Does anyone know when the Tivo stream service is going to be released? Thanks for any help.
The Stream box should be out in the fall sometime.
The stream boxes are currently in use by at least some cable companies that offer Tivos as their DVR. Hopefully they will be available to us common folk soon.
The Stream is not out for anyone... The Preview (IP Box like) is out
Guess I don't know the difference. My cable company offers a non-DVR Tivo add-on box that allows streaming from the Premiere. How is that different?
It is the Tivo Preview.. It is basically a Tivo without a hard drive. It connects to a TV like a High Def HD, allows you to watch live TV and stream from your main TiVo Box
Just to make sure everyone's on the same page...
The Stream (unreleased) is for streaming [edit: and sideloading] to iDevices. Coming in the fall.
The IP STB (unnamed - unreleased) is for streaming to TVs. It has no tuners or cablecard slot. Strictly a Tivo extender. Coming in the fall, hopefully.
The Preview (available from cable partners) is a full-blown STB with a tuner and cablecard slot. It functions whether there is a Tivo DVR present or not. It can pull streams from a Tivo, because it's basically a Tivo without a hard drive, but it's not the same thing as the IP box.
...and sideloading, right? That's what I'm more interested in...
So The Stream is only for streaming to iDevices? What if I'm on vacation and want to watch something off of Tivo from my PC laptop?
You have to be on your network... it does not offload video over the internet
Yes and sideloading.
Tivo has PC software on their site you can use to transfer (sideload) it to your laptop before you go.
