If I change a hard drive in a Tivo box, how does Tivo know that the "unit" is the same for my monthly subscription or the lifetime, whichever is appropriate? I have two Series 2 units at 6.95 per month, and I would hate to lose that rate, if I change out the hard drives.

That info is tied to the motherboard, not the hard drive.

Thank you. I guess if you had a lifetime subscription, you never want to have to change the motherboard! :)

More accurately, the subscription is for the TSN, which is stored on the Crypto Chip of the main board, and that is referenced to the subscription status on the TiVo servers.

So long as you can keep that board running, or move the crypto chip to an operable board, its subscription status can be retained.
