Difference between tivo purchased series 3 and retail

    I own a lifetime series 1. If I purchase a series 3 from retail and from the VIP site, how does Tivo know if I'm registering the retail Tivo instead of the VIP one?

    Good question. Perhaps they have a way of tracking the Service Number?

    I doubt Tivo is going to tell us.

    Perhaps they match a TSN to the vip order (which may explain why it takes 48 hours to ship) or have reserved a range of TSNs for the vip orders.

    Or maybe they're just counting on the honor system.

    If you order from the VIP site they know *exactly* what TSN you got. They probably just compare activations to the list of VIP TSNs. Simple to do.

    I'd put money on they track the TSNs sold through the VIP program.

    TiVo would send shipping order, its number tied to a VIP purchase,.
    The shipper would send the TSN of the shipped DMR back to TiVo, which they would cross reference to the shipping order and VIP order, so when you activate and trasnsfer, it will be that DVR.
