Smartphones: Android vs. iPhone!

9 hours 46 min ago
By: Akiko Iwamizu TiVo collected data from an online survey that TiVo conducted in June 2014 among 2,025 individuals in the U.S. between the ages of 13 and 74. The sample of respondents was balanced in age, gender, and income to roughly mirror the demographic spread of the 2013 census figures published by the US Government. Through this survey, TiVo was able to learn about and analyze each individual’s adoption and usage of mobile technology. What TiVo found was that 80% of US residents have a smartphone, and that both Apple® Continue Reading

TiVo Research Reveals Dramatic Increase in Multitasking During TV Viewing

Thu, 10/16/2014 - 09:00
Today TiVo revealed results from its Second Annual TiVo Multitasking and Social TV Survey. The results indicate a dramatic increase in multitasking during TV viewing: over half of the 856 survey respondents reported multitasking every time or almost every time they watch TV (51 percent); compared to just over one third (36 percent) in last year’s survey. Though TV multitasking may be on the increase, viewers also report an increase in TV viewing as the primary focus: 47 percent of respondents’ total TV time is spent with their primary attention Continue Reading

Director’s Chair: David Fincher

Thu, 10/02/2014 - 12:49
I usually make a point not to see the movie adaptation of a book I’ve already read (doing so usually just leads to disappointment, and after watching the series finale of Dexter I’ve had enough of that in my life). However, I am so excited to see David Fincher’s movie adaptation of Gone Girl that it will be the first film I see in a theater since March. It takes more than a pretty face and a catchy soundtrack to entice this moviegoer, and I have a feeling that Gone Continue Reading

TV Series Studied in School

Sat, 09/20/2014 - 00:55
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver recently covered the topic of student debt, which has become a huge burden for many in the United States. According to a January article in the Huffington Post, “The population [of U.S. citizens] with student loans is actually greater than the entire population of Canada, Poland, North Korea, Australia and more than 200 other countries.” (I want to start chanting “we’re number one,” but maybe this isn’t the time or the place.) Colleges are expensive, sure, but think of what you’re getting in return: Continue Reading

The Leftovers

Fri, 09/05/2014 - 12:41
Sundays are the perfect time to do those things that you’ve been meaning to do. A productive person uses this free time to do chores, such as laundry or gardening. I, on the other hand, decided that last Sunday was a good time to binge-watch HBO’s The Leftovers. The general premise of the series is that two percent of the world’s population disappeared three years ago. So when we’re introduced to all the characters, they’re still coping with the disappearances of their loved ones and trying to figure out what Continue Reading

Watching TV with Someone Smart is the Worst

Thu, 09/04/2014 - 15:42
Most people don’t know this, but when you start watching a new TV show, you enter into an implicit agreement. For the show’s part, it is agreeing to provide entertainment. This includes interesting characters and a compelling story. For your part, you are agreeing to accept the world created in the series. So in a series, if 2+2=5, then so be it. I accept that. And by accepting a show’s logic, I open myself up to enjoying that show. Most people abide by this unspoken agreement, but I’ve noticed a Continue Reading

No, it’s not a bad gig when you need to go onto the Red Carpet at the Emmy® Awards for work.  This year, we decided that we wanted to know what the stars were watching on their own DVRs.  We talked to everyone we could, including Matt LeBlanc, William H. Macy, and “Game of Thrones” creator George R.R. Martin. Yep, it was awesome.  Check out @TiVo on Twitter and Instagram to see all of the folks we managed to corral for a moment or two in the madness.   So, Continue Reading

Seven Deadly Sins

Thu, 08/21/2014 - 02:08
Showtime recently premiered a new series about the seven deadly sins. For those of you not in the know, these include lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. As evidenced by the show’s first episode on gluttony, these sins can get pretty heavy (pun intended). And I for one do not have it in me to worry about one more serious issue. So I’ve decided that when it comes to this whole eternal damnation thing, I’ll just keep a positive attitude. As David Bowie sings in Labyrinth…“It’s only forever, not Continue Reading
