So, I got home from work yesterday and my Premier is making a lot of noise. I can hear it from inside the cabinet.

I suspected the worst case, bad hard drive and cracked the case to do some testing. I got everything setup and I was going to run some tests on the hard drive to see what might be happening - but when I plugged it into my test rig it was quiet and seemed fine.

So, back to the TiVo the drive goes and I plug the unit in with cover off and the problem was pretty clear. Fan was making a huge amount of noise and vibration.

I pulled the fan, oiled it with a little 3 in 1 oil and reinstalled it. It is running smooth now, but I suspect it is just a matter of time - and I would like to replace it with a better fan.

I remember reading some conversations about fan replacements, but I cannot find a high quality recommended unit from my TCF searches.

Anyone replace their fan and what unit did you get? Not looking for the cheapest - I already have that one. I am hoping for a good quality fan.

    Suggestions?

    Yeah...

I suppose the unit has lasted a couple of years so putting in the same fan should last the remainder of the life.

I was just hoping for a fan that can handle constent operation without tearing itself apart.

Pretty much any 50mm fan works. The one in my Premier died and I replaced it with one I got from newegg for $5. Has been working fine ever since. Although the official one is a bit thicker then the one I bought, so it probably moves a bit more air, but my temps seem fine so I'm not worried about it.

A combination of 3 in ONE (or sewing machine oil or other light oil) and a light grease/lube and it should last another several years.

Was the fan your partner, or did you forget to close the bedroom window curtains?

   ;):D
