I think that's what they are hoping. That because of the pedigree we'll at least watch the pilot. While us TV geeks probably would watch because it's Bay/Thomas, I wonder how many fans of HIMYM are even aware of who they are? But they WOULD recognize the title How I Met Your Dad.

Well, Bay/Thomas did have The Goodwin Games on ABC last season but unfortunately, ABC buried it.

Wait, the "mother" actress won't be on this show?? What the hell is the point? I change my mind and am highly disappointed :( I imagined it the same universe but told from "mother's" perspective, with cameos from the original actors!

So I assume that we still don't know who the wife of Ted is. Correct?

I stopped watching a few years ago and am curious how it ends.

Yes, they introduced the Mother in the season finale last May and she's made a few appearances so far this season, but she and Ted won't officially meet until the end of the series, which will be next May.

Nope, the "spin-off" isn't really a spin-off at all, but simply a show with a similar concept and name.

We've seen how The Mother has met Lilly (present day) and Barney (in a flashback) so far, and we've also seen a couple flash forwards of Ted and The Mother together in the future, including Ted's proposal which The Mother immediately accepted. But this final season is being played out over the course of the three days leading up to Robin and Barney's wedding, and we already know from previous seasons that Ted meets The Mother on the train platform after the wedding festivities are over. So the presumption is that will be the final scene of the series, but by that time we will have seen several flash forwards of Ted and The Mother together to understand how their courtship progressed after their initial meeting.

Indie film star Greta Gerwig will star in the spinoff "How I Met Your Dad".

The actress will reportedly write for How I Met Your Dad as well as star, and also serve as a producer. Bays and Thomas are writing the script for the pilot, which will be shot in Los Angeles, but if the series in picked up by CBS, filming will reportedly take place in New York.

Interesting they are going to shoot in NY. Isn't HIMYM shot in LA?

I restarted HIMYM from the pilot the other day and I realized just how gross this whole premise is. I'm not a parent but do parents sit around and tell their teenage children about people they banged in their 20's? Somehow it's a little more gross to me that this mother is going to sit around telling her kids about all the guys she slept with. :D

Interesting that a spinoff of a very successful 9 year comedy, with the same creators, has to go through the pilot process, instead of just getting picked up to series.

If you look at it less as a spin-off and more as a completely new series built from scratch that just happens to have the same premise as a recent hit show, then it makes a bit more sense. :)

Also, let's not forget that this is CBS, which is extremely conservative with its development practices, and also that the most recent high-profile straight-to-series order at the broadcast networks, The Michael J. Fox Show, was recently pulled from the schedule because of horrible ratings. So CBS is going to continue doing what put them at the top of the heap, even in cases where it may not seem necessary.

Umm, in the scenes with the children, it's clear that he cleans up what he is telling them.. Unless you're just referring to ANY of his girlfriends as "people he banged".
