this may seem a bit odd to most, but I have a failed tivo drive for tivo series 3 TCD648250B - can I pop in a working drive from a TCD652160 ??

No, the Tivo software is slightly different.

Not only is the software slightly different, you can't put the correct software on it because you need at least a 250GB drive, and the S3 HD drive is only 160GB.

Better to keep that HD drive in the HD or on a shelf as a back up for the HD, then scrounge up a drive at least 250GB large and put a 648 image on it and make sure it works so that you know the only thing wrong is the original drive.

After that we'll talk about installing a 1 to 2TB drive so that you have plenty of space.

Somewhere in the "don't PM me" thread, I've got a link to a 648 image, search my user name in that thread to find it.
