Father and brother could both easily be Mycroft. If he is the older brother (I think he is, but can't remember for sure), then it is common for the first son to share a name with the father.

I saw that and thought the same thing but... Are we saying Moriarty is really Sherlock's father (and he hired an assassin to kill 20+ people and a separate assassin to kill Sherlock's girl) or Moriarty is acting as his father in hiring Watson and communicating with her (in addition to killing all those people)?

With what I've seen on the show so far, I can't see the reasoning for any of that.

I think the latter is more likely than the former. But either one is a wild guess given what we have seen so far.

On a different topic, given what he did in the books, I think it is certainly in character for Moriarty to have 20+ people killed just as a distraction from his true objective of killing Sherlock's girlfriend (as a sort of game).

Same here. This is my favorite new show this season.

The show is just well done. You knew that Watson was going to stay with on Holmes and the writers could have found a lazy way to make that happen but the way they interweaved it in this episode was great!

I'd watch anyway for Johnny Lee Miller and Aidan Quinn, but I'll be really glad for this show to start to have a through line with a little mystery and misguiding, rather than every episode being like every other generic crime drama. A little more character development would go a long way.
