It looks like my tuners are going out on my philips 704. I don't have hd and my dish is kinda old ( 1999 round dual lnb) What are the choices out there for a new dvr. Weaknees wants around 159.00 to replace both tuners

Do you want to go HD or not? If not, then there are lots of SD DTiVos on the used market - just make sure you get one that has a Receiver ID (RID) number and verify with DirecTV that the box doesn't have any pending charges against it. You can probably find HR10-250s at a good price and they'll give you component and HDMI video output for the SD channels (they won't pick up the HD channels anymore.)

Or you can go HD and get a THR22 (the new HD DTiVo), but you'll need to swap out the dish. DirecTV may do that for free as a package.

The THR22 is a fine DVR - it has the classic TiVo UI, though it is based on the DirecTV HR22 hardware. As for DirecTV's DVRs, I have one of those too (an HR21) and don't consider it junk. It has more features than the TiVo-based models but the UI is different and does not feel as elegant, though visually it is nicer. The HR10 is a TiVo inside and out, and again has the classic TiVo UI.
