Suggestions getting weird?

I think I'm one of the few that has suggestion recordings turned off. I barely have enough time to watch the shows that I record on purpose.

I don't EVEN want my Tivo recording anything unless I have made that choice, so I turned off the whole suggestions thing very early on.

But, whenever I see the subject I think of the episode of 'King of Queens' with Spence - "My Tivo thinks I'm gay!". HA!

I can only imagine what my Tivo thinks of me because on one of them a very large percentage of recordings are from the ID channel. Perhaps my Tivo thinks I'm a serial killer or something. :D

I think that likely is part of the explanation: if I have a 10% issue with OTA programming, that issue likely will be multiplied many times over for cable folks. (My only qualification being that I'm in a large urban area which has had a great increase in OTA channels/sub-channels, and so I'm not limited to just a dozen, lol.)

I understand the issue with the Rovi error-prone data, but wonder what's up with foreign-language shows/infomercials/music channels. I can't imagine it likely that the TiVo suggestion algorithm changed with Rovi--is it that the Rovi data for those types of shows somehow fit into the TiVo algorithm so as to lead to positive suggestion, meaning that the algorithm could be tweaked to exclude that unintended consequence?

Or, perhaps, Rovi owns an interest in the informercials, et al. or otherwise is getting kickbacks from them, and so wants to steer TiVo users to them . . . . ;)

I honestly think it's just another byproduct of the really really bad Rovi data. Who knows what's in the metadata that the different software features use. So, it's just more bad crap upon bad crap.

I used to find interesting things in Suggestions every once in a while. The only reason I haven't disabled suggestions is just out of curiosity to see how things progress.

Ah, so informercials, for example, could be poorly categorized so that the Suggestions algorithm picks them up. Like a cooking pan informercial being characterized as a "cooking show," so getting suggested as a cooking show for someone who watches cooking shows.

A "hidden benefit" I've found in Suggestions: it sometimes will record shows I've forgotten to set to record, or thought I didn't need to record. I'm forever underestimating time for Sunday errands and often find I get home after Sunday's "60 Minutes" has started--so nice to see that Suggestions has recorded it for me regardless.

I'm not a Suggestions user, so may I ask if unchecked channels are included in those selected? I just never heard of an English channel that had foreign language programs.

Count me in as someone who has had suggestions go nuts recently.
I have one machine that's been in service for several years, usually has good items in suggestions, but the past month I have found the suggestions filled with jewelry, shopping, and Spanish language shows for no obvious reason since I have never asked it to record any of those or given them thumbs up, I've finally started giving them all 3 thumbs down, but holy crap it was crazy.

Today my Roamio recorded 4 hours of tennis as a suggestion. I've never watched or recorded any tennis before.

I gave it three thumbs down, but I never had to in the past.

And so, either TiVo suddenly changed its Suggestions algorithm, or Rovi suddenly screwed up how it is marking certain categories of shows which Suggestions then picks up on.

Wasn't it the recent Amazon data glitch (if not, a similar such event) that was caused by a simple typo?

I've always had suggestions turned off, including on a Bolt I just got. A couple nights ago I was still up at about 2 finishing up some of the basketball tournament and I was really surprised to see a prompt pop up about using "the other tuner" to record a suggestion or to "cancel the recording". Makes me wonder what the TiVo is up to that I DON'T know about even with suggestions turned off.

This was probably the 'Teleworld Paid Programming' which is how TiVo downloads the videos that play in Showcases and the gold star ads.

I wasn't even aware that Showcases still existed. Found it on my Roamio under Apps & Games (?!), and it was entirely unpopulated--just the frame was there, with empty boxes. Perhaps it needs time to get filled (although I gave it a minute; but I never had gone to it before).

Speaking of Games. They no longer are after Apps on my Mini. But Showcases has been empty for a while. Collections still seems to be alive.
