After about a year and a half of working beautifully--and quietly--suddenly my Series 2 is making a constant loud whirring sound. If i unplug and re-start, things seem ok for a little while (hours) and then the noise begins again. Any ideas about how to fix would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks.

Replace Hard Drive for the whirring sound you hear is more than likely a dyeing hard disk.

Could be the cooling fan as well.

When you hear the whirring sound, go to the system info screen, and make note of the internal temperature.
Watch TV for a while, then check the temperature again and make note of how much it increased.

If it is a large increase, there's your problem.

If not, then you can start looking at the hard drive.

The same thing happerned to me about 4:05 am last night. How do I know? It was the Tivo in the bedroom.

I rebooted the machine, but that did not fix the problem.

So I unplugged the machine. I will plug it back in and let it run for a while and see if the temperature increases.

I had a similar thing and it was the case fan. You can just open it up and unplug the fan to see if the sound stops. If it doesn't, then it's probably the hard drive.

I replaced the fan from a spare Tivo. That fixed the problem.

Also, there was a ton of dust that I vacuumed out.
