upgrading a Series 3 drive with a WD expander drive?

I have a lifetime Series 3 (TCD652160) that I want to possibly upgrade its hard drive for more storage. I have upgraded another Series 3 in the past so am familiar with how its done. I have an image for this model, a PC and will use WinMFS as before.

I might be able to get a hold of some WD DVR expanders for pretty cheap. 1TB and 500GB models specifically. Can these simply be cracked open and their hard drives pulled to then be used as the upgrades in this TiVO?

You really ought to put a 2TB in there.

But as far as I know, the drives in those expanders are just hard drives, and should probably work okay.

But are these the TiVo specific eSATA external WD DVR extender drives, that came with a TiVo logo on the box, or the USB-only generic externals?

Because the TiVo specific ones are kind of pricey when new, so should bring a good used price in the right market.

And you can put the profit towards a 2TB.
