Forgive my ignorance if this is common sense but can i somehow hook up a tivo premiere to a regular hd cable box without using a tuning adapter and cable card? I cannot get the tuning adapter/cable card combo to work with charter (see my other thread).

    Simple answer, NO

Many reasons like the premiere has no IR blaster output to control your cable box, and no means of setting up the premiere to take the output of your cable box, for what you want to do, a used Series 2 will do the job and cost you less than $100 with Lifetime. (There is no consumer electronics that can take a HDMI or component input to record in HD)

The Premiere *IS* a cable box.

The OP is having so many problems with using his TP as a cable box on his cable system I think he is just looking to see if another option exists.

It took just over 7 months to get my first one working / stable, TA replaced twice, new run from their box on the ground. The second one I added 2 months later the TA in the self install kit was DOA, the TA on the tech's truck that came to service the DOA TA was also DOA. They brought out two more that day or they were getting cut I was dropping everything. Another was DOA the last one worked.

Motorola TA's have a high failure oft DOA rate. I oft contemplated going OTA only. I've now had about 8 months of relatively stable cable service. Getting here has been infuriating at times. I held out adding internet via cable using alternative and let them know this needed to work before I'd switch that over.

I'm now beginning my second month with internet service with TWC bought my own modem also! So far only a bump in getting it activated because the first person I talked to made a mistake authorizing my modem. I credit the smooth operation because I took the time and made them make it right.

When threatening to cut the cord I always refereed to the Discount Tire commercial, lol. It got their attention!
