive and there is no guarantee that units hold anything of value, these treasure hunters keep coming back for the chance to find something rare hidden among all the junk. After a few episodes you’ll be left intrigued Continue Reading

When the party gets out of hand, it’s time to just “Party Down”

Fri, 03/01/2013 - 14:02
You know the story: somebody’s parents are out of town so the kids decide to have a party. Said party goes from a few close friends and some music to something Katy Perry would sing about. It’s a formula for a visit from the cops…and some pretty great movies. With this week’s release of “21 and Over” chronicling a med student’s overzealous 21st birthday celebration the night before his finals, it seemed like a great time to take a look at some of our favorite parties that got a little Continue Reading

Hockey Lovers, Unite!

Tue, 02/26/2013 - 12:30
The NHL lockout compromised half of our hockey season this year. For those of us who had an empty place in our hearts throughout the hiatus, the best way to fill it was with a few hockey classics! Some of the first movies that come to mind are the three in the The Mighty Ducks trilogy. Who can forget Coach Bombay and team, quacking their way into our hearts? Goldberg’s one-liners and rambling smack talk are timelessly hilarious.  And when Herb Brooks’ team finally learns to get along in Miracle Continue Reading

TiVo’s Most Watched Oscar Moments Of The Night!

Mon, 02/25/2013 - 19:00
According to TiVo audience research measurement data from last night’s 85th annual Academy Awards, TiVo users were moved by heartfelt acceptance speeches, like that from Christoph Waltz, and the musical montages. Perhaps due to the long telecast, TiVo’s top five moments all occurred in the first 45 minutes of the show. Also, three of the top five moments were host Seth MacFarlane’s skits or jokes. That’s three more than last year’s show host, Billy Crystal, had in TiVo’s 2012 top five moments (see the 2012 top moments here)! Interestingly enough, Continue Reading

Thu, 02/21/2013 - 17:17
While some of the country is still freezing, things are definitely starting to heat up in Hollywood. Pilot season is in full swing so next season’s new shows are already getting ready to entertain you. But if those pilots are going to find a home in the schedule some of this year’s shows might have to give up their time slots. While nobody’s certain which shows won’t have a seat when the music stops in a few months, it’s never too early to start campaigning to keep our favorites.   Continue Reading

Argo & Beyond – the 85th Academy Awards!

Wed, 02/20/2013 - 12:16
With wins from The Golden Globes, the Producers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild, all eyes are on Ben Affleck’s Argo. Many people have been surprised by Argo‘s sweep at all of the awards shows, in part because of Ben Affleck’s Academy snub for Best Director. People didn’t forget that Argo was an excellent film; it was just overshadowed by everything else that was released in the early winter of 2012 like Lincoln, Life of Pi, Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook. Affleck was recently honored by the Directors Continue Reading

Fri, 02/15/2013 - 10:43
No need to spy on the family next door anymore, or wonder what’s going on in your neighborhood at all. These families put enough drama on the small screen for all of us. Go ahead and gossip, it’s encouraged. There is always something happening in the Duggar household. Always. This family has too many kids to name, but we’ll go ahead and do it anyway: Josie, Jordyn-Grace, Jennifer, Johannah-Faith, Jackson, Justin, James, Jason, Jeremiah, Jedidiah, Joy-Anna, Josiah, Joseph, Jinger, Jessa, Jill, John-David, Jana, and Joshua. In that order. There’s a Continue Reading

TiVo Collections: Swimsuit Edition

Thu, 02/14/2013 - 09:00
Even though Punxsutawney Phil didn’t see his shadow and predicted an early spring, it feels like Mother Nature didn’t get the memo in most of the nation. What better way to warm up when it’s cold outside than by looking ahead to bikini season. Taking the hint from our friends at Sports Illustrated (call us, Kate!), we thought it would be fun to highlight some of the most famous bikinis in cinematic history. (Don’t let anyone ever tell you that we don’t enjoy our jobs). The history of the bikini Continue Reading
