    Hi ... I'm a complete newbie and I have a simply question.
Is it possible to enlarge the recording capacity of my DirecTV 40GB unit by connecting a USB hard drive? If it is, are there any steps I must take to do it and is there any additional equipment that I need? Also, can anyone make a recommendation on what type of hard drive to use? (all my computer equipment is Mac, but I'm assuming that I'd need to use a PC-type hard drive).

Any help would be greatly appreciated! So, thanks in advance! :D

Not with a USB harddrive, no. But it is possible to replace or supplement the internal hard drive to get more storage space.

There is an entire forum here TiVo Upgrade Center devoted to that. Also if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself it's possible to either buy ready to install drives, or even pay to have someone else upgrade you TiVo.

Go to dvrupgrade.com or weaknees.com and buy a pre-formatted Tivo hard drive. If you can work a torx wrench, just follow the instructions and you'll be all set. :)
