The last week I've been watching marathon sessions of Malcolm In The Middle, from the beginning. I just finished Season 4 Episode 10 right now and am about to move to episode 11.

I miss this show so much. I haven't seen a single bad episode yet.

I can't believe US releases of the show on disc, other than season 1, are still held up, allegedly, by excessive music licensing costs. There's so little music actually in the episodes. It's at least good to see the folks in the UK are finally getting a chance to see it though.

I'm not actually going to buy them, but are you sure the UK ones don't have the music replaced?

I love the show, too. I saw a tweet that said that when Breaking Bad wraps up, Walt will go into witness protection and get a new identity, and the last episode of Breaking Bad will be the first episode of Malcolm in the Middle.

I used to enjoy it. Then I moved in with d-dub and his boys.

It might just seem like a documentary now.

Obviously the fault of those well-known money-grubbers They Might Be Giants.

(I only say that because they've grubbed more money out of me than any other band.)

It would be nice to know more details just to understand the situation better, but I suspect it's an issue of how licensing of music for specific categories of usage is handled via copyright law; my guess is it's easier to clear rights in the UK for music usage in television shows sold on disc, perhaps because of some general way licensing is handled under copyright law there whereas in the US it might be more subject to each licensing party having more direct control over terms, thus much harder to come to terms because one has to negotiate with too many parties and it makes the whole deal subject to a few parties being comparatively "unreasonable" about licensing demands.

This show was a favorite of mine. I'm pretty sure I watched every episode. At one time I had them all saved via TTG.

I have seen them all multiple times as well. The show made Entertainment Weekly's Top 100 shows of all time, I think it was like 93.

I know one of the issues in the US at least with older shows, is that the studios didn't realize at the time the music license was obtained that there would be people interested in buying shows on disc. For even older shows they didn't even think about syndicated reruns.

For the older shows they probably could have tacked on license rights for those other uses, back at the beginning, for next to nothing. But coming back after the show has proven successful, and there a demonstrated sales opportunity for the syndication or discs, and it's much more expensive to aquire the license scope.

Now by the time Malcolm in the Middle came out, you'd think the standard contract would have included rights for syndication, and disc, and a catch-all rate for "other distribution channels" just to avoid getting nailed by this again [for example when digital distribution became popular several years later] - but apparently not.
Or maybe some music licensers pushed back and wanted too much extra upfront for those additional rights; and the studio just shrunk the scope rather than pay for future rights...

It's one of my favorites and I sure can understand a marathon of watching - and not being able to STOP watching.

I am in the middle of that with West Wing. I can't stop watching it. I have done a marathon of all seven seasons over the last few weeks and now will just pull one up at random to watch while having dinner or such. It's it funny how these shows affect us.

Great show. When I saw Cranston cast in Breaking Bad I figured it had to be a comedy.

I kind of knew his past and was curious when I found out it was a drama of how he would be. Well we all know the answer to that. Very rare can someone do comedy and drama that well.

It took me all of 6 minutes to get past the Hal character in Breaking Bad. He's that good.

BTW, he also played that anti-semetic dentist in Seinfeld.
