Or he can go to prison.

The series ends with a smile breaking across his face as he realizes what a target-rich environment he'll be spending the rest of his life in. :D

He's a good planner and improviser though. He could end up in Panama or Belize.

Final scene: Dexter on his boat, headed off into the sunset toward parts unknown.

I don't know about that specific suggestion, but I do like the idea of a flash forward epilogue.

For me, it was just too implausible of a turn for the show to take.

Deb finding out Dexter was a serial killer? She would have turned him in. Even if he does kill killers, it's the opposite of everything she stands for. At they very least, they wouldn't be able to continue to work together professionally. It's an insult to Deb's otherwise well-developed character for her to be in the know but not to act.

Dexter really can't function if people know what he does. Generally when that's happened in the series before, the person who knows has either been killed off (Miguel, Lila, Doakes) or departed the show never to return (Lumen, Hannah?).

A better way to freshen it up would have been to shake up the Miami Metro staff to make things a little riskier. Put some more Doakes-like personalities in the cast. Give Dexter the conflict of having to kill an innocent person in order to protect himself.

Which they did with the killing of LaGuerta in S7 finale. A good turn for the show to take, even if an unperfect implementation

As far as how it will end, there's only way it can end, and that's with Dexter being executed by the state. We've had foreshadowing of that throughout the series. Either Harrison will be there viewing and this will be the psychological motivator to prevent Harrison from turning out to be a serial killer, or it will be the motivator for Harrison being more careful.

I particularly like the final scene being a grown Harrison imagining a conversation with his deceased father: "Rule 1, Harrison, Don't get caught..."

I think the events in S6 that lad up to it make it more plausible, particularly
the fact that Deb thought she might be in love with Dexter. While I hated that plot development and thought it was completely absurd, with the benefit of hindsight, it makes sense that Deb spent the few weeks prior to that coming to the realization that Dexter is the only person in the world she's close to and the only person who loves her. When you look at the final scene through that prism, it makes sense that she didn't turn him in. And the fact that she panicked and then helped him cemented that fact, since she didn't want to lose her job over it.

I thought Deb being in love with Dexter had to be the single worst decision the producers/writers have ever made about the series. It wrecked her character. I agree with you that it makes the final scene of S6 much more plausible, but at what cost?

However, at that time I was hoping the whole 'Deb in love with Dexter' thing had been abandoned by the writers as the bad idea that it was. I have the bad feeling that it's going to continue to come up in the final season.

At this point, it would be better to simply give Deb a decent new love interest. If they really feel the need for cheap tabloid plot twists, have her go lesbian with Lumen or Hannah or Angel's Daughter or Quinn's stripper ex-girlfriend. Even that would be more palatable than her being in love with Dexter and be less damaging to her character.

Ha! Love it. I still miss SFU. Hope Michael C Hall finds another great TV project. I know he is also a stage actor, though.

I kind of like this one. It leaves the the ending up to the viewer and allows for more stories in the future.

    I know the series is a different animal from the books, but in the books;

Deb knows early on about Dexter's double life. While she has problems with it, she does not let it get in the way of their relationship.

Thanks! I should probably point out, though, that given that the series is set in Miami, if he's in the open water and headed West into the sunset, he's going to land himself right back at Miami Metro. :)

Maybe he spent the day going south, and now at sunset he is headed towards Corpus Christi (heheh, Corpus ;) )

Just plowed through s5-s7 last month. Look forward to seeing it wind up.

With everyone that knows what they know it just can't last any longer.
