But the cable co is responsible for providing proper signals, provisioning and authorization for our accounts and hundreds (thousands even?) of posts on this forum show they frequently don't do this. I also know this from my personal experience with TWC. Far more tivo problems are caused by cable co errors than by tivo hardware issues or user errors. In a perfect world that is correct. In the real world, as evidenced on these forums, things aren't always so peachy keen.
