is the tivo firmware stored on the hard drive?

If I change my hard drive from a different premiere... will the firmware / software for the TiVo be the old one or will it be the new 20.0 software?

The software* is stored on the hard drive, yes. As for the version -- it will automatically be upgraded the next time the TiVo contacts tivo.com.

    * Definitionally, it's not "firmware" unless it's in a ROM. :) The TiVo does have a boot ROM, of course, similar to a BIOS. It checks the kernel to make sure it was signed by TiVo, and starts it, but that's about all.

Also I assume Premieres have the same limitations on moving hard drives as the older TiVos.

If you put the drive from another Premiere is you'll have to do a 'Clear & Delete Everything' before it'll work. (So you can't save any shows that might have been recorded on the previous TiVo.)

But aside from that if you move a drive from an identical model it should work fine. And since the subscription is tied to the motherboard, not the hard drive or software, it won't affect the status of your Tivo. (For example it won't break a lifetime subscription)
