I had a screen that said all that stuff, then it went off, and i am just waiting. The front of the unit says ready set Tivo, but no response from the remote or anything. I guess i just need to be patient. LIke i tell my son "Patience Grasshopper" I never got this far before BTW. I did not expand the drive, and i disabled the timer setting on HD. Seems different for sure. Thanks for all your help. Maybe i can return the favor someday.....if it works.

What I know about Apple computers these days is pretty much limited to what I hear around hear about how people looking to upgrade or fix a problem can't do what people with desktop PCs can, so I'm not an expert on all the different models.

    So close,...
Guess which one doesn't need to run MAC? At least I've never missed it.

And that single mouse button is like wearing mittens. I'm a glove man.

My caps are bulging, slightly. Never able to get back working again after clear and delete. There is a cluster of 3 near the heat sink, and 2 are slightly bulged on top. Soldering is easy for me, just need to get the right parts. :(
    Hope that fixes things.

It might be easier to buy a cheap unsubscribed S3 online, verify that it works and then swap out first the hard drives and then the power supplies with your Tivo.

This way you can start with a known functioning Tivo and then simultaneously make incremental changes to reproduce the issue on the new Tivo and resolve the issue on your old Tivo.

Digi-Key is where I get mine. Good prices even for tiny orders; use USPS first class for shipping.

Just don't add any lithium batteries or heatshrink tubing to your order. I ordered my Tivo capacitors along with a 4' length heatshrink tubing and it came in a 4' long box despite the order notes saying it was OK to fold or bend the tubing. They adjusted the shipping cost upwards significantly (I had selected first class mail).

In this case the right parts are the same uF number, the same voltage or slightly higher, Low ESR (make sure it says that specifically) and a 105 Degree C rating.

If you're anywhere near Raleigh, I can refer you to a guy up there that can supply them.

I don't remember the exact sequence of what happens on a C&DE, but if it results in a reboot, keep in mind, some operations only output on the analog svideo/composite video lines until the system is further along in the boot sequence, at which point HDMI becomes active.

I know this and I still sometimes get tricked into thinking something is messed up because I forget I'm looking at the HDMI output.

Just getting back to dealing with things, and found the list of caps someone had put together. Placed my order, and will see how it goes when i get the parts. Thanks everyone for your help.

Well, changed all the caps, and it fired up, but it's worse now than it was before. All of the lights on the front of the unit came on, then they went off after a minute or so. No display on the TV either, no welcome screen or anything. I uesd a list of capacitors found on the forum, and ordered from Mouser. At least before i knew the HD was an issue, and pretty sure the PS was as well, when researching the bad capacitors. Hate to buy a new power supply without confirming that's the issue. I have not found an S3 for sale locally on Craigslist either. :confused:Only reason I'm trying so hard is this has lifetime subscription, and I'm determined.

for kicks, i left it plugged in, as the fan was working and no smoke was coming out of it, as i was wondering if maybe it was trying to do the clear and delete that we had gotten too before i replaced the caps. Front now says ready set Tivo, so I'm going to wait and see what happens, unless you guys have other recommendations

How do you have this connected to the TV?

    Yeah, what he said.

Depending on how/when you connect the HDMI port, you might not see any output until it is done booting.

On svideo/composite you'll always see the boot screens so if you are diagnosing issues, use those connections.

Threw a regular video connection on it, and am stuck at almost there just a few minutes more for quite some time now. About 6 hours.

Is it stuck there or is it in a loop where it resets and continuously gets hung on that screen before resetting again?

Can you use your current drive or a spare drive and put a new image on?

I think its stuck, but can't confirm, as i didn't sit and watch it for 6 hours straight. Reason being as that i never saw a change as best i could tell. I did have another HD which i just popped in. Seems to be stuck on Welcome screen with that one.

Almost there just a few minutes is pretty far along in the boot cycle. Surprising the drive you just through in couldn't get as far.

It is probably stuck, but instead of sitting there watching it, I sometimes just turn on a handycam and record a few hours then fast forward.
