I feel like one day Lena can totally hit the jackpot, either with a TV series or a movie, but so far, her stuff doesn't really add up.

Lena Dunham to me always seems like one of those celebrities that the Hollywood insiders really want to make it, but she just doesn't translate to most people. And none of the characters on this show make me want to come back and watch them. They are pretentious and annoying and not in a good or entertaining way. But I don't think the show speaks to 50 something males like me. I'm certainly not a Brooklyn hipster (and boy my old Borough might be the most pretentious place to live in America, if you believe TV, it's no longer the middle class enclave it was when i was growing up). I tried watching it a few times for perhaps some gratuitous nudity...but, well there's Lena Dunham.

I stopped watching Girls after a few episodes in the 2nd season. I struggled through the first season and almost stopped about halfway through, then it started getting a little better so I stuck around to the end of the season. I started into the second season and then asked myself, "What valid reason do I have for wasting my time with this show?" I couldn't come up with a reasonable answer so I stopped watching it. There is no way in Hell this show should be nominated for any type of awards.

I haven't subscribed to Showtime in forever so I get my shows via torrents. What's funny is that the first episodes of all three shows were available a week earlier than they actually aired. I was expecting to download the 2nd episodes of each of them on Monday only to find that they aren't available yet.

True Detective looks like a winner. Dark and gritty with a touch of Hannibal. I started another thread to discuss it.

Episodes is one of the best comedies ever made, IMO. VERY tight and sharp writing and performances. Also, hilarious :)

Do yourself a favor and catch up on Episodes. You will not regret it.

I'm with you on Girls...it kept getting these great reviews so I stayed with it for almost the whole first season. It is utter crap.

Episodes fly by like it's 5 minutes...the season is usually very short as well...worst case, you have something to watch during the summer!

I'm saving Continuum and True Detectives for the summer (or until I hear that True Detectives is not worth watching).

I've never seen any episodes of it, but that sounds a lot like the beloved show "Breaking Bad". A show about a drug dealer? Yes, I watch plenty of shows with "bad" characters (Sopranos, etc., but actually I still haven't watched the last half of the last season, I liked it but was never as enthralled as everyone else)..

Is Cougar Town on Netflix streaming or anything else? I have actually been recording/slowly watching the reruns of the cable-original season that were rerun again before the new season, but if they were on streaming (hopefully uncut), I'd be tempted to do a month of netflix and gorge on it and various other shows.

Breaking bad was the exact OPPOSITE of girls. The fact that he was a drug dealer was juxtaposed with the fact that he started doing it to support his family. The entire series you end up asking yourself, why am I rooting for this guy? He's supposed to be BAD!

Girls just continuously has women that are stuck up and arrogant with nothing like virtuous qualitys that would make you want to forgive the pretentiousness. It would be different if any of the main characters had anything like a sympathetic cause.

I agree with mattick (Breaking Bad) and you (Girls). In the first case, I found myself saying "Why do I even care about a guy who thinks it's ok to MAKE and sell drugs, even to support his family? And becomes ruthless doing so. And I realized I just didn't. If I met someone like that in real life, I'd have ZERO sympathy. In the second, the girls on Girls, they are pretentious, self centered and annoying. Even in the very first episode (I think) when Lena has lunch with her parents, and they try to explain to her about life, she wants nothing to do with it. And it goes on and on like that, at least as long as I watched, where these girls could do pretty much anything they wanted with no recourse. And they all felt this sense of entitlement. But again, I admit, I am of a different generation, and maybe I just don't "get it".

From what I watched of that night, The Good Wife was awesome! The Springsteen soundtrack was just the icing on the cake. If that show was on cable, and they threw in a few curse words and a wee bit of nudity, they'd be taking about The Good Wife the same way they talk about Mad Men or Breaking Bad. But since it's network, it CAN'T be as good. That's the critic's rules these days.

Cougar Town has moved to TBS. One full season so far and a new season just started a week or so ago. Still the same. If you liked it before, nothing has changed.

As for Breaking Bad, there were plenty of good people on it. Hank, Junior, Gomez...and even the bad lead had some redeeming qualities for long periods of time and even did something decent at the end. Not the same as Girls AT ALL.

Plus, Breaking Bad and Mad Men (as far as I know about Mad Men) don't have curse words or nudity.

This is all correct, except it should read TBS not FX.

They do, but not to the extent that they drool over Mad Men, Breaking Bad and some other cable shows. I think it's as good as any of them, and better than most.

No nudity, definitely curse words (depending on how you define a curse word). Certainly words that aren't said on Primetime Network TV.

I'm not going to debate good characters or bad characters or good characters gone bad or whatever. Here's my take...

Breaking Bad was incredibly enjoyable to watch. Great writing, characters you had feelings about and cared about, you wanted to see what happened next, yada yada.

Girls was not fun to watch. I found myself not caring about any of them, they were self-centered, pretentious and the stories were barely legible (what's the visual equivalent of illegible?). TV is supposed to be enjoyable to watch, fun to watch. When it becomes a chore, or when you continually ask yourself, "Why am I watching this?", it's time to stop. And this is not just Girls, but any/all shows.

I know several younger females who love this show. Clearly there is an audience for it. It just ain't me.

Given Lena has gotten a renewal for the third season after one (OK two) showings of season 2, I would say she is hitting the jackpot.

Thanks to Apatow she is also getting a lot of guest stars. A lot of other shows/producers cannot say this.
