I currently have been living with a HR10-250 for quite some time. I'm actually quite happy with it, except for the lack of (new) HD content. I've been running with TivoWebPlus to manage it, and have been backing it up with mfs_ftp.tcl to cope with the odd disk failure and to make the odd DVD for long trips with my young son whose shows aren't always available on DVD. I also enjoy hacking together new programs to run on it...

Assuming I'm happy with the TiVo user interface, how many of these features would I miss if I upgraded to the THR-22?

The lack of being able to get programs in or out is an absolute killer. You'd probably be happier with a hacked s3 or HD with OTA and (maybe) cable.

EDITED TO ADD: If you are tempted to move to a DirecTV non-Tivo receiver, I'd urge you to ask a friend who has one if you could spend some time with it. Try it out extensively.

You would miss all of those "hack" features, except it does have Ethernet. You can use something like a Hauppauge PVR device to capture the output of the THR22 and record to DVD on a PC or Mac, but that isn't the same thing. Otherwise the THR22 behaves much like an HR10-250. I had hacked my HR10 but don't really miss it with the THR22. I also have an HR44 which I like better, but my wife prefers the TiVo UI.

Unless you are really addicted to the TiVo UI, I would recommend a Genie (HR44/HR34) instead of the THR22. It has more features, is faster and doesn't incur the monthly TiVo fee. Unlike the THR22, you can use the Genie with the various program sharing options including downloading to a portable device (Genie GO purchase required), but not burning to DVD (without a capture device.)

So no way to download content, unlike other newer TiVos? Nobody's been able to hack it to enable this functionality, unlike the HR10s? (As opposed to the old polite nobody's hacking the TiVos fiction that existed on some forums for a while, right?)

    That's unfortunate...

No way to download content. The other DirecTV DVRs have some supported streaming and copy-to-portable-device functionality, but not the THR22. If anyone has figured out how to hack the DirecTV DVRs, I haven't heard of it.
