There's a weekly show I record that provides no description. (John McLaughlin's one on one, an interview show).

Is there any way to edit the data of a transferred show, using the TiVo Transfer app or other, which would let me add something that would appear when I transfer the show back? All I'd like is to add the guest name to the show description or title. Even if it only appears on my computer, but visible before transfer to TiVo, that would be great.

I've edited the names of .tivo files (Charlie Rose) copied onto the computer via TiVo Desktop (although somehow Desktop can create filenames that use characters that Windows won't let me use in a filename), but the change doesn't seem to happen back at the TiVos. For that I'm guessing I'd need to hex edit the meta-data in the file itself if that's possible.

You will have to strip the encryption and convert the .TiVo files to straight MPEG with kmttg or tivodecode. That will also remove the encrypted metadata.

At that point you can just rename them to add the guest or title. Without metadata Desktop and your TiVo will just use the filename.

You can also install pyTivo and create your own metadata files. That's a little more complicated but you can control every detail of the metadata and even maintain grouping of shows.

Unitron, right, you see the same issue I do.
Ggieseke - thanks, I'll try pyTivo, sounds like it will do what I want.

It surely will. In addition, kmttg will download the metafile from the TiVo at the same time you download the video file, automatically naming it to <videoname>.txt for later use by pyTivo or other programs. The amount of metadata that actually gets transferred back to the TiVo by pyTivo is somewhat limited (by the TiVo, not the pyTivo program), but the description is one field that definitely does transfer. If you run vidmgr, it can display the entire contents of the metafile (or whatever parts you specify) before transfer, but it will not change what actually gets transferred to the TiVo:
