Why would you want to use a WD Red drive? It's not an A/V drive it's a NAS drive.

Not designed for use in DVR.

While some drives may be "designed" for use in a DVR, at least based upon everything others have said in the past, ANY drive is fast enough for Tivo use.. (I haven't done the math, but maybe it's different now, with 6 tuners recording + streaming + downloading..)

Maybe the "NAS" drives have a longer warranty?

Also, from what I remember about previous drives, "DVR" drives really just have extra capabilities in the command set that AFAIK Tivos don't even use anyway.

They do have a better warranty. Some of the posters in the "hard Drive" thread seem to prefer the red drives over the green or av drives.

A red drive would not be the best choice for a tivo and it has nothing to do with speed. The red drives are made for people running hardware raid controllers that handle error correction. TLER is configurable so it doesn't kick into error recovery and drop from the array. This is not needed in non hardware raid situations. Your drive could have block errors and your entire drive can become corrupt if not set properly. The old green drives you could adjust TLER but WD locked out that ability a while back. People wanted a cheaper alternative then the enterprise class drives so the launch of the Red drives solved that.
