No. There are certainly those in that world who assume it was the rapture, but that's more confirmation bias than anything else.

We don't know what it was, and neither do they.

And even given American Fundamentalist rapture theology, this doesn't fit...Pastor Who has shown than many of the people who vanished were not good people (some of them were downright evil), and all the small children should have been taken.

...and presumably no hindus/jews/muslims/atheists/etc should have been taken at all.

"Pastor Who".... lol. It took me a few seconds to get that. :D

Ok, so this wasn't the rapture and I read the writers don't plan on exploring what caused it?! This show is horrible

It's horrible now, but not when you thought it was about The Rapture(tm)?

It was horrible for different reasons, now its just a show about miserable people doing miserable things with no end in sight. No goal to look forward to here

Yep, that's how I see it. Just a bunch of unlikable people with semi-interesting backgrounds brooding around town. There's no real forward story or plot, only a premise. There have been a couple of interesting episodes that have kept me around, but otherwise, it's not great.

While I agree with the general thrust of what Rob is saying in this thread, I will point out that the fact that a person does bad deeds is not technically an indication of whether or not they would be taken in The Rapture. According to my not-quite-but-almost Fundamental Christian upbringing, what determines your ... uh ... fitness for The Rapture is whether or not you have accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, not how many (or few) good deeds you have done in your life.

The general idea, of course, is that IF you accept Him, you will choose to do good deeds and strive to be an all-around swell person. But it is not a requirement. You cannot get into Heaven simply by being good; if you have not accepted Christ, you're out. Conversely, if you have accepted Christ, your bad deeds (short of the Mortal Sins) will not disqualify you from entering the Pearly Gates.

    YMMV

    Go in peace.

I guess it depends on who you ask.

    We're human. We sin.

I guess I'm looking at it from the point of view of the woman who lost her husband and 2 kids. I don't know where they are, but I'm going with the idea that they are in a better place, or at least not a worse place. If I can't believe that, I'm going to go crazier than she is.

Also, this isn't assumed. When they reveal what question 121 is the relative answered 120 "yes".

Busyba, you're right about the questions being about the missing

    What?

Everybody always answer both questions the same?

I thought it was just 121, and just for Nora...

I believe the show's creator has explicitly said that they do not intend to ever explain what caused the departure. The show is more about the 98% of the leftover people still on earth and how they react to the aftermath of this strange event.

Of course, not every character in the show itself or people in the audience watching it are going to view the departure through the filter of Christian mythology or as a rapture event.

Another potential explanation might be that these people were "beamed" off the planet to another place by an alien intelligence to serve as food, slave labor or for zoo exhibits.

There's also the idea- explored previously in movies like The Matrix or The Thirteenth Floor- that the world we know and the people in it are not real per se but are instead projections of a very advanced computer simulation. The disappearance of 2% of the world's population might be as simple as a glitch in the program. This is actually my favorite theory.

I believe he's referring to the scene where we finally find out what question 121 is. In that scene, the person being questioned answered yes to 120.

But his argument is that everybody would answer 121 yes, and then he uses 120 somehow as evidence for that.

Then again, not much of anything he says makes much sense to me, so I should probably just give up trying to understand.

Right so if they are a religious person and believe they've been raptured how could they not be in a better place?
