I recorded 2 shows on the series 2 (single tuner, standard def video), same station.
After transfer to my Mac, via iTivo, one shows as 640x368, the other, 640x480. The 640x368 show looks better when viewed on the Mac, and the full screen is visible. When viewed on a TV, it looks clipped on the sides.

Pardon my ignorance, I thought SD broadcasts were all the same. What am I missing?

I suspect that your Series 2 question is actually an Apple question, and that the TiVo didn't do anything differently on one recording from the other or any differently from what it's been doing all along.

What threw me off is that the TiVo playing on a TV shows clipped sides, yet the Mac/iPad etc shows "more."

To phrase it differently, "why is my TiVo clipping the sides of a show when I know it's recorded the full image?"

    Not a major issue.

For which ratio is the TiVo set?

I think even the S2 will do 2 different ones.

I don't know beans about iTivo but the resolution on a Series 2 varies by recording quality, and some of them use a non-square pixel aspect ratio. Best uses 544x480, High uses 480x480, etc.

Whatever transcoder is converting them for the Mac may be assuming a 1:1 PAR.

I checked. Yes, there's the option 4/3 or 16/9 and the TiVo is set at the wide 16/9. That would have been a good d'oh solution, as I didn't think to check that.
