What to Watch This Week – March 22nd – March 29th

Sat, 03/21/2015 - 11:00
Looking for something new to record or stream? Here’s what we’re recommending you watch this week: Sunday, March 22nd: The Last Man on Earth (FOX): There’s still time to get into this quirky comedy that’s asking questions about marriage, fidelity and toilet pools in an apocalyptic world. Neighbors With Benefits (A&E): A reality show about married couples who are “in the lifestyle”; but, if you’re looking for better production values and a better soundtrack on the same topic, check out 2008’s “Swingtown” instead. Monday, March 23rd: Teen Mom (MTV): Entering its 11th season, this MTV show Continue Reading

TiVo at SXSW – by TiVo Chief Design Officer Margret Schmidt

Mon, 03/16/2015 - 17:19
I spent my “Pi Day of the Century” in Austin, Texas at the South by Southwest® Interactive Festival.*  It was my first time speaking at SXSW — and my first time attending!  My talk was “Consumer Data: the Good, the Bad, the Not-So-Ugly.” The discussion started with defining what it means to be a designer. As a designer, we are advocates for the consumer and empathize deeply with them. It is our job to delicately balance the needs of the consumer, the needs of the business, and technical constraints, with Continue Reading

What to Watch This Week: March 15th – March 21st

Sat, 03/14/2015 - 12:50
Looking for something new to record or stream? Here’s what we’re recommending you watch this week: Sunday, March 15th:  NCAA Basketball Championship Selection Show (CBS): An hour of cameras pointed at basketball teams all waiting with baited breath to find out if they get the chance to win a trip to one of America’s premiere vacation destinations, Indianapolis. The Royals (E!): It may be terrible or it may be amazing. Either way, it’s the biggest dose of Elizabeth Hurley we’ve gotten since she played a robot that seduced Mike Myers in 1997. Monday, March Continue Reading

High School Heartbreak

Thu, 03/12/2015 - 16:48
When Emily Brontë wrote Wuthering Heights, she probably wasn’t anticipating that it would be adapted into a teen movie. It would be great to get her thoughts on the project, but since she died in 1848, and Ghost Whisperer only exists in reruns, we’ll just have to assume she’s pleased as punch that her only novel has been adapted for Lifetime’s Wuthering High School. I love teen dramas, but as a certified teen drama connoisseur, I simply won’t be able to give this film two thumbs up unless the following Continue Reading

We can’t wait to find out which factory you came from, Julie! Night of Too Many Stars (Comedy Central): All your favorite funny people come together for a good cause. Watch as Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and all their friend unite to help fight Continue Reading

Better Call Jimmy! No Really, You Can.

Wed, 03/04/2015 - 11:38
One of the greatest things about TiVo is it’s ability to pause a show to give you a glimpse of something you might have otherwise missed. It didn’t take long for show creators to start adding in Easter Eggs that only viewers with this magical ability would be able to find; but in the last few years, some have taken it a bit further. For years, whenever a character in a movie or TV show mentioned a phone number, they used the semi-fictional “555” telephone exchange (with a few, notable exceptions). But Continue Reading

Looking for something new to record or stream? Here’s what we’re recommending you watch this week: Sunday, March 1st: Once Upon a Time (ABC): Spoiler Alert: Literally everyone is related to everyone else in some way or another. It’s what keeps the show going. Well, that and the deep Disney bench. Last Man on Earth (FOX): As long as one of these men is MacGruber, we’re sold. Actually, from what we hear, this is one to watch! Secrets and Lies (ABC): Oh how the Ryan Phillippe has fallen. Monday, March 2nd: The Following (FOX): Kevin Bacon’s Continue Reading

Make sure you have plenty of supplies to last the weekend. Suggestions include at least one bottle of Southern Comfort and this recipe for bona fide southern Continue Reading

The Things We Do for Love (and Money)

Wed, 02/25/2015 - 12:52
If you’ve ever traveled internationally with your spouse, then you know that the Beatles got it wrong when they sang “all you need is love.” Love is nice, but a translator is better. International travel is stressful. Navigating new metro systems and adapting to foreign customs can be a lot to deal with for any couple, which is why I’ve always thought it was a mistake for couples to compete together on The Amazing Race. It’s hard enough deciding who gets to control the remote, or whose family to visit Continue Reading

TiVo’s Top Moments for the 2015 Grammy Awards

Mon, 02/09/2015 - 11:32
Performances dominated a very emotive Grammy Awards ceremony last night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. From President Obama encouraging musical artists to use their influence to speak out against rape and domestic violence, to Pharrell and Prince’s acknowledging the #BlackLivesMatter movement, the typically buoyant ceremony had some very serious undertones. But in the end, musical performance prevailed, as evidenced by TiVo’s Top Five Moments for the 57th Annual Grammy Awards:   8:49pm – Madonna’s performance of “Living for Love” ranks as TiVo’s Top Moment of the 2015 Continue Reading

How Lowe Can You Go?

Tue, 02/03/2015 - 18:11
Lately it seems that every time I turn on the TV, I’m treated to a new, odd version of Rob Lowe. So far I’ve seen Scrawny Arms Rob Lowe, Crazy Hair Rob Lowe, and Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe. The commercials are cute, but as a life-long fan of the Brat Pack, I know there’s much more Lowe to know. Lowe’s first film role was as Sodapop Curtis in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders. His costars included Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, and Lowe’s childhood friend, Emilio Estevez. Continue Reading

XLIX: Year of the #EmotionBowl

Mon, 02/02/2015 - 09:09
Emotions run high on the field and in commercials, but comedy is still king Today we announced TiVo’s top commercials and moments from Super Bowl® XLIX, and while “Deflategate” may have dominated much of the talk leading up to the game, the recurring theme of comedy lost no air – despite the emotional spots attracting attention. This year there were more serious, dramatic and sentimental spots than in previous Super Bowl broadcasts – including Budweiser’s ‘Lost Dog’ that won the top spot – but overall, comedy came through again with Continue Reading

Best Friends Forever

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 17:09
It’s been about two weeks since Netflix starting streaming every episode of Friends, and about two minutes since I’ve watched an episode of Friends. All this Friends watching has convinced me of two things. One, I really have no excuse for not starting on those New Year’s resolutions, and two, my own friends could really bring more to the table. Don’t get me wrong, I love my friends, they’re great—but none of them are giving me free samples from Ralph Lauren, and not one of them has locked themselves in Continue Reading
