I cut cable a few months ago and I am pretty happy with that choice. However my wife is still not satisfied and wants it back. I am considering doing this as a big xmas present this year.

My question is external streaming to the TiVo. I have ripped my DVD/Br collection to mkv and would want one or more TiVos to be able to index and read off an external source and stream the content. Is this a possibility yet?

Have you looked into pytivo (1.)? If your source files that you've ripped to can be read by ffmpeg, pytivo will let you watch them on the TiVo. I've done lots of this and it works nicely. There's some other apps that you can throw into the mix like metagenerator (2.) to build text files that go along with your video files so when you look at the media source from the TiVo you'll see metadata displayed almost as if it's a recording saved on the TiVo. Not 100% like the TiVo, but pretty damned close.
